Game Notes

This is the second of 4 meetings between these two division rivals.  The Nets came out ahead in the first game 102-97 at the new Barclays Center, ending the Celtics 3 game win streak. Rondo was out for that game with a sprained ankle.  These two teams split a pair of preseason games with the Nets winning  97-96 at the Garden and the Celtics winning 115-85 in their very first ever trip to the Barclays Center.

The Nets are in first place in the Atlantic division and in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference, 1 game behind Miami.  This is the latest in the season that the Nets have been in first place in the Atlantic Division since 1/30/2007 when they were 22-23 and in first place.   The Celtics are in 4th place in the division and in 7th place in the Conference, 2.5 games behind Miami.

The Nets have won 3 in a row, all of which were at home.   They have struggled on the road, however, with a 2-3 record away from the Barclays Center.  Their two wins came against the Magic and Kings and their losses were against The Warriors, Heat, and Lakers.  The Celtics are 4-3 at home and need to make a concerted effort to make the Garden a place teams don't want to come to.

The Nets are coming off an emotional overtime win at home over the Knicks in the battle for New York.  The Celtics are also coming off an overtime win as the beat the Magic on the road.   One of the stories of this game will be Rondo's assist numbers.  If he records 10+ assists in this game, he will be in sole possession of 2nd place, passing John Stockton for the most consecutive games with double digit assists.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3929.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Deron Williams
Rondo loves playing against the other top PG's in the league.   Rondo missed the first meeting between these two teams and Williams led the Nets with 24 points.   Look for Rondo to pass early and often as he looks to keep his assist streak going.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3333.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3520.jpg)
Jason Terry vs Joe Johnson
In the first meeting between these two teams, Johnson was 6-17 from the field for 19 points and he hit two huge shots down the stretch to give the Nets the win.  JET will have to pick up his defensive intensity to keep Johnson from going off in this game.  At the same time, the Celtics will need Jason to find his shot and contribute on the offensive end as well.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Brook Lopez
Lopez has been playing very well, averaging 19.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game.  In the first meeting between these two teams he went off for 10 points in the first quarter, getting the Nets off to a quick start.  He finished with 24 points.   This would be a good time for Jason Collins to see some time to defend Lopez if he starts to go off again in this game.  Darko would be nice, but that bridge has been burned.

Keys to the Game

Defense - The Celtics need to continue to tighten up their defense, especially in transition and on the pick and roll. Tuesday's practice was all about defending the pick and roll. The Nets have been tough on defense, holding teams to 91 points per game (1st in the league)  The Celtics are 22nd, allowing 100.1 points per game.  The Celtics have to tighten up their defense as it is their defense that is going to set them apart from the rest of the league.

Bench Play - The Celtics need their reserves to continue to find their chemistry and to produce.  The reserves have been big in the past two games but the Nets second unit has been outscoring their counterparts by 10.1 points per game.  The Celtics reserves must contribute on both ends of the court if they want to win this game.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards in order to limit New Jersey's fast break points and second chance points.  Bot Reggie Evans and Brook Lopez have been big on the boards this season.  The Celtics are still last in the league in rebounding, but they came up big against the Magic, behind Sully and Bass.  We need to see a strong effort from every player on the team.  When they put out the effort to win the battle of the boards, that often translates to the rest of their game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers.  They have to be aggressive on defense and in going after rebounds and loose balls.  The more aggressive team will usually get to the line more and will more often than not get the win.
X-Factor
Home Court
The Celtics are playing at home where they have vowed to make it difficult for other teams to play.  The Nets have struggled on the road this season, especially against the better teams.  The Celtics need to take advantage of this and come out strong and play hard for 48 minutes with the crowd behind them.

One month, 14 games. How ever you want to slice it, we are cloing in on the first 20 and some signs of consistency would be ...desirable. On that we can agree.

