If Celts picked 9th instead

They would have picked Dirk

But glad with the outcome

Either way it was a win win

I’ll stick with the Captain, because we know how it turned out. I’ll take the title, the KG era, and the BRK picks.

Umm Dirk also won a championship

Not sure how you managed to assume that Roy believes the Celtics couldn't have won with Dirk......

He's merely saying that he wouldn't trade the totality of Pierce's career (plus BKN picks) for the uncertainty  of Dirk.  I feel the exact same way.  There's no way to predict how the Celtics would have built around him.  I'd like to think that they would have made some Finals runs with Dirk, especially in a weak Eastern Conference.  The problem is that the entire context of the league might be different.

I would have loved to see two or three titles during the Pierce and KG era, but I wouldn't change the 1998 draft if I could go back in time.  On a side note, I will always cherish Dirk's amazing Finals performance in 2011.  It easily one of my favorite series wins by a non-Celtics team.

Exactly right. We know what Pierce’s career brought, and it was an awesome ride.  We have no idea what Dirk would have brought.!Maybe we win multiple titles. Or, maybe he gets traded.  We have no idea.

Dirk 100%

Never even heard of this Pearce guy.

Steve Pearce of the Red Sox.

Dirk was selected 9th in 1998 and Paul Pierce 10th.  If you had a do-over and could get Dirk or Pierce, who would be your Choice?

It's a good question. As much as I love Paul, I feel Nowtizki had the more successful career (though not by much)

Plus Nowitzki's height would've been a match-up problem for a lot of other players and he was a better rebounder.

Probably Dirk.

The Truth.

Unless Dirk has recently changed his nickname.

As things played out, I don't think KG would've came to BOS with Dirk here.

Could Danny have assembled a team around Dirk? Especially in the late 90s - early 2000s?

Danny?  Heck it might have been possible for Pitino to stick around if he had Dirk.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

lol I don't think Rick would've lasted long - even with Dirk.

I feel sorry for the man but he has been roasted in BOS. Don't think even Dirk would've saved him.

Pitino the coach was fine, it was Pitino the GM that was the problem, so I do wonder if he had Dirk what he might have done, as he really wanted Dirk.

WOW good catch didn't realize that Danny didn't take over until 2003.

Well, at the time of the draft I really wanted dirk to fall to #10.  I’d seen him in one of those international games and bought into him immediately.  Obviously it didn’t happen.

And since it didn’t happen, I’m good with how it turned out.
