I just don't get how there's any heat to this rumor.

Why does Sacto essentially give away a talent like Martin for payroll relief? He's worth much more than that.

because their owners are flirting with bankruptcy

Really? The guys who own the Palms Resort in Vegas are nearly bankrupt? Somehow, I think that's not quite true.

there's a reason why they blew up their team halfway through last season...they are losing tons of money.  there's been talk of moving the team to a different city for quite some time now.  very few people go to watch the Kings and they are a perennially awful team.

they'll do anything just to save some money.  it shouldn't be surprising that they'd give away young talent for a chance to get out of paying future salary.  washington just did essentially the same thing.

That's a list of all trades and signings the Kings have made since July 1, 2008. Not one of them screams out "salary dump" or "fire sale".

I hear what you're saying about attendance and arena concerns, but there's no evidence to suggest that the Maloofs are willing to cripple the long-term prospects of the club to save money.

They may look to use Martin to unload a long-term contract, but I don't see how they won't also look to get some young, cheap talent or first round picks while they do.