Nets have played inspired ball.  They have swallowed the C's on defense, owned the boards, been aggressive offensively and have hit 60% from 3.  C's ineptitude is in part due to playing a team that is better right now.

worst case scenario: Rondo is suspended for 10 games and the team goes to hell in a handbasket for the rest of the year

In all honesty, this is all Rondo's mistake.
Humphries made a hard foul, but it's nonsense of him to interrupt an incident going between other players.

And Gerald Wallace, too.

Watching the game on the YES network (the Nets station), and before the first replay of the fight the announcers were ripping Garnett.  Saying things like when the Nets were struggling the last few years Garnett had no problem being a bully to the Nets, now that they're good he has to resort to fighting.

Or something like that.  But ya they were ripping Garnett about him being a bully like it was all Garnett's fault.

In terms of the actual game -- huge play not gtting the steal on the other end and Evans hitting the buzzer beater. C's actually could have brought this game back to 10 by half-time.  But not to be.

Rondo is a leader. People want to say he doesn't do the things that will help your team win games, we're going to win this game and it's going to be because of Rondo stepping up right there.

Don't be surprised if we look back at this moment in two months and pinpoint it as the moment everything for us started to turn around.

and while rondo didn't need to get into it that much it was really humphries retaliation against rondo that escalated the whole thing

I really dont think Rondo will get suspended 5games...he pushed Humphries, then humphries grabbed him and started pulling him towards him.

had Humphries just pushed him back and they got in eachothers face it wouldve just been a double technical.

Rondo started it, yes...but Humphries is the one who escalated it.

I am all for us standing up for our teammates, but Rondo lost his cool and it hurts the team.  I don't like Humphries, but I didn't see the his foul on KG as that bad.  Hard foul, but it didn't look like he went for his head like others are saying.

We need Rajon to be in the game.  He needs to realize he is too valuable to us to pull stuff like this.  Go help your team mate up like we always do, drop some f-bombs in humphries face, but don't start something physical that gets you ejected.

What a way to end the streak.

I have mixed emotions about this. Should Rondo as the team leader keep out of this or be in front as he was?

Rondo needs to be cool enough to consider, that this could develop into something worse, like a bench-clearing brawl.
On the other hand this team has not shown a lot of toughness, and it's about time, that we did.

Only shoves, but some pretty aggressive, repeated shoving.  Rondo also pretty obviously started it.  Rondo made sure that turned into a fight, not just a scuffle.  He's got a history of being hot-headed in games.  I think he's gone for at least 3, probably more.  The league does not tolerate fighting, especially fighting that spills into the stands.  They're very sensitive about that stuff.

Disgusting.  That's how I'd describe the first half.

I am with the crowd that says Rondo needs to stand up for KG, but don't start a fight.  I mean, getting up in Humphries face gets you a tech, but at least you can still play.  Really sad to see the streak end in that fashion.

Gerald Wallace needs to be severely punished.  He just assaulted KG out of nowhere.  In my opinion, he needs a worse suspension than Rondo.  As for Rajon, I'm thinking 2, maybe 3 games.

We played very poorly, but I think we come out strong the second half.  This is the kind of moment where teams come together, and I'll bet there's going to be a whole lot of chippyness between our vets and Brooklyn's.

LET'S GO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!

So can we put the whole "Rondo only cares about the streak" thing to rest now?  His teammate got hit in the face, Rondo got mean, and as others in this thread have said, sort of Larry Birdish.  Rondo knew what he was doing and streak or not, he wasn't going to let that stand.  If you want to blame anyone, blame the refs for letting it get out of hand by not calling anything on anyone wearing a black jersey for nearly a whole half of basketball.

Sorry to the naysayers - but I love the fact that our point guard just went after a guy way bigger than him.  That's my freakin boy.  Immature?  I don't care.  We need to get tougher, and if you have to take a few swings and suspensions to get that going, then so be it.

Hopefully Rondo's ejection and subsequent fine / suspension will get this team fired up.  Hopefully being embarrassed by a division rival at home will help do the same.

