Until today I had no clue there was a poem format called a "rondeau", it's ancient but simple. Fifteen lines in three stanzas, ten syllables each line except the two refrains.
A-A-B-B-A
then A-A-B-(refrain from 1st 4 words of poem)
then A-A-B-B-A-(same refrain)
Here's what I threw together just now for Rondo's return...
Rondo was here last month, his captain's chair
Holds none now but flashbacks both plain and rare:
When wins were trebled by a tenth rebound;
Slim leads secured by diving to the ground;
One-handed victory, no arm to spare;
Key buckets sank, left open on a dare;
Pressed for bitten sound -- blunt truth returned [glare]
(We fans presume to know how tightly wound
Rondo was here);
Best we saw since Bird to artfully share --
Breath, like passing foes, stolen by his flare --
Dream fake, no look, spin, scoop, oop, wraparound --
And in a pinch assigned LeBron to hound --
When TV's ladder had an extra stair...
Rondo was here.
Anyone inclined to be poetical and whatnot should try it, it's fun.
