I'm no cap expert. Can somebody explain to me why we shouldn't be offering Brown for Lillard?
I’ve seen different layouts of Lillard’s current deal, but I believe the correct one has his final year as a player option in 26-27. In that season he’ll make $63M. I believe he’ll be 35.
I think the idea of being on the hook for 35 year old Lillard is scary given Brown’s extension would secure him through 28-29 (?) and only be around 30 or 31 at that point.
It comes down to a much shorter window and possibility of being hamstrung with a colossal contract for a possibly declining 35 year old in just 3 years.
Even still, I think Brown for Lillard has to be a consideration.
I just think it makes a lot of sense. On paper, Lillard/Tatum/Porzingis fit together very well. I think we can preserve a lot of our depth in the short-term, too. That trio with balanced, solid depth at every position is very tempting to me, even though I acknowledge that it shortens our window (though KP's extension leads me to believe we're shooting for a three-year window here anyway).
Worst case, you probably block Miami from pulling off a heist. Getting Lillard for a package built around Tyler freaking Herro would be robbery. With Jaylen on the table, IMO they'd have to dangle Bam to compete. Maybe Portland still prefers to give Lillard what he wants in terms of destination, but I'd be a lot less concerned about a Lillard/Herro/Butler Miami team than I would be a Lillard/Butler/Bam team.
