did they not just beat Philly without Kyrie?

Yes. We also beat Philly two other times this season with Kyrie.

Maybe it was more that Philly wasn't playing well than Boston in that third meeting (see Tobias Harris, turnovers, fouls).

Toronto is 13-3 without Kawhi this season. They should sign and trade him for Kyle Korver this offseason. Getting a shooter who doesn't ever need the ball will make them so much more dangerous.

Rofl. Literally never see takes like that.

In fact, you see Raps fans making the opposite claim.

This is 100% FACT. The sixers are a dream match up for the raptors because they can effectively handle Ben. they become headless chickens with him (Simmons). The Celtics on the other hand are a nightmare because we cannot handle kyrie.

Fans from other NBA teams want their respective teams to sign star players.

Some Celtic fans want to get rid of star players.

Two things.

First, some on/off per 100 possessions perspective (per Cleaning the Glass)

James Harden: +5.4
Giannis Antetokounmpo: +7.8
Anthony Davis: +8.4
Kyrie Irving: +9.1

Second, Danny did a good job explaining why other players shine more while Kyrie is out:

“do players like a bigger role when you have a guy that is your best scorer (out)? Yeah. Heck, when I used to play with Larry Bird, I never didn’t want Larry Bird on my team but I got very excited when Larry or Kevin (McHale) weren’t going to play in a game that night because that meant more shot and more opportunities and that was fun. But I knew that to win the big thing and to win it all you can’t be without those great players and that’s how I feel about Kyrie.”

The other Celtics are good players - when Kyrie is out we don’t suck. But it’s still better to have KI take those shots, especially in the playoffs, and he’s also now regularly putting up 8-10 assists. At the end of a game against a good team, not only can he get his own shot he can get where he wants on the court and create shots for other players.

Those on/off numbers are quite astounding

When Kyrie first played with the Celtics after Hayward was injured, the team won 16 in a row or something like that. That is the Kyrie that can put the C's over the hump. The Kyrie that averages 20 ppg, hands out 8 assists a game, orchestrates a balanced attack and dominates when only necessary.

The Kyrie that wants to average 25-26 ppg and dominate the ball in the 4th quarter is not.

Kyrie needs to realize the Celtics are a talented, deep team and he needs to ignite them, not smother them.

I watched Scal debate Cowherd and Whitlock and I pretty much disagreed with most of Scal’s arguments.  Saying stuff like Westbrook and Harden only want to win and don’t care so much about their numbers... he must be blind.

I don't see any reason why we can't have the best of both worlds.

Kyrie could move the ball more, push transition more and average over 8 assists. He can still own taking over when the team stalls or in the last 3 minutes. I know he has the world's best handle, but the team needs more pace and movement. Make the Paul Pierce level adjustments and make the team work first.

There is absolutely nothing that could make Kyrie into a bigger star than leading this team into the finals.

(sorry Roscoe, just saw your post)

Yes. We also beat Philly two other times this season with Kyrie.

so what exactly is this point that we need Kyrie to beat good teams?

Well that's a sample size of 1 this year. Because I look at the games we have played against top caliber teams this season and see what his impact has been in those games. He's our most reliable closer, nobody else comes close when it comes to getting us a bucket when we need it in a close game (pardon the pun).

What surprises me is how many people say "well look at how the others play without him, he must be holding them back" and the proposal to fix it is to remove the best player from the team. Instead I think we should be putting this on them, they have to figure out how to play better, while understanding that "playing better" doesn't necessarily mean scoring more points, but in shooting better, assisting better, etc.

It really comes down to style. Kyrie touches and dribbles the ball more than anyone in our team other than Brad Wanamaker. As a result people think he's a ballstopper and doesn't pass the ball:

But if you look at him in the context of the league overall he's not even in the top 30 in terms of touches (I had to make the font tiny to accommodate him):

I'm sure someone will come up with stats that prove he is a ball hog and that's fine. That's really the crux of all this for people - if you like Kyrie's style you will think he adds value to the team and nothing anyone will say will change your mind, and vice versa for those who don't. Good players tend to polarize more often than not.
