Title: Guilty Pleasure Movies
Post by: slamtheking on September 09, 2014, 03:50:31 PM
No, this is not a topic about p0rn.

Thought I'd throw this out there as a discussion topic while we wait for the next season to get here.

What movies do you feel a guilty pleasure in enjoying?  Movies that you know are pretty bad or just way outside what people would expect you to like but you don't care what critics/friends/family say.  Movies that you'll watch over and over again whenever they come on TV (or that you pop into a DVD player).

For me, I think mine would be
- Happy Gilmore
- The Waterboy
- Hollywood Nights (with a young Tony Danza, Michele Pfeiffer and Robert Wuhl)
- Used Cars (Kurt Russell in prime form)

there are others I really go to over and over again but none of them get the wife's eyeroll like these do.

How about anyone else?

Zoolander and Uncle Buck both get 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, not sure if that qualifies.  There are also the mid 2000s trio of Grandma's Boy, Hamlet 2 and Hot Rod that are all really solid if not particularly intelligent

Party Monster (Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green)
You Got Served
Rad

The last being my favorite movie of all time. For people who know the movie (like, really know), they totally understand - otherwise I just come off crazy.

For some reason I've always had a soft spot for that ridiculous Fast + Furious knockoff, Torque.

And I love Mystery Science Theater 3000, but that doesn't really count.  I guess old Godzilla movies?

Pretty much anything made between 1980 and 1989.

Watched Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure last night on NetFlix as a matter of fact.  (Way better than the Monday night games)

TP to the OP for this topic.  I had fun thinking about it my whole ride home from work.  I couldn't land on one leader but there are a few movies I'd put on this list.

Obscure/Not highly regarded movies

Fear of a Black Hat - a mockumentary about an up and coming rap group NWH ("Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.s With Hats").  I probably have watched this movie about 30 times.  A group of about 6 - 8 of my friends love it, and quotes from it still get thrown around at parties,  fantasy football drafts, etc.  Anyone else around has no idea what we are talking about.

The Great White Hype - not very highly regarded in it's day, this movie has always cracked me up and I think it is one of Samuel L. Jackson's best roles.

Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human - movie features Carmen Electra and some random nobody guy actor progressing throw a relationship from dating to pregnancy, but the story is told from the perspective of an alien National Geographic Show.

Movies a lot of people probably wouldn't think I'd love watching over and over

Lost in Translation - I absolutely love this movie, and can pretty much pick it up at any point in the story and keep watching it.  ScarJo was young and super hot, and there is something about the story that just resonates with me.  I also think the ending is perfect.  (spoiler alert) A few of my female friends have vehemently disagreed with me on this, but I like not knowing what they said to each other.  I love that it is left to the imagination.  I was just happy that in the end the elephant in the room was acknowledged, and they had the "moment" they both wanted instead of it ending with a great "what-if".

The Princess Bride - just a fun movie to watch, even years after my childhood when I first saw it.  A light, entertaining chick flick that this guy can watch over and over again.

Back to the future trilogy
Star Wars (the entire saga)

That movie is Fever Pitch.

I laughed so hard at Freddy Got Fingered at all the most shameful and inappropriate cheap laughs, and I don't care who knows.

Not sure if it's a guilty pleasure but whenever Mean Girls is on I watch it from wherever I pick it up until the end.

I thought The Girl Next Door was a piece of garbage, but basically any scene in that movie with Eliza Cuthbert has an unfair hold over me.

People slam Deja Vu for it's inconsistencies and the overall ridiculousness of the "science" involved, but I guess I'm a sucker for most any Denzel movie. I've got the DVD.

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion is a surprisingly solid comedy.

I also used to love Pump up the Volume, but you may have to be a disaffected high school student the first couple times you see it.

...oh yeah, and Dirty Work with Norm MacDonald.  It's a crappy movie wrapped around a couple dozen comedic gems.

Kung Pow is the ultimate "Love it or hate it" movie.  I think it is fantastic, but I have friends that had to shut it off before it was finished.

Two other comedies that got horrendous reviews that I think are really funny are Deuce Bigalow and Deuce Bigalow 2.

-----------

I like junky movies so nothing is jumping to mind that hasn't been said. Maybe:

- Can't Buy Me Love
- anything with Elisabeth Shue

I also watched Poison Ivy (not THAT one the, the TV movie with Michael J Fox and Nancy McKeon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089820/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_27) about a summer camp) like every day for a couple years after school.

I'm scratching my head at what some of you consider guilty pleasures, but whatever. Though I'm scratching my head at some I'll be listing since I think they're awesome.

Here are some of mine:

Teen Wolf Too
Ski School 1 and 2
If Looks Could Kill
Gymkata
Howard the Duck
The Secret of My Succe$s
Beverly Hills Ninja
Airborne
A Low Down Dirty Shame
Commando
Cobra
Spaceballs
Bye Bye Love
Coming to America
ˇThree Amigos!
Big Trouble in Little China
Kindergarten Cop
Weekend at Bernie's 1 and 2
Encino Man
Son in Law
Waterworld
Drop Dead Fred (May he RIP)
Over the Top
Masters of the Universe
Black Sheep
Toy Soldiers
House II
The Beastmaster
Mannequin: On the Move
Darkman
The Last Dragon
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin
18 Again!
Next of Kin
Out to Sea

Going to stop there, have too many and can go on for the rest of the day, plus I don't consider many of these guilty at all, but I guess they fit once one gets down to it.

