Can someone explain why Grant Williams, Javonte Green, Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters, and Tacko Fall are taking up a roster spot on this team? All of these guys have very limited upside and It doesn’t seem like any of them will ever be legitimate NBA players.
I understand having 1 or 2 “project” players on the roster, but 5? There were plenty of veteran players available who signed minimal contracts with other teams that would have actually been able to contribute to the Celtics as bench players.
Tyler Johnson($2m) and Jeff Green($2.5m) signed with the Brooklyn
Josh Jackson ($5m/year) and Wayne Ellington ($2.5m) signed with Detroit
Kent Bazemore($2.3M) signed with Golden state
Sterling Brown($1.6M) signed with Houston
Bobby Portis($3.6M) and Bryn Forbes($2.3M) signed with Milwaukee
Willy Hernangomez($1.8M) signed with New Orleans.
Nerlens Noel ($5M) and Austin Rivers($3.5M) signed with New York.
Dwight Howard($2.5m) signed with Philadelphia
E’Twaun Moore($2.3M) and Frank Kaminsky($1.7M signed with Phoenix
Harry Giles(1.6M) and Enes Kanter($5M) signed with Portland
Hassan Whiteside($2.3M) signed with Sacramento
Alex Len($2.2M) signed with Toronto.
Any of the above would have been an upgrade over G-Williams, Edwards, Green, Waters, and Tacko. I don’t see the point of keeping these players on the roster when there are other guys out there signing elsewhere for minimal contracts that can actually play in the NBA.
