  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
Throughout the season, Celtics fans have been complaining a lot about interior scoring.

The fact of the matter is he's 7 feet tall and he can score. Rondo will love to play with him - he runs the floor well.

I'm thinking a taller Luis Scola.

Even if he is a solid player...there was no reason to TRADE UP to get him.

Ainge is really Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing things up today.

Unless he thought that the Jazz/Bucks were gonna draft him...

If not, then I'd guess that the picks are going to be heavily protected.

I think that Olynyk was the BPA at the time.

Thank you I don't hate this pick. I think he could develop into a very good center. There's no way to know so why complain right now?

I like it as well.

Not everyday you can see a very polished low post scorer in this age of the NBA. Shoots good in midrange so he's a pick and pop threat. Runs the floor well too. He's another scoring threat if he pans out. He does not offer a lot defensively but hey, if he does he's the number 1 pick. He does need to work on his rebounding though. He has a ceiling of Zydrunas Ilgauskas IMO and that's not bad considering that this draft is supposed to be "weak".

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4705720/rapid-reaction-cs-move-up-to-get-olynyk

The Boston Celtics shuffled up to No. 13 to grab Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk after a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Boston sent its No. 16 pick and two future second-round draft picks to the Mavericks to move up.

Olynyk averaged 17.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks over 26.4 minutes per game during his junior season at Gonzaga. But it's his advanced metrics that really raised eyebrows. According to Synergy Sports data, Olynyk averaged 1.131 points per play, ranking in the 95th percentile among all Division 1 players. A whopping 21.6 percent of his plays came in the post and he averaged 1.067 points per play (93rd percentile). For a Boston team that craves size and scoring ability, Olynyk appears to fit a need (regardless of how the roster looks next season). His 36.57 Player Efficiency Rating (PER) led the nation this past season.

It's on the defensive end where he'll need a Celtics immersement. Olynyk allowed 0.818 points per play and ranked merely in the 54th percentile. Opponents took advantage of his lack of strength in the post and he needs to be a better rebounder.

The Celtics selected Brazilian center Lucas Nogueira for the Mavericks, who were expected to send him on to Atlanta in a separate trade.

The ESPN Insider breakdown on Olynyk's strengths and weaknesses:

    Positives
    * Big man with versatile game
    * Can score with his back to the basket
    * Solid perimeter game with 3-point range
    * Very efficient scorer
    * Good motor, especially on the offensive end

    Negatives
    * Needs to add strength/toughness
    * Mediocre rebounder/shot-blocker
    * Can be turnover prone

I had him maybe 5th on my list to take  AT 16.....thought Dieng or PlumLee was a safer bet.  Oh Well ....... this team will be one of the worst 5 teams in the NBA without KG and Pierce and Rondo hurt.

I'm happy didn't pick Larkin or Shazbuss though .   One short and other looks criminal  ;D

He's been linked with the Mavs.  I'm sure they were going to take him.

I like this pick too. I was real nervous there were going to pick Shabazz. Good solid interior offense, just what the C's need. I also don't think he was going to be there at 16.

Count me in.

Makes me wonder why Dieng's stock drop too low.

I guess Danny smelled other teams wanting take Olynyk before us and had to do something to get him.

Always nice to read a logical post. Thank you! I LOVE this pick. Celts needed size big time. In my opinion, you can't have enough scoring bigs on your team.

olynyk is not my preferred choice, but he is not a bad choice at all. he is supposedly among the very best, if not the best, offensive player in the draft. at defense he merely mediocre and not good a rebounding.

but let's put olynyk in a team context. what will it mean to the celtics to have an efficient scoring center. he can score close the basket and from near the three point line. boston suddenly has some offense and i can only imagine him playing with rondo and working off the pick and roll.

this give options to coaches to pull opposing centers away from the basket so green and sully can attack the basket.

also, if olynyk pulls opposing centers away from the basket, it opens up opportunities for sully to rebound and score as well. in the videos he looked very talented on offense.

this kid will score. now, how to teach him to play better defense and box out? that is the challenge for the new coach.

all in all, i think olynyk will be an excellent 6th man when the celtics build another playoff team.

or, he will be a good trade chip since 7 footers who can score are very, very rare in the nba.

good draft by danny so far.
