We just lost one of the all time greats in Paul Newman.

I, personally, have to go with "The Sting", winner of seven oscars, including Besst Picture.

What an awsome movie and theme.

"There's sharks and minnows in this world. If you don't know which you are, you ain't a shark."

My #1 of all time would have to be The Usual Suspects.  The Godfather films bore me, they are paced too slowly.  I consider myself a real cinema snob and I have never understood the near universal acceptance of the Godfather II as the "greatest" movie of all time.

I know what you mean, I`ve experienced this nearly universal acceptance as well. I liked the first one, although I wouldn´t put it in my top 10...or top 50, for that matter. And it´s definitly because of the pace, as you said. But I found the second one to be incredibly boring. Just because a movie has DeNiro and Pacino in it doesn´t make it great.

The Usual Suspects is another movie I did not like. The Twist in the end was forseeable, imo, the story didn´t catch me, neither did the overall mood of the movie. It´s funny that you mentioned this movie, because Godfather II and "The Usual Suspects" go head-to-head for first place of my personal "overrated"-list.

I definitely think The Usual Suspects is a little too popular for it's own good.  But, fully knowing the ending (which I admit I did NOT foresee when I first viewed the film) I still enjoy the acting and crafting of the movie.

It's definitely not a clear-cut #1 for me, but it's definitely in my top 10.

Well, my top 10 would be

1. Citizen Kane
2. Gone with the Wind
3. The Conformist
4. The Seventh Seal
5. The Seven Samurai
6. The African Queen
7. Sophie's Choice
8. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (better than Episode I)
9. Lawrence of Arabia
10. Annie Hall

Some movies that made the top 500 list but should be ranked much, much higher are:

The Big Red One (thematically, a better war movie than Saving Private Ryan. Samuel Fuller's best film)
To Have and Have Not (the best Bogie and Bacall)
The English Patient (great performances all around)
Rashomon (Kurosawa classic that has to be in the top 25)
The Maltese Falcon (has to be in the top 25.  Maybe John Huston's best film)
Paths of Glory (Kubrick masterpice. Top 25. Beresford's Breaker Morant was essentially a remake)
Bridge on the River Kwai (top 25)
Fitzcarraldo (personal fave. top 25)
The Wild Bunch (Most influential western ever made, and perhaps the best. Top 15)
Forrest Gump (Top 25)

Great movies that did not make the list (stupidly)

High Sierra (Bogie and the immensely talented Ida Lupino)
Body Heat (The film that launched both William Hurt and kathleen Turner.)
Only Angels Have Wings (one of Howard Hawks' best.  How could they leave this one off but include Rio Bravo?)
Lady From Shanghai (One of Welles' best.  Better than Touch of Evil. Last chase scene in the house of mirrors is a classic.  Filmmaker's film)
Minnie and Moskowitz (Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes at their best)
The Big Chill (Are You kidding?  I went through the list twice thinking I had missed it)
Bullworth (Ranks right after Network as great political satire)
Nashville (one of Robert Altman's best)
M.A.S.H. (Another one where I had to doublecheck.  How could it be left off? Did they have it in for Altman?)
Flight of the Phoenix (the original, with James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, et. al.  The remake was trash)
Betrayal (Pinter screenplay, fabulous performances by Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley. Glaring omission)
Breaker Morant (Beresford.  Superb cinematography)
The Dirty Dozen (Personal fave)
High Noon (You've got to be kidding me! Stanley Kramer's best film, great performances by Gary Cooper and others)
Wuthering Heights (the original with Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon)
King Lear (Paul Schofield's rendition.  Best Shakespeare ever fimed, although Richard Burton's Hamlet also deserves consideration)

(I won't even get into the omission of silent classics like Birth of a Nation or Nosferatu.)

Really BAD movies that made the top 500 list

V for Vendetta
300
Sin City
Rio Bravo (probably Howard Hawks' worst film.)
Night of the Living Dead
First Blood
The Leopard (slow moving and totally overrated)
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (No, Russ Meyer is not a good filmmaker)

8. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (better than Episode I)

Begin Star Wars Snobbery:

Well so is just about any episode of Bob the Builder.  ;) I'm assuming you  meant Episode IV?

End Star Wars Snobbery.

Ummmm, yes to the omission, no to either of those being better Brannaugh's Henry V. Or for that matter Olivier's Hamlet.

LOL, Yes, I meant the "first" Star Wars

And here are three more glaring omissions from the top "500":

Night and Fog (the most powerful documentary ever made)
Grand Illision
Belle de Jour

French films are genrally underrepresented on the list.

I like Burton's Hamlet better than Olivier's-- and Brannaugh's Hamlet too.  I liked Olivier's Henry V just as much as Brannaugh's.  I liked Olivier's Othello.  But Schofield's Lear tops them all IMHO.

Two other glaring omissions:

1. The Killing Fields

2. How could the list include Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis version)-- not a terrible film, but certainly a mediocre one--and omit Beresford's The Black Robe or Northwest Passage (with Spencer Tracy), both of which are vastly superior pieces of fimmaking covering the same general theme?

I think so too.  Also, if Superbad is on the list, Knocked Up should be as well.

I thought Knocked Up was a little better, although I enjoyed both.

Disagree, no amount of Ewan MacGregor could save that movies from Hayden. Also, the fight above Coruscant was a disappointment.
