I wanted to do a very scientific poll
-
kinda bias, I voted Rogue One cuz Donnie Yen is in it :)
plus I wasn't a fan of Kylo Ren. I felt his character acted like a teenager and doesn't have that "dark side" feel
-
I didn't really care for Force Awakens. It was more like "Star Wars Greatest Hits" than a movie.
-
I just couldn't buy a chick that have not taken a "jedi" lesson defeating Kylo so easily.
....and call me old fashioned, but I like my heroes to be masculine. Unless we are talking about a totally hot Wonder Woman. It just sells better. ;D

The force awakens was a terrible film.
-
Force awakens moved the entire thing along a bit. So I liked that a bit better. Rogue one we already knew what happened in general. We just got new details.
-
havent rouge one
but a huge fan of IP Man so i know its all dat
-
Force Awakens was good, and it was great to see Luke, Han, and Leia again, and served as a needed re-introduction of the series for younger generations, but Rogue One was outstanding, easily one of the best Star Wars movies ever.
-
Rogue One.
Force Awakens was a New Hope rehash. Also didn't like how they dealt with Han.
Thought Rogue One was extremely well done & more entertaining.
High hopes for Episode VIII, though. I think Rian Johnson is gonna do a good job.
-
Felt they are two different kinds of movies. I enjoyed both.
Rogue is much more serious and a story of a team coming together for their beliefs. Its more adult as you think about that system of belief and its required sacrifice.
Awaken is much lighter. Awakens is a Star Wars legacy movie for sure having lighter elements with the stars being young adults thrown together by fate. They step up to become heroes and face down big evil. It speaks more to youth.
-
Rogue one was much better.
-
Force awakens was too similar to New Hope. I felt like I had seen the movie before.
-
I keep coming to the conclusion that Rogue One is the 2nd best Star Wars movie ever after Empire.
If I had to rank it..
I suppose
Empire
Rogue
Revenge
Clone Wars
Return of Jedi
New Hope
Phantom
Force Awakens

Force Awakens, even if it was for nostalgia's sake.
Rogue One tries to be a hardened, serious war movie.
Well, the problem with that for me is that Star Wars, in the movies anyway, is not a morally gray, nuanced world. What makes Star Wars most appealing to me is the fantasy / hero's journey elements, combined with fun and humor.
I liked K2 (Alan Tudyk is great), but for the most part I felt that Rogue One lacked characterization and humor, and ultimately it was pretty bleak. I appreciate the effort to cast a light on the "darker side" of war, which isn't really acknowledged much in the other Star Wars movies. Still, I think Rogue One is mostly missing what makes the best Star Wars movies so appealing (to me). The trouble with showing the "morally gray" parts of the Rebellion vs Empire war is that the sides are still so starkly drawn: the Rebellion is Good, the Empire is Evil.
If the main characters were better developed in Rogue One, the ending might be more meaningful to me. Why does Jyn shift from a cynical survive-at-all-costs loner to a ra-ra-Give-It-All-For-The-Rebellion! person? They don't really explain that shift very well. Does seeing a hologram of her father really change her that much, that quickly? What motivates Captain Whatshisname to give everything for the rebellion? Why are the two dudes from the temple city so willing to lay their lives down?
I was also disappointed that Ben Mendelsohn's character was so thin. They didn't give him a lot to do in the film apart from being Unhinged, Desperate, and Evil. In general, Rogue One suffers from a lack of properly characterized villains. Grand Moff Tarkin is apparently the main bad guy, and he's a difficult-to-look-at CGI rendering. Ben Mendelsohn's guy is not very smart, and not very menacing.
The lack of interesting bad guys makes the ultimate triumph of the rebels sort of lacking for me. We always knew they would get the death star plans. That they had to sacrifice a bunch of people to do it is somewhat affecting, but lacks punch because the characters were thin, as I said before. Their accomplishment was kinda weakened for me because of how uncomplicated their task was -- basically, they needed to survive long enough under fire to flip a bunch of inconveniently placed switches. Not much creative thinking involved in that one. Nobody even really had to "use the force," except for the monk dude, possibly.
None of the characters in Rogue One were as interesting to me as Adam Driver's character in Force Awakens. Conflicted, powerful but raw, not quite committed to being evil.
Rogue One was an entertaining action movie, but the story doesn't have a ton of lasting impact for me. It was a nice stop-gap between Force Awakens and the next movie, though.
I'm looking forward to seeing Mark Hamill in the next one. (That was my biggest misgiving about Force Awakens -- no Mark Hamill; that and the fact that they completely recycled the Death Star story)

