The Knicks also signed all those bonehead contracts to 3 and 3 years length. I’m sure they have options and can maneuver but the last report had them lined up for cap space in 2021 because they saw nothing out of next years class.

No, the Knicks aren’t that bad off.  The only free agent they signed this summer that is guaranteed next summer is Julius Randle.  All their other summer signings either expire (Morris), have a team option (Portis), or a small guarantee (Gibson, Payton, Ellington, and Bullock).  They will have no trouble creating max room next summer, and limited trouble creating double max room.
