Was watching Gerald ballin' last night in pre-season game. He looked really good, actually. 16 points in 16 minutes, 5 rebounds, 1 block, zero turnovers. 3/6 from 3.
I remember where I was the night he was drafted like it was yesterday. Mixture of disappointment (really was hoping we'd snag Danny Granger, whom the Pacers drafted one slot ahead) and excitement (who is this talented HS kid with the missing finger)?
Gerald was maddening to watch. He'd make some great other worldly plays and dunks (remember that finish at Toronto?), followed by bone headed missed assignments. But man, he sure was fun to watch and root for.
Of course, it was all Doc's fault for not playing him more!!
By the time the KG trade went down, Gerald was basically a throw in on that trade.
He bounced around, including a stint in Russia as I remember.
But gradually through perseverance, hard work and skill and talent, made it back into the NBA.
Was even a spot starter for us back in 2017. (Who will forget how his insertion into the starting lineup changed the 2017 Bulls series??)
If someone told you in 2007 when we traded Gerald Green that his NBA career would continue through the 2020-21 season, that he would be among only 3 guys from the 2005 draft class (along with Chris Paul and Lou Williams) to still be playing in the NBA, I'd have called you nuts.
It was all your fault, Doc!!!
Congrats, Gerald Green!!
