Its funny, i read all these posts with everyone saying that we have no all-star on this team but i would beg to differ. Brad Stevens is a star, he may not have superstar pull yet but the guy is making a name for himself and is certainly the difference maker on this team. We are in a great spot going forward because he will put us in positions to win and get the best out of the players he has. Just like every other great coach in history.

Great coaches still need great talent to win, though, don't they?

I've felt for a long time that he's is a Godsend to this team.

I absolutely agree with that but i think that its a bit jaded to say that we don't have really good talent with an opportunity to get more much sooner. What I'm saying is that we already have one star, but I also believe that in order to get back to a championship you need another.

Mostly, I'm disagreeing with the assertion that we don't already have a star. Im sorry if that was not clear in my original post.

This.

A star coach with mediocre players doesn't get you much further than a bottom seed in the playoffs.

While I love what I have seen so far out of the coach, I am not ready to pull out the anointing oil just yet.  It is more impressive to me for a coach to take a top five team to the top (and win it all) than it is to take bottom feeder to playoffs in the sorry east.  For now, he is playing with house money.  Hopefully he can continue to perform when the stakes get real.

Reading the Subject line of this post was shocking.  I expected the OP to state that Isaiah is a star.

We are worse off than I thought if our "star" is the coach.

Nobody begrudges CBS the accolades he has earned this season. I am worried that people reach the conclusion though that because he has achieved so much with this much maligned group, that he could do it with absolutely any group. This leads to under valuing what the players have done. CBS can't make the shots, run the court etc.

Players deserve credit for what they have done. Call them 'overachievers', 'fodder for stronger playoff teams' or an 'ordinary group', it is no discredit to CBS to state that we have some players who won't be out of place in a championship side and proved that this season.

Nobody is arguing we don't need some better cattle to win ribbons, but lets not begrudge our current team what they have done.

Who knows, he could get great great players and not be able to keep it going.

Hes a good coach, but he has to be more than a good coach in this league.

Yeah CBS has done a tremendous job with the hand he was dealt this year and deserves all the credit in the world for that.  But that's not the same as being able to coach elite talent deep into the playoffs, which is what we're looking for long run.  So far, so good though.

It's definitely worth noting that the best recent example of a young coach taking an inexperienced roster of lightly regarded players to a shockingly mediocre record is Doc Rivers in Orlando.

We may not have elite talent but watching the Atlantic leading Raptors play is there really a big gap talent wise between us and them?

Smart is a star.

Kid goes 4-12 and still made more of a difference than the other 9 players on the court.
My biases, in order of fervor:
Pro:
Smart, Brown, Hayward, Tatum, Kemba, Grant Williams, Sleepy Williams, Edwards!

Anti:
Kanter, Semi, Theis, Poierier

I concur, but also remember he made past his prime Rondo look like his old self (led league in assists). I think that's a feat, considering Rondo's numbers in Dallas.

that usually is the case. but for the second half of this season, CBS is making do with merely ok talent and winning. not bad at all.... unless you are saying the celtics now have "great talent" for the second half of the season.  ;D

but in the playoffs, i think a reckoning will arrive for this team. ok talent only gets you so far, even with a great coach.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