I have to disagree with some of the Rogue One supporters. While I enjoyed Rogue One as a change of pace film in between the main episodes, but I feel the basic problem with it was we already know the outcome. Since we already know how the narrative fits into the overall universe the film loses suspense for me. That said, I think Rogue One was a lot better than I expected. I enjoyed seeing the fully menacing Vader at the end of the movie. It was very well produced.
While I agree with some of the criticism of The Force Awakens, it was a re-hash to a certain point. (I wish they would just completely shelve the super weapon idea and never use it again.) But to me it did contain that magic / mystery that made star wars so interesting in the first place, so I would say I prefer it over Rogue One.

That was far and away the best part of Rogue One and likely the only part I'll remember about that movie which was, as you said, fun and well put together but that's about all.
The Force Awakens had problems as well but as a reboot to the franchise, I think it reestablished the world and moved things along in interesting ways and with a bit more polish than Rogue One did.

Force Awakens was OK, but was slightly incoherent. So apparently the Imperials are fighting the New Republic and the"resistance." But who is winning? What is the political situation? And why does the resistance seem so decrepit and underfunded?
I'm not convinced the writers know the answers to those questions (much like Abrams' TV series, "Lost.")
Abrams throws a lot of interesting visuals on-screen - which is his strength - but there's not a lot underneath. He requires COMPLETE suspension of disbelief. He wrote "Armageddon" lol. And I have yet to find anyone who can explain the nonsensical plot of "Star Trek Into Darkness" without cheating and looking it up. The "plot" in his movies is usually just a device to set up the next insane action scene. I find it jarring and obvious. This one was better than most of his other work, but it certainly was not great.
Rogue One OTOH was crisp, clean, focused. It tied into the original films in ways I hadn't thought possible, while introducing plenty of interesting new characters and scenery.
The best thing about it was that it showed how nightmarish life under the Empire would be. The Imperials are arguably worse than they've ever been, and it shows why even the most jaded individuals could be coaxed into giving their lives up to fight them.
The squabbling, cruelty, and petty thuggery among the Imperial officers was disturbingly realistic, the sort of thing you hear about in real-life dictatorships.
Really terrific stuff. I liked Force Awakens, but really Rogue One is just a better film in almost every area.

TP
I like J.J. Abrams set direction, style and feel . . . but man, the casting and story was all kinds of wrong

Man, I hope you're right about Johnson

I like The Force Awakens more because it's a continuation of the original storyline, and I was very eager to learn what all the major players had been up to since Return of the Jedi.

Awesome review Kraid, and I agree with every point. TP
I'd be curious to know your thoughts on Cloverfield. Wasn't that an Abrams movie as well?
I really liked that movie.

Hmm
Interesting take.
The movie had a lot of potential, that's for sure.
I think, ultimately, what made me not like it was Kylo Ren.
He just wasn't scary. At all.
I was hoping they would do more with Captain Phasma....she seemed quite interesting ;)

Rogue One was a good stand alone film but the whole third act made zero sense in the story line. It doesn't work with A New Hope. How can the Empire chase down Lea's ship in Hyperspace? How could she claim she didn't have the plans or was on a Diplomatic Mission? How come Vader was so bad ass at the end but two days later he had that, lets say, less than bad ass fight with Obiwan? It should have been a spy movie, the big battle at the end made no sense.

Maybe I need to watch Rogue One again, because I thought the plot melded perfectly with a New Hope. I really didn't spot any holes in plotline.
As far as Vader being a "badass"
It's much easier for him to have his way with a Diplomatic envoy than it is against a fellow Jedi like Obi Wan, someone who is possibly more skilled than him.
-
Well, in A New Hope, Lea tries to tell Vader that they are on a diplomatic mission. He was five feet away when her ship took off? Why would you even try that line?? Why did he never point that out?? He says the plans were beamed aboard the ship yet He was chasing down the guy carrying them. Lea's ship took off into hyperspace. How did they track them down and how did they end up in the opening scene?