But I'm worried about where this team could be after a few games without Rondo, especially with how inconsistent they've been with him in the lineup and playing well.

Rondo did the right thing.  You can't let guys punk your guys and get away with it.  We're losing by 20.  You need to make a statement that you're not going to roll over.

Go follow womans basketball.  This is a mans sport.  You do not let your teammates take shots to the head while in the air go unpunished.

Rondo went up against a guy 8 inches and 100 pounds bigger than him and destroyed him.

People who are going to gripe about Rondo doing this are the same that praise Bird for going to war for his teammates and laying it all on the line.  You can't have it both ways.

Rondo has the same mentality as Bird.  I will take that any day.

The woman comment is unecessary (and ridiculous if the implication is that men are tougher than women because they fight), but I have no problem with what Rondo did tonight.  Hit didn't punch him in the face, he pushed him following Humphries getting in KG's face.  It wasn't tough or macho -- it was fiery and emotional -- and I think it got the team energized.  I am psyched for the 2nd half.

Just caught up on DVR.  The seeds of that "fight" were sown by the refs.  Wildly inconsistent treatment of contact, and not just in Brooklyn's favor.  A lot of guys got clubbed with no whistle, then a soft one would be called the next time down.  That's a recipe for contact getting out of hand and players lashing out.

I don't mind Rondo for doing it, to be honest.  Stupid in the short term, of course, but that old fire is exactly what we've lacked lately.   Plus it was a glorified shoving match and nobody got hurt.  If it finally wakes the team up for the night or for the season I'm for it.

Rondo is a leader. People want to say he doesn't do the things that will help your team win games, we're going to win this game and it's going to be because of Rondo stepping up right there.

Don't be surprised if we look back at this moment in two months and pinpoint it as the moment everything for us started to turn around.

Put me on Team Rondo.

Felger will talk about how this means he's not a leader. This is why I listen to Pandora on my commute.

Donny Marshall also needs an assumdectomy, but that's hardly news at this point.

Wow. Another reason why I'm scared that Rondo is our main offensive option.

KEEP. YOUR. COOL. I know Humphries started it but take it out on the scoreboard!

But hey atleast the streak is over and Rondo can now focus on playing the game the way team wants him too.

Naw, Pierce is
Celtics just need to have Lee and Barbosa just have to bring the ball up and set the offense

Were you not watching what I was watching?! The Nets forced easy turnovers when those two were in the game!!

Rondo will be punished for this for sure. Players in the stands make the front office go all crazy.

I wish Rondo had handled it better, but I also know from his angle, it had to look like KG was thrown to the court. Given that, I don't blame him for stepping up. The fact it degenerated into the brawl is just what happens when tempers flare. Uncool, lack of discipline, but I can understand it.

Hopefully Doc can use this to kick these guys in the backsides and get some of the anger directed to playing better.

I don't understand all the people saying 'this is a man's game' and applauding rondo for getting tossed.  I mean do we not agree that we are a better team with Rondo in the lineup? We need every win we can get with this poor start, and getting ejected and potentially suspended for a couple games just will make it worse.

Rondo has the skill and ability to just take it out on the nets and Humphries and just embarrass them on the court.  I would much rather he do that and help us win.

Not that I want to lose, but history suggests this isn't true.

Rondo out is a short-term loss on paper, but if this fires the team up it's a long-term win, and maybe even a win tonight.

I gotta say, to this point in the season, I can't write it off anymore . . .

Lee and  Terry have been really disappointing, all things considered.  Both have played well below the level they were at just last season.

At least with Green there's the excuse that he hasn't played in a year.  Lee is obviously trying, but he can't seem to do anything offensively.  Terry doesn't bring any rebounding or defense to the table, and only in a handful of games has he really given us the scoring punch we expected from him.

He stood up for his teammate after an excessive foul.  I thought his reaction was a tad too much, but I appreciate the idea and the spirit.

