Rotoworld.com:

Kevin Garnett has been named Defensive Player of the Year for 2007-2008.
KG helped spark an historic win/loss turnaround, anchoring what quickly became one of the league's premier defenses. More information should be available soon, but it was probably a close vote between KG, Marcus Camby and Shane Battier.

Do you reckon this clinches KG not getting the MVP?

Congrats to KG.  Well deserved.
Yup

Unfortunately, KG wasn't winning MVP this year anyway. Only question is whether he'll finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Kobe is clearly going to win, I just hope KG sneaks into second above Paul, although I doubt it. As great as Lebron has been, KG should take 3rd over him.

DPOY should have been no contest. To me, Battier and Duncan and maybe Camby were the only legitimate competition, but given how much he did for this team, it would have been a joke for anybody else to win.
Go Celtics.

Now that I look at the voting, who were the seven jackholes who put KG third? That's ridiculous. This voting process is just plain dumb. It's as bad as anybody saying Manu wasn't the Sixth Man of the Year. At least I respect that vote, though, because that voter basically said Manu shouldn't qualify because he's not a real Sixth Man (Manu got 123 first place votes and was kept off the 124th ballot entirely). Had he voted Manu 2nd or 3rd, that would be the ridiculous call. He was clearly either the best Sixth Man in the league or not a sixth man.
Go Celtics.

Congrats to the Ticket. It's going to make a great bookend holding up the finals MVP.

Awesome job, Ticket ... man, you look good in green! This award was won in the trenches of the low-post, and by the tenacity of a tiger ... balanced on all fours and ready to pounce. Much deserved, well-earned, and excellently chosen ... I'm just a bit troubled, however, that this may mean he has little chance at the MVP ... let's hope that's NOT the case. Congrats, Kevin!

I am very happy that he won the DPoY.  It's quite an accomplishment...the award has become something of a "specialists" award in recent years, with mainly players like Ben Wallace, Camby, Mutombo, and Rodman that focus the vast majority of their energy on defense winning it.  KG joins a very small group of players like Jordan, D. Robinson, Hakeem, and Mourning as legitimate 2-way players to win this.  Kudos.

It is ironic that him winning this is probably a death knell to him winning MVP, when in a logical world this would have actually strengthened an MVP campaign.  But I think the extreme likelihood that Kobe is winning MVP has already numbed me to that outcome, and I'm free to just be happy that KG has added another pretty rare accomplishment to the coffers.  And his DPoY award is really a team honor, which is also cool.
