My two favorite comedians are:
1. American Redneck, Jeff Foxworthy
2. Russian Redneck, Yakov Smirnoff
but....Edgar and his elephant jokes comes in a very close third!
-
I like all comedians but Dave Chapelle is my favourite.
-
Mitch Hedberg.
(I actually think Chapelle is funnier, but I wanted to get Hedberg mentioned)
-
David Cross.
Fearless and fierce.
-
Daniel Tosh has some good stand-up though I'm not the biggest fan of 'Tosh.0' ;D I think he can do better than just criticizing youtube vids...
-
brian reagan is hilarious
-
Dane Cook. ;)
-
Bill Burr
Demitri Martin
-
I gotta go and say Katt Williams here. That guy really tore me apart with his pimp stuff and that high pitched voice of his.
-
Louie C.K.
Bill Burr
Bill Maher
Carlos Iglesias
Ralphie Maye
Dave Chappelle
Bill Maher
Mitch Hedburg
I love stand up and those are my absolute favorites.
-
old school:
Rodney Dangerfield....nobody funnier...except maybe Eddie Murphy in Delirious.
-
Louie C.K.
Bill Burr
Bill Maher
Carlos Iglesias
Ralphie Maye
Dave Chappelle
Bill Maher
Mitch Hedburg
I love stand up and those are my absolute favorites.
I liked Louie C.K.'s short lived sitcom.
No one makes fun of their kids better in standup than Louie C.K.
-
Richard Pryor anyone :)
-
Jim Gaffigan
Ricky Gervais
Dane Cook
Zach Galifianakis
George Carlin
Lewis Black
-
chappelle
-
in no particular order:
bill cosby
dave chappelle
robin williams
-
Female, too. Going back, way back, Gracie Allen Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett. Early days of her career, Rosanne Barr, now Ellen Degeneris. Guess you can tell I don't much care for the hard core stuff, more the naive, funny stuff (although Rosanne straddled the line). Robin Williams is another funny man (who stands with one foot planted firmly on each side of the line).
-
I love Eddie Murphy's Delirious, it may be the funniest recording of all time, but he hasn't come close to it again (Raw fell pretty short imo)
Mitch Hedberg was great and from the recordings I've heard pretty consistent
Steven Wright, he's the man
I don't know if it's the shock value of Danny Tanner dropping naughty words, but Bob Saget is on the list as well
But all time, favorite comedian (standup) has to be Chris Rock
And Jim Gaffigan's Hot Pockets skit is amazing
-

Well I do my best
even when Elephants are on vacations.
thank you for the honorary mention.. :D
-
current good comedians:
Louis C.K.
Todd Berry
Doug Stanhope
Eugene Mirman
Patton Oswalt
Maria Bamford
Zack Galifinakis
Katt Williams
-
Mike Birbiglia
Jim Gaffigan
Daniel Tosh
Dimitri Martin
and probably in that order
-
Tosh is number one easy man, come on!
I do like Birbigs though. Jim Gaffigan was funny, now...meh. Kind of over exposed if you listen/watch a lot of stuff.
Mitch Hedberg is still the number one though.
-
How this man hasn't been mentioned is beyond me:

cantinflas and chespirito
I loved Cantinflas. He used to be a semi-regular on the Ed Sullivan Show. Afraid I don't know chespirito...but I haven't know a lot of the comedians mentioned on this thread. I must have been very sheltered, or, more probably, just my totally self involved, unobservant of anything that does not directly concern ME persona...if I ever move back to those long dark lonely nights in New England, I have a lot of catching up to do and a lot of stuff to research in my down time! lol

The Late and Great Jerry Clower. If you haven't heard anything from him go look him up. Clean comedy at its finest.
George Lopez is unbelievably funny.
Bernie Mac killed me no matter what he was saying.
Chapelle is incredible.
Tommy Savitt is hilarious.
Larry the Cable guy is a guilty pleasure.
Rowan Atkinson could be the funniest overall on the planet.
A few other very honorable mentions : Tim Allen, Billy Crystal, Andy Dick, Redd Foxx.

Thanks, EJPLAYA. I appreciate the comments. I do know some of these and will check out Jerry Clower (hope they have some cds at Barnes & Nobel, as this sounds like the kind of stuff I like). :) tp

Robin Williams
Russell Peters (can't believe no one's mentioned him yet)
Rodney Dangerfield
Chris Rock had a couple of good shows
Jeff Dunham (ventriloquist but has gotten incredibly funnier during his career)
Bobby Collins
Dane Cook is grossly overrated.
Carlin went in the tank after the mid-80's. Saw him live and started the show off by telling everyone he was going to do old bits. Royally sucked that night

I also agree on these, slam the king. (don't tell anyone, but I loved George Carlin. Listening to him was one of my "guilty little pleasures" because for some reason, I could overlook the language and innuendo with him...I do love the good use of language, and I think Carlin was the master of finding humor in ordinary things and language. His view of things had a great naivete and childish quality, even though the things he was examining might be adult content.
-
Moms Mabley,comediene...the best i ever heard,saw live@the Apollo.
-
I always try to catch Jim Gaffigan's standup.

