Hakeem played three years in College here we had a chance to see what Hakeem could do. The reason for concern is you do not have enough data on foreign players.
Embiid is more akin to Michael Olowokandi... We have not seen his work product.
Caveat Emptor.
To my knowledge Embiid has played just as much in American college as Wiggins has. How does it make any difference which country he was born in?
My question is this. If you believe that drafting an international player is a bad idea, and you agree that Boston needs a big man / rim protector, which big man would YOU choose instead?
Personally I really like Vonleh, but if Boston lands top 3 in the draft order, it would be kinda hard for me to take Vonleh over Embiid.
After those two guys, there is really nobody else in the draft who will be a legit impact center. Nobody.
I do have my concerns about Embiid, but my concerns have nothing to do with his country of origin...and everything to do with his back injury, his lack of experience, and his poor basketball IQ. Still, if you look at other top prospects none of them is a sure thing:
* Wiggins is very raw and could become another Jeff Green
* Parker is an average athlete and a poor defender who struggles to score against height
* Exum is international and has never played for a US college team
* Randle has a limited offensive skill set, so-so defensive IQ
* Smart lacks a consistent jumper, lacks ball handling skills and is not an elite athlete
* Gordon will likely have zero offensive impact in the league and is a tweener
* Vonleh has limited BBIQ and so-so passing/hands
Nobody in this draft is without fault. There are guys who will contribute from the get-go but have limited upside (Parker, Randle, Smart) and there are guys who have tons of potential but are a little raw (Embiid, Wiggins, Exum). Any draft is always a gamble.