What I was going for in terms of 'guilty pleasures' when I created the topic were movies you know are pretty bad or that no one likes but you watch them all the same.

based on this list, a lot of these films qualify.   8)

Here are some of mine:

Teen Wolf Too
Ski School 1 and 2
If Looks Could Kill
Gymkata
Howard the Duck
The Secret of My Succe$s
Beverly Hills Ninja
Airborne
A Low Down Dirty Shame
Commando
Cobra
Spaceballs
Bye Bye Love
Coming to America
ˇThree Amigos!
Big Trouble in Little China
Kindergarten Cop
Weekend at Bernie's 1 and 2
Encino Man
Son in Law
Waterworld
Drop Dead Fred (May he RIP)
Over the Top
Masters of the Universe
Black Sheep
Toy Soldiers
House II
The Beastmaster
Mannequin: On the Move
Darkman
The Last Dragon
Tim Burton's Batman series of movies
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin

18 Again!
Next of Kin
Out to Sea

Going to stop there, have too many and can go on for the rest of the day, plus I don't consider many of these guilty at all, but I guess they fit once one gets down to it.

What I was going for in terms of 'guilty pleasures' when I created the topic were movies you know are pretty bad or that no one likes but you watch them all the same.

based on this list, a lot of these films qualify.   8)

Yes. And Yes.

I know many/most do :)

But then I go through other mentions, like Star Wars, The Incredibles, The Princess Bride, Back to the Future, Home Alone, Superbad, Naked Gun, Rudy, Rocky II, Bloodsport, Ace Ventura... and I just have to scratch my head to some degree. Or maybe there's a lack of awareness of how many people actually think these movies are a very good watch.

Though I guess one can argue that the perception of geekness in some of these, despite being good, makes it a guilty pleasure in that regard.

hadn't thought of it that way but that does make sense.  there's number of previous mentions I don't consider bad movies.  of course, they also match up to a lot of movies I like

Zoolander and Uncle Buck both get 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, not sure if that qualifies.  There are also the mid 2000s trio of Grandma's Boy, Hamlet 2 and Hot Rod that are all really solid if not particularly intelligent

Rt scores are so dumb in my opinion.

This is a tough one to admit.... but I find 50 First Dates to be weirdly charming and re-watchable.

I feel a lot better getting that off my chest, thanks OP.

that's definitely my wife's go-to movie along with My Best Friend's Wedding and Love Actually

must admit I think them as well.  Love Actually was pretty underrated IMHO

I'm not into romcoms but thought Love Actually was ok until the walking dead guy betrayed his best friend.

Roadhouse
The best of the best
Starship troopers ( intentionally campy though)
Catwoman is seriously the funniest worst movie I've ever seen. Every single scene is so stupid that it's funny. I could watch the basketball scene on repeat its just so bad.

Most unintentional comedy of roadhouse is the old man looking out the window at a shirtless Swayze doing tai chi and he shakes his head and wipes his brow like " he's so amazing!" ❤️❤️❤️

Just Friends. The shallowest movie I've ever seen, but I love it. It is so freaking stupid but it knows it is so freaking stupid because the humor itself is pretty harmless throughout the movie. I also love it because let's face it, who here hasn't been friend zoned by that girl they were crazy about back in high school? Granted, the whole movie was extremely unrealistic because the lesson is if you were that fat and/or unpopular kid in high school that got friend zoned by the hottest girl in school, just turn into Ryan Reynolds and (Spoiler Warning) she'll change her mind! However seeing the guy end up with the girl he loved in high school is admittingly kind of heartwarming.

Another reason why I love it is because Ryan Reynolds character is likable and witty which made him look more and more like the perfect choice for Deadpool.

Likable cast, has some good laughs and a VERY relatable premise but very shallow and unrealistic, but man I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy watching it again and again.

Is that the one with Gary Busey where they hunt Ice T's homeless character? If so, yes, that was an excellent movie.

This one came up in the "favorite movies of all time" thread.  Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in POINT BREAK.  A simply awful movie with a terrible script and mediocre acting.  Love it!

The most unintentional comedy for me is when the bad karate guy (can't remember name, who cares) is fighting Swayze and says "I used to BLEEP guys like you in prison!"

It's like the equivalent of Happy Gilmore's "I eat pieces of 'poop' like you for breakfast." "You eat pieces of 'poop' for breakfast?" exchange.

Over the Top.
I have a friend who when you ask him what he's doing this weekend ,he uses plot summaries from bad 80's movies like, " I'm entering an arm wrestling competition in Reno. If I win I get a monster truck, and can win custody of my son back." Cracks me up.

Added Alatriste (2006) to my list: valiant soldiers fighting for religion and women in early 17th cent Spain. Catholics should enjoy it, as it includes a number of insults against protestant heretics. Not recommended to Protestants, esp. if Dutch unless they want to laugh with the historical inaccuracies.

There is a subtitled version on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX-y87nmZnc

And it had enough success in Spain to revive interest in the period, this painting for example was inspired from the depiction of the Battle of Rocroi in the movie.

I feel no guilt about this but the movie that comes to mind first is The Rundown.

The Rock is great in it (he doesn't use guns because they make him too badass!), Christopher Walken is hilarious, peak Rosario Dawson, Sean William Scott doing his thing (for whatever that's worth to you), and it's before Pete Berg started relying too much on the shakey-cam, coke-editing he likes so much now. So much fun but I feel like I'm the only one.
