It's NBA marketing.  Relax.

This isn't any different from any of the other NBA marketing programs they roll out there.  This one happens to be directed at the hispanic community.

Taking the holier than thou route because of usage of "The"?   Give me a break.

"Holier than thou"

Really? ???

Yeah.  Why should it matter?  Because its the "Boston Celtics" and not just some run of the mill franchise like the Bucks or Raptors or something?  Honestly, who cares.  It's marketing & it was practice shirts.

The NBA is trying to broaden its audience & make some $ here.

But why can't people be upset about them changing the wonderful and beautiful Celtics jersey just to make a tiny bit of money? (though I don't think they've done it to the actual jersey yet?)

People are allowed to be upset about putting ads on the jersey to make more money though?

I think people simply don't want such a huge alteration to something that's we've been seeing for our entire histories.  Especially considering that history and tradition are more important to the Celtics than any other franchise.

That, and of course, there's no where near the same level of Spanish-speaking people in Boston as those other three (that I'm aware of).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

This is the argument I've been making. I believe it's a legitimate question to ask due to this fact.

Now, if the whole league is going to start paying tribute to the global trend by doing these types of things regularly then I'm fine with it. Honestly, I'm fine with it either way. I just didn't understand the need to do it in a city with a much smaller Hispanic percentage when it's been primarily restricted to those teams in cities with high Hispanic populations.

I think sleeve and advertisements are worse, and a larger alteration than what's being discussed here.

As to the markets, it's called a slow rollout. It's the same reason the Warriors were the first team to wear sleeved jerseys.

I am pretty sure that there are Celtics fans outside of Boston, and many of them speak Spanish.

As for changing up uniforms, I don't recall much hubbub when the C's went to Italy for preseason, and they rolled out the Italian-themed jerseys.

People have a right to be upset about changes.  Personally, I think the impending ad thing is going to be terrible and I cringe at the thought of it.

I really have no problems if the league is doing things like this for a couple of regular season games here & there.  Like I said, it's part of their marketing.  So instead of standard Celtics unis for all 82 regular season games (which wasn't even the case before this), it'll be 77 or something.  I'm fine with that.  This isn't a uniform overhaul.  To me, this is like the Yankees or Red Sox using red, white, & blue in their insignia for a game or something.

Plus, in this instance, it wasn't even the uniforms.  It was warm ups.

But to think that the Celtics should be held to a different standard & above this for no real reason besides being the Boston Celtics?  C'mon.

I agree, but I think it's still the same principle.  I personally think the nicknames thing is stupid too, and people here might not be so warm to it for reasons above.

Just saying, I know I personally wondered, "what's that about? I don't understand the point," the first time I saw the El Heat jersey.  That was the general consensus among my friends, it's just not relate-able for us because our culture doesn't have as much Spanish influence.  On the other hand, I'm the general consensus in Miami was, "hey, that's pretty cool."

People have the right to be upset about whatever their little heart desires. Other people have the right to point a finger and laugh at ridiculous and unreasonable "upsets".

I had forgotten about that, but I loved it when I saw it. Also, first game of the Big Three era, IIRC.

Because that makes perfect sense, they were actually in Italy.  If we want to roll it out for a pre-season game in Spain or Latin America, I think that's awesome.  Please not in the Garden.

Very true & I'd probably have a much different viewpoint on the ad thing if I grew up overseas, for exampel.

Ní maith liom Celtics Los ceachtar agus go mbeadh fearr go mór Gaeilge na hÉireann. Béarla an teanga de na diabhal heathen.
?? ??? ?????. ????? ?? ?????? ???

never mind the above. sigh. cb does not allow fonts that are not roman based. how sad that we are compelled to write in one script and one script only. one would hope we were beyond that level of provincialism.
;D

Eja, correct me here, but it says something like "I don't like Los Celtics either, they should be the "Irish Irish (or the Irish Celtics or the Gaelic Celtics). English is the language of the heathen devils (or devilish heathens?)" right?
I can pop out a tad of Irish Gaelic if I need to but something like this requires google translate and that's exactly what it says.

I like my Irishness and my Celtics and don't really like them being other stuff. Annoys me they would put it in some other language but not actually Gaelic. This is the part where someone shows me they did in on St. Patrick's Day back in 2012 or something. Still.

I'll go along with that. But I won't go along with assigning views to people or attributing thoughts to them that they didn't say they had.
