So just a few hours after stating the racism I witnessed in Florida, the Republican nominee for governor when discussing the black Democratic nominee said they didn't want to "monkey things up". Fox news stated they didn't condone that type of language.

Eh. Faux outrage. It’s not a racist expression.  “Monkey things up” = “throw a monkey wrench into things”. He was talking about how you don’t want to screw up the economy by injecting socialist ideas into our economic policy.

It's a legit phrase that has nothing to do with race.  But obviously there does exist the potential that he intentionally meant to imply black people are monkeys.  I don't have any idea what his true intention there was.

Either way, it's not a very smart thing to say given the propensity for people to see the worst in other's intentions.

For Both Roy and KG's Knee -

Both of you should know that historically using chimpanzee, monkey, ape - in connection with African Americans - is derogatory.

In some instances, of course. In this one, no way. Using idioms with no racist intent isn’t racist.

Monkey wrench, barrel of monkeys, monkey’s uncle, monkey business, monkey see monkey do, going ape, etc. None are racist.

Do you know him personally? Can we read his mind? He still should know not to use that.

This is 2018.

If you look at the link and see the hateful images of Pres. Barack Obama and the former first Lady this is public knowledge.

He should know better - regardless of his intent.

So, should he start using The N Word? And we give him the benefit of the doubt?

Because he "didn't mean anything by it?"

I am aware, I acknowledged as much in my previous post, and why I think it was a poor choice of words given the circumstances.

But the context in which it was used is not racist, so one must assume that he meant it in a rascist way, without actually knowing if he did in fact mean it that way.  Which is where people's biases come into play.

No bias here, KG - it's "MY" reality.

This country will become "OUR" reality when we start to realize that certain words and phrases have derogatory meaning and should NOT be used EVER - in whatever context.

Roy - I have read your posts for well over 12 or 13 years. I didn't become a blog member until Oct 2009. I lurked on the blog as an observer for several years before I actually joined it.

I know you are smarter than this.

Of course those words ALONE have no meaning to them - but - as the link I posted states - those words IN CONNECTION with African Americans - are derogatory.

To be honest I'm disappointed in you, roy. I believe you know this but are simply trying to insult my intelligence.

I'm admittedly not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I'm FAR FROM the dullest.

C'mon now.

I didn't mean bias in a good or bad way, just simply a fact that different people have different life experiences, and thus will see things different ways.

If somebody used it in a demeaning way, yes. But if somebody said “the boys are getting up to some monkey business”, the phrase doesn’t mean different things if the boys are white, the boys are black, or the boys are a mix of blacks and whites.

The world is a complicated enough place without having to walk on egg shells regarding our language. I suspect if somebody is insulting you, you’d know it without having to parse their words. We’re they angry, demeaning, condescending, etc.?  Using idioms that are in some cases hundreds of years old with no context related to African Americans isn’t a sign of racism to me.

Frankly, I’m sick of all the special rules in society about what you can and can’t say, based solely on one’s identifying characteristics. The only thing that should matter is intent.

If DeSantis isn't racist, then he's stupid. Either way, he doesn't deserve to get elected. But....there will definitely be a unhealthy portion of voters in Florida that will love this, which is sad.

Roy - did you click on that link I posted at all?

Desantis HAS TO know - regardless of intent - how that word is connected - unfortunately - with African Americans.

And as for your last sentence - when WE - as a society - start to NOT CARE about what we say then we are on the descent.

We are getting there.

I'm not giving up hope, though.

He's not stupid, either.  It's a common phrase.  He just didn't stop to think about those he could pretend offend before he spoke.

Next media firestorm:  GOP candidate says socialism is "gumming up the works", offends teething babies and elderly without teeth.

Personally, I tend to think intent is more important than perception, and just because you perceive something one way doesn't make you justified in saying someone is wrong when that was not their intention.

But I understand other people feel perception is more important than intent. It's a fair opinion, I just don't agree with it.