We can't cut into the lead because Lee can't guard Johnson.  What happened to Lee supposedly being able to guard 2s and 3s?  We have to double Johnson which is leaving wide open shooters.  He also can't hit Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline..  Worthless.

That and we can't hit anything and they're hitting everything.

Just a horrible game all around.

And Green has been apparently benched.  Good riddance.

Shocking to see who comes down on Rondo for that. The kind of thing people love in most players gets criticized in Rondo. Cheers to Rondo. Cause standing up for your teammates is just the worst!

And 0 games. For a shove? He got ejected. He isn't being suspended.

I'd cut people a little slack.  Much like the 'fight,' it was heat of the moment, and people were reacting to the situation immediately.

Eh, the predictable people said predictable things. My fault for coming back around these parts to see the reaction. Back to staying away for me. Forget how pleasurable the NBA could be without so much naysaying. Ok, I;m a jerk, but still.

You should stay.  I know there are some people here who aren't as optimistic or positive as others, but their actions shouldn't keep you from posting.  If you don't appreciate another's comments, just ignore it.

I think the most important thing with forums (and blogs, for that matter) is learning to stick with you.  By that I mean you shouldn't feel discouraged from posting because somebody else doesn't have the same opinion.  Just be you, talk to people like you, and your experience will be much better.

Here's a TP!

The players have shown they have talent -- just not as this collective unit.  Is it on Danny for not getting a better mix of players?  Is it on Doc for not getting this roster playing as a team?  is it on the players for suddenly not producing this year?

I don't think you can blame Danny, because on paper most people agreed that the team had what it took to win a lot of games.

I can't help wanting to question Doc a bit here.  He's got a resume that deflects criticism, but his inability so far to get the new guys to play well in the system, and more importantly, to get his team as a whole playing low-mistake team basketball, is an indictment of the job he's done so far.

those last 2 plays pretty much demonstrate the inconsistency of officiating by these refs tonight.

Tonight?
just as a small sample for tonight.  they've stunk all night but those 2 consecutive plays pretty much put the officiating bias on full display

Let's give a lot of credit to the Nets tonight.  They came to the Garden prepared to play tough, physical, swarming defense and they've made some big shots and moved the ball pretty well while frustrating the Celtics at every turn.  In a word, they've beaten the Celtics at their own game.

He took a shot at KGs head while he was in the air.  That's a flagrant.

Clearly you haven't read the NBA official rule book.

Page 257, Paragraph 3 and 4:

"If a player is fouled with uneccessary force or in a way which is considered dangerous, the foul will be called a flagrant, except when the player who is fouled is a member of the Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics players do not qualify for flagrant fouls.  If a Boston Celtics player is fouled in a way which is deemed flagrant, he will be charged with a technical foul or ejected, subject to the mood of the official at the time of the call.

As sad as it is this has happened before. For example, the last time they played the Nets I think Keith Bogans didn't get called for a flagrant to Barbosa yet Rondo did for something similar to Wade.

As badly as they played tonight and I will not excuse that at all, I promise someone somewhere needs to speak out about the lack of respect the Celtics seem to get from the refs.
I don't understand how a team with a top 3 pointguard (maybe the best I guess it depends on your opinion) who's actually popular and is in the top 10 in jersey sales, one of the best PF's and players to ever play the game, another HOF player, one of the most respected coaches who's praised by players retired and playing, and a team with such a storied franchise with 17 banners (the most out of any team period) can not seem to get any respect at all not even in their homecourt.

As they say its all about the matchups. Many nights in nba the teams with most matchup advantages wins. None of which favored the Celtics against the Nets. Not even the point guard one. Brilliant tact by Nets putting bigger Joe Johnson on Rondo thus neutralizing him. I would loved to see this  lineup tonight.

Rondo
Green
Pierce
Garnett
Darko  :'( :'( :'(

Still I can't see Nets beating the Celtics in a 7 game series. By then all the wrinkles will be ironed out