Just looked up a couple short online clips....He is funny! Everyone wanted to know why I was laughing out loud (I have been listening to music all day with the headphones, and shushing them). ;D

LOTS of his stuff on YOU TUBE. He's got that old southern preacher sound to him and is an amazing story teller.
-
Wow no love for Joe Rogan? He's a bit crude but stupidly funny.
In addition:
Dave Chappelle
Russell Peters
George Carlin
George Lopez
Denis Leary
Eddie Murphy
Robin Williams

My fiancee' and I went to see him last Saturday. Absolutely hilarious. His live show is absolutely worth going to. Highly recommended.
-
RIP
Bernie Mac
Was so so so amazing live. No one on the same show every wanted to follow him so he always went last.
I also love in no particular order (and have seen them all live and they were amazing)
Chris Rock
Louis CK
Lisa Lampenelli
Earthquake
Bob Sagat (Yes "The Full House" Bob Sagat...he kills live don't believe me go see him and thank me later)
-
Mitch Hedberg
Jim Gaffigan
Tosh
Chappelle
Jim Brewer (Sp?) His last stand up special was quite hilarious...
-
If humor ever dies, the whole world will die with it, I think. Long live laughter...it keeps us human and connects us happily to each other.
-
In no particular order:
Robin Williams
Christopher Titus (can't believe no one has mentioned him yet!)
Jeff Dunham
Larry the Cable Guy
Ron White
Bill Engvall
Jeff Foxworthy
Dennis Miller
-
Dennis Leary, George Carlin, Sarah Silverman, Bill Maher, Ron White are my favorite standup acts. Also like Chappelle and I've recently gotten way into Jon Stewart.
-
So many to name I know I will forget some...
No Todd Barry yet??? Really
Jackie Marting
Mitch Hedberg
Rodney Dangerfield
Jim Gaffigan
Rowan Atkinson
Ron White
Never much cared for guys like George Carlin and Bill Mahr who, to me, seemed to try and use the mic as a soapbox and an op-ed opportunity.
Then of course there are old classics that didn't do stand up like the Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Bros.
-
Props to Yakmanev for being the first to say Todd Barry. One of the best.
Off the top of my head:
Woody Allen
Richard Pryor (really, nobody has mention him?)
Albert Brooks (and his standup isn't even his best work. The guy was so far ahead of everyone else. Amazing. And made 3 or 4 absolute masterpiece films)
Mel Brooks/Carl Reiner (not really standup, more a comedy duo, but funnier than anything there is. Period.)
Louis CK
Don Rickles
Garry Shandling (again, great standup but made one of the 2 or 3 best TV shows ever)
Todd Barry
Dave Chappelle
Mitch Hedberg
Bill Hicks
Neil Hamburger
Patton Oswalt
Lenny Bruce
Eddie Murphy
Dylan Moran
Chris Rock
Norm MacDonald
Ok, that is lengthy. Big comedy nerd here.
-
Aziz Ansari
-
A lot but more recently I find Greg Giraldo's work on the Comedy Central Roasts pretty funny, and to a lesser extent, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.

haha I was going to say Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim but even with the anonymity of the internet I was too ashamed to admit being a fan. That being said, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! does grow on you and I will never know how they get such marquee guest on their show. I always look forward to seeing what kind of weird offbeat surrealism they are going to do next. For your health!
-
Louis C.K.
Patton Oswalt
Conan O'brien
Zach Galifianakis
Jim Gaffigan
John Stewart
Norm Macdonald
also, no one has mentioned seinfeld, even if not for his standup, his show is the most popular comedy in recent memory.

Great idea for a thread and great thread, I didn't know a lot of the names you've brought up, so I guess I'll do a lot of research on youtube ;D
As spanish speaker, I think Les Luthiers from Argentina are the best, big artists and performers. 40 plus years performing and still as funny as ever. Here is a video with english subtitles:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjSuNKK7o30 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjSuNKK7o30)
For standup comedians, in Spain we had Miguel Gila (an all-time classic) and Pepe Rubianes (passed away last year at 62) and also a lot of young comedians. If you speak spanish, you might like them. And in case you don't speak spanish, we have the Catalan (like me) group "El Tricicle":

Indeed, however I love Tom Goes to the Mayor way more than Tim and Eric. The subtle humor in that show is fantastic.

How could I forget...the late great Red Skelton!

Shame on me for overlooking one of my favorites that's playing the MGM Grand at Foxwoods on 9/11 -- Stephen Lynch. The guy's first special and comedy bits are hysterical. Special Fred rules

Demitri Martin
Louis C.K
Ralphie May (so underrated)
Carlos Mencia
Eddie Griffin
Bruce Bruce
Kat Williams
Rasheed Thurmond (R.I.P. What a potential)
But going back to the old school, talke about Robin Harris, Red Foxx, Richard Pryor...
-
Marc Maron is pretty funny and bill burr is probably my favorite. all on netflix
