Although the Celtics may lose tonight, I hope the fans will accept such an outcome and won't invade the court and attack players or other fans. In Europe it is a big problem lately in football. St. Etienne a French team relegated today after losing by penalties. The reaction by the crowd? See here for yourself:

Luckily, that’s mostly unheard of in American sports.

Riots when a team wins or loses?  Sometimes.  But there haven’t similar attacks by large groups storming the floor.

It doesn't usually happen in the U.S. thankfully, but one notable example was actually in Canada. Not the field, but after the Canucks in hockey lost the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals to the Bruins in 7 games (Game 7 was at Vancouver), there were riots and even some violence in Vancouver afterwards.

I remember that. Nice to see the Bruins win the championship on the road. I know Los Angeles goes crazy when their team wins the championship. Windows getting smashed, rioting and stuff  ::)

Sometimes though, when Boston/New England wins a championship you do have some places like UMASS Amherst and other college campuses going insane and smashing windows, rioting, doing dumb stuff, etc. too

In England and the Netherlands there have been dangerous situations as well. Today in The Hague fireworks were deliberately thrown at opposing fans in the stands where families with children where present. Things are really escalating. Throwing beer cups and stuff at players was basically accepted as part of the deal with hostile crowds, but it's becoming more unpredictable and dangerous. France though is taking the cake. This situation in St Etienne was not even that surprising. People like to blame this behaviour on sports itself. Truth is that society in Western Europe is in serious decay. This is merely an expression of the problems here.

This is a particularly European thing to be honest. It sometimes happen here in Australia, but only really with soccer.

This kind of thing would only ever happen with Philly fans :P

In Portugal a couple of years ago, fans invaded Sporting FC's training facility to beat up their own players. European soccer certainly takes pressure to win games to new levels.
