500 Greatest Movies of All Time

In my opinion, Empire is the best movie magazine/website around. Its reviews are more often than not spot on and they're so well written.

Anyway, they've compiled a list of the best 500 movies ever made and it got me thinking. Surprised to see the omission of certain films, although I can't argue with #1.

I've added a poll of the top 10 on this list, but which films do you think I've missed off the poll, and that Empire has missed off the list.

Ridiculous list...Magnolia on 89, Ferris Bueller on 88?? I mean, I like Ferris as much as the next guy, but cīmon....Fight Club in the top ten?? If the people who voted there are the creme of the crop in Hollywood, it is no wonder that movies became so forgettable. I remember a list of the "Rolling Stone Magazine" about the "500 best songs since you were born", and that was also a horrible collection...these lists are always useless.

Those are probably my favorite 6 movies, in alphabetical order. With more time to think about it, the list would probably change...

Godfather II is the best movie ever made. You shouldn't even consider them tow movies, they were both based off of the same book. Ideally you'd watch Godfather I and Godfather II in succession and burn Godfather 3. Then salt its ashes.

Reading that list just annoys me. "OldBoy"(#64) above "The Great Escape" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre", while "Crouching Tiger" is number like 499? disgusting.

EDIT: And Lawrence of Arabia is number 57 behind Casino Royal? What, were Catwoman and Electra both busy? Awful.

The issue here is distinguishing between best ever made and favorite.  I think that The Godfather is the best ever made, bu the Shawshank Redemption is my favorite on that list.  It's a tough distinction, but in the end I think it gets too clouded by personal feelings.

Any list that doesn't have a single Bertolucci, Bergman or Almodovar film in the top 100 isn't worth the pixels it's written on.  Bertolucci's "The Conformist" and Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" are certainly in my top ten, and Almodovar's "La Mala Education" is certainly in my top 100.

10,000 readers submitted votes, which were apparently given some weight.  That's why that list is pretty ridiculous, I have to say.  For instance, I love Star Wars, but how is Return of the Jedi #91?  How is "School of Rock" ahead of "It's a Wonderful Life"?  Just plain silliness.

Simply a ridiculous list.

Fight Club shouldn't be in the top 100 never mind the top 10. It's a good movie but it's ranking alone removes any credibility from this endeavor.

Blade Runner is only one spot worse than quite possibly, the film regarded by many, many critics as the best film ever made The Godfather Part II? Puhleease!!!

That Gone With the Wind didn't make the top 30 films and  Aliens did is embarrassing and a joke.

Evil Dead 2 is a top 50 movie of all time and yet I'm still scanning down trying to find what is easily one of the 10 greatest films of all time in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I'm almost speechless.

So I've made it threw the top 100 and still haven't found The Wizard of Oz, The Ten Commandments, Patton, Blazing Saddles, Titanic, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Crash, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Platoon, Planet of the Apes, or even one original, old-time monster movie like King Kong, Godzilla, Dracula, or Frankenstein.

And Brickowski is right, where is The Conformist, simply one of the greatest films ever made?

It is controversial though, some good discussion going on, although mainly venting. And rightly so. Other than The Godfather, I disagree with the whole top 5. and probably the whole top 10. No Return of the King?

It seems like a list where they wanted to try to combine the "great" movies with some more modern/influential/popular movies, in part to appease the common reader but also so they don't come off as elitists or film snobs. 

Unfortunately, if you are going for a "greatest" list you need to be a little bit of a film snob, I guess.  If you want an example of what the general public is into look go to Rotten Tomatoes and look at the crap that is under the Top DVD Rentals for the week.

Fight Club is the prime example I think...good movie? Yeah. Top 10 EVER?  I don't think so...

But Apocalypse now was in the Top 10 so I am happy!
