Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens said he tried to put James Young into Friday's lopsided win over the Washington Wizards but was told the second-year swingman couldn't play due to a sore shoulder after sleeping on it wrong.

“He told me his shoulder hurt; couldn’t play," said Stevens. "He went through some rehab that day, went through some rehab [Saturday] morning, practiced, though we didn’t go full speed [Saturday], and is available [Sunday versus the Magic] pending his warmup. I tried to put him in [on Friday] with six minutes to go."

Young, the No. 17 pick in the 2014 draft, has played only four minutes in two appearances this season and made the only shot he took -- a 3-pointer during three minutes of trash time in a loss to the Atlanta Hawks last week.

My thoughts on this? Smh.

I'm sorry, but if you seriously wanted to play, then you would be willing to do whatever it takes. Even if your shoulder is sore or stiff, I mean at least get 2-3 minutes in garbage time.

I seriously question this guys work ethic, and drive to be great.

I'm starting to see so many red flags, but hopefully he takes this as motivation to do well if he gets any minutes tonight.

He can go. RJ will be a much better pro in my eyes. In the short time RJ has played this season, he has shown me more than Young did all last year.

sounds like a serious attitude problem.

Is this the first time a BB missed a game because he slept on his shoulder wrongly?

I'm disappointed in Young, because I mean come on... You would rather sit on the bench, and not even play? I mean, if he had a chance to play, why couldn't he just tell Stevens that he would like to play limited minutes?

Barring a serious injury, I wouldn't want my player to sit out, cause he slept on his 'shoulder,' wrong...

Larry Bird would've played, and just shot left-handed if he had to.

Just something about this kid's body language that screams lack of motivation.

RJ's already way ahead of Young.

To be fair, I am guessing we don't have the full story.  Sleeping on it wrong is not a diagnosis.  As someone who has awakened with legit pulled muscles, I give some credence to the possibility that it may have been wise not to play.  Yes, Bird would have played, but he was able to play high quality basketball despite a range of maladies while Young is is barely able to play competent basketball at 100%.

Bird was better than young when he was 14 years old.

The downhill slide accelerated for Rondo after he "slipped in the shower." This incident sounds very similar.

He probably should have played. He had nothing to lose. It might have straightened out his shooting

Young is a throw in on a trade, RJ has already passed him.
