I know after next year Ray's contract will be up and who knows maybe they will give him a one year deal or whatever, but hypothetically if he is not coming back we are slated to have around 40million on the books for salaries...will we have enough money to make a run at a Lebron or a Wade?? Now I know the chances of them signing here are slim to none...the only reason why I ask this is because if Garnett is chirping in their ears about playing in Boston and possibly winning a championship with them, maybe they will have a slight bit of interest of signing here...Regardless of the chances of us signing one of them (and there probably is a 99% chance they will not come here) do we have enough money to go after one of them?

Yeah that was a great post. That link probably just knocked Roy's TP count up to another milestone, too.

If RA signs with someone else though - wouldn't that open up the 16 million in cap space?

There is a soft salary cap in the NBA.  We're significantly over it.  Even if we let Ray Allen walk, we'd still be over the salary cap, because we're paying guys like Pierce and KG like 40 mil and still have a whole team to field.

I got a question though... when will Oden and Durant be unrestricted free agents?

Assuming they play for their qualifying offers, they'll be unrestricted in the summer prior to the 2012-13 season.

if we do re-sign Ray Allen, how much are we going to have to pay him? is it going to be more than what he makes? or less?
if more, how much more and if less, how much less?
i'm wondering because we still have to sign Rondo and Powe, I doubt we'll have that much money to really go after another star player..

It definitely won't be more.  In terms of how much less he'd take, it's hard to say.  The MLE?  Probably no less than that, but it's impossible to predict where Ray's heart is at.

We still have KG, PP, Rondo and Perk at that point.  I don't think a big splash FA is needed but hopefully we can get better quality bench FAs if we win again.

I'm not sure of the rules for resigning Ray, but I think we could sign some solid FAs and resign Ray after that as some sort of FA retention option.

If the current youth can develop over the next 2 years into solid players, a big time FA isn't automatically necessary in 2010.  We would certainly need to do something a couple of years after that (maybe move expiring deals).

maybe we'll have cap room in 2012 when KG comes off the books... until then... no top free agents are possible :)

We don't need to sign anyone really.

All we need is to draft a stud that no one knows about or drops like an anvil out of a chopper.
