Just wanted to broach the topic of Jrue Holiday’s long term future with the Celtics.

Holiday currently has a player option for next season worth 39.4 million. Given he’s 33 going on 34 years old, he may prefer long term security, declining the option for free agency.

Do you believe Holiday will take a discount to stay a Celtic long term or will he want a max deal?

I don't think he'll decline his player option because I don't think he'll get as much if he hits free agency, simply because of his age - who is going to give Holiday a long-term contract that competes with just claiming his player option?
Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time.

But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.

Given that there’s 40M on the table for one year, I’m not sure what an acceptable long-term number would be.  Would he take a 3-year 75M contract - in so doing effectively cutting 15M off of year one?  Might be worth it for the assurance of an additional 35M.  Would the Cs want to invest 25M in a 37 yo Holiday when they have JT and DW to take care of atop JB and KP?  200M for 5 players.

I completely agree with you in regards to his player option value, but Holiday may decline it for more overall compensation.

If Holiday believes he’s physically declining, picking up that option may lose him significant money on his next contract.

This.

Ideally, Celtics win the title this season.  Holiday realizes he's part of something special here and sticks around here thru his twilight.

I'd like to think Holiday, who has made over 300M in his career already, would take a discount to stay here similar to Horford. Like others have said, maybe tack on a few extra years to that player option in 2025 and make it something between 3 years, 70-80M (23-27M AAV range all together). Would be good for all parties IMO especially if Holiday loves it here + wants to contend for a handful of years to come.

I'm hoping he'll take around 3 years, $75m - $80m.

That values him at two years @ between $17.5m - $20m after next season.  That may be on the high side?

It would be good if it was a descending contract like 26, 23, 19...

it'd actually just be better to be 39.4 next year and then 18 the 2 after that

Yes. Needs to be small as possible when Tatum and White are on new contracts, which is not next year.

Could we do 4 years of he declines the option? 100 mil total 27, 24, 21, 18?

What if the Celtics told him to decline and take a 4-year, $100 million deal? Sure, he'd be giving up $15 million initially, but he's essentially getting that and then some back at the end.

That's what I see happening – a Paul Pierce-style option decline for a longer-term contract.
