This will be interesting.  Sounds like his only coaching experience is AAU and high school level.

This had been rumored for awhile because Penny coaches (between high school and AAU) 3 of the best high school players in the country all from the Memphis area and none of which was considering attending Memphis.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Good players do not always make good coaches, still he was a PG at times and I think that helps a great deal.

I don't know. Magic would get angry with his players because they didn't see plays developing on the court the way he did (and it was Van Exel that was on the tail end of that, not some noname scrub).

It should help in recruiting, I'm guessing high schoolers would be more inclined to choose Memphis if they have a coach like Penny Hardaway. I know he's been around some really good players in AAU
CB Mock Deadline - Minnesota Timberwolves
Kemba Walker / Tyus Jones / Aaron Brooks
Jimmy Butler / Jamal Crawford / Treveon Graham
Rodney Hood / Nic Batum / Marcus Georges Hunt
Taj Gibson / Nemanja Bjelica / Jonas Jerebko
KAT / Derrick Favors / Cole Aldrich
Picks - 2018 CHA 1st (Lotto protected), none out

St John’s Georgetown and Memphis all in the 1985 final four and all being coached by their best alum.
