Bill O'Brien will return to the Patriots after agreeing to a deal Tuesday to become New England's next offensive coordinator, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Low.

O'Brien, 53, who spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama, now is back to where his NFL career began in 2007 as a coaching assistant.

In that first stint in New England, O'Brien quickly rose through the ranks on Bill Belichick's coaching staff to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, spending three years (2009-11) in that role before departing for head-coaching positions at Penn State (2012-13) and with the Houston Texans (2014-20).

Funny but at the same time ridiculous.  Just how badly had the father been vilifying O'Brien to have his kid react that way.

I agree.  You give one kid a Deandre Hopkins autographed helmet and the other kids gets an autographed picture of Bill O'Brien.  That just isn't right.  Clear discrepancy in the gift.  I sure hope the O'Brien was a joke and the kid got a helmet with Watson or some other player signed on it (and I say watson since Deandre isn't on the Texans anymore)

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson

I'm assuming it was a gag gift the way it was staged.

There’s probably more to the story - and worse things have been done to kids - but yeah, it was a gag gift after giving the brother a special gift that provoked an over the top reaction. The O’Brien photo was for a good laugh at the expense of a kid. As someone who had a dad who was big on teasing to get a reaction - I’m probably over-sensitive to it. Some will think it’s all in fun, no big deal; some might even think it builds toughness. I  thought it was mean. Not saying I think the dad is a bad dad (there’s a lot more to it than one clip), just not my cup o’ tea.

Notice how almost all these teams are doing a ton to help their QBs after Year 2? Dolphins and Eagles made moves and loaded up to help Hurts + Tua last offseason. Bills did the same with Allen a few years ago. Chiefs and Bengals have done a ton to help their QBs and in Burrow's case, beefed up the O-Line to help him out

Now the Bears are doing the same for Fields as he enters Year 3.

Meanwhile, the Pats aren't doing enough to help Mac at all. It's fine if you don't think Mac is a Mahomes/Allen. He's not. But here's the thing, neither are guys like Hurts. But those guys still have success and the teams are doing everything to help them out and put them in a position to succeed. Mac hasn't had that.

Do we even have any players at the skills positions that you can say are better than the skills positions on these other teams like BUF/KC/CIN (Hint: We don't)

Patriots have to be one of the least talented teams in the NFL at this point, on both ends of the field. On offense they have Stevenson who looks like a stud, we will see if he can repeat what he did last year. Then Judon and Uche on defense. Who else is elite? Bill is not a good GM.

Onwenu is close to elite. But I'm lower on Uche would not call him elite.

Who have we lost on defense vs. last year? Obviously McCourtey is impossible to replace, but most of last year's (good) defense is still gonna be there. Belichick has always built defenses around depth, and his defenses have consistently been top of the league despite not having many "elite" guys

Almost every off-season for the past 20+ years has gone like this in the first couple of days, yet we still have 6 Superbowls. Tearing your hair out over Bill not making splashy moves on day 1 is a waste of energy

Pats weren’t even a top 10 defense last season. They were good, not great and I think the secondary is going to struggle this year. I’m more concerned about the offense and not having better wide receivers, though. Kinda need those to be competitive in todays NFL. They did win 6 SB’s, with the greatest QB of all time on the team. Those days are over, though. Tom Brady is not walking through that door.

I think the problem is that Bill is drafting like he still has a Brady that has the Midas touch to turn dross into gold. Mac needs all the help he can get.

The solution? Get rid of his best receiver over the last two years and his "go-to" target.  ::)

Mac's comments about Meyers after the season were nothing but full praise and hope he'd stick around. Sadly he won't. I know Meyers isn't a flashy alpha, but he was still a dependable #2 or 3 receiver and in today's market, 11M is nothing. No reason not to keep him around and still being able to add a #1. Idk why we have to "replace" guys instead of simply adding to a solid group.

And as of now, I'm still not sure what their plan at WR is. Parker, Bourne and Thornton are the only ones under contract for 2023 so far, and in 2024 it's just Thornton. They need TWO wide receivers, not one if you ask me.

FWIW, the Pats just freed up another $5M of cap space with the McCourty retirement restructure.

Everyone's focused on WR but they have some other real pressing needs with the OL and improving the defense.  They didn't get roped into the silly season Day 1 overpays.  You'd imagine to see some more activity now.