Guess I gotta watch them back-to-back
Kinda fuzzy on those details
Maybe there is a continuity error

the force awakens was a straight out walk out after 40 minutes. too bad i drove to another city with my friends and i couldn't leave them hangin'.
Rouge one, was like a nice 6/10, just not enough.
Force awakens should have never ever happened, the kylo or whatever couldn't wait to show his face, it took 3 episodes for Darth Vader to do so, that girl went from what is a lightsaber to a lightsaber master within seconds, and the best part was when they planed that planet attack:
"We have to blow up that planet station"
"okay let's do it"
"but they have a shield protecting it"
"okay, we will disable the shield first"
"okay, lets do it"
i was laughing at that point...

Casting that GOOBER from the awful show "Girls" was the biggest mistake.

No kidding . . . just horrendous casting; not scary or interesting at all.

Force Awakens was a retread of New Hope and a poor one at that. It might be ok to some one who had not seen New Hope. I thought the villain (Kylo Ren) was great until he took off his mask. Then I was like who let the emo into a Stars Wars movie. After watching, it I had the vague feeling I had seen this movie before. The writers in Hollywood are truly devoid of ideas, maybe this strike could get some new and vibrant blood in there instead of rehashing old ideas.
Rogue for me, it's a better movie and I did not see it before.

Couldn't agree more!
I remember being very disappointed when Kylo Ren took off his mask so early in the movie.
Very anti-climactic
If you're gonna have that kind of a reveal so quickly, they should have maybe given him a scarier disfigured face or something, maybe robotic.

Force Awakens all the way
-
Force Awakens all the way
Why?
-
Force Awakens all the way
Why?
because the actress in Rogue one was blah... compared to Daisy Ridley (Rey) in Force Awakens
Seeing Harrison Ford again was awesome
Just the overall flow and journey of Force Awakens was better imo
-
I wanted to do a very scientific poll
bur your question is not "specific"
you can create 5 different versions of Force Awakens vs Rogue one..... and a fan may always prefer Rogue one for example
If your question is : which movie was better made.... imo it was Force Awakens...Especially with the leading actress Daisy Ridley .... the Rogue One actress accent was thick... just her acting overall was so.... that line "Rebellions are built on hope." ... she didn't do it justice
The humor, action scenes, direction was better in Force Awakens imo... JJ Abrams did a fine job
-
The plot for Force Awakens was utter garbage. But the Star Wars universe was enough to get enjoyment out of the film, to go along with a great cast.
Rogue One had a great plot, but the final act was a little sloppy and the whole thing was a little predictable.
-

I definitely didn't have any dread about Ren like I did about Vader, but I was a kid when I first saw Star Wars, so maybe that had something to do with my view of Vader.

No, your first take is the correct one.
Darth Vader is an epic, timeless villain.
Even the Darth Vader comics are lightyears ahead of the normal Star Wars comics.

Excellent points
I think I agree on all of them.
In the final act of Rogue One when Gen. Akbar coordinates that stupid "Corvette whatever" maneuver, that was utterly preposterous and facepalm worthy. A small cargo spacecraft somehow has the power, torque and propulsion to move a Star Destroyer into another one. Huh??
-
Ren is nowhere near as cool as Vader. He's a spaz and he killed his own dad while being obviously manipulated by the Sith. I've got no respect for him. He's a punk with anger issues.
Vader was actually menacing and a badass.
That being said I enjoyed Force Awakens the most. The scope of it is bigger.
Rogue One is important as it gives us the backstory to how the Rebels found the plans for the Death Star and its only weakness but... the heroes just go wiped away in the blink of an eye. So there's just nothing further to come out of it.
I really hope we see more development from the key leads from Force Awakens. It will also be intriguing to see what role Luke has to play in the 2nd movie in the series.

Yeah, that's the big shame of it.
I really dug the cast of Rogue One, in fact I liked the female lead much better than Daisy Ridley.
Everyone got smoked in the movie, so doing any kind of a follow-up will be impossible. :-\
