He makes about 5M this year and has a player option for another 5M next year.
He's still putting up 13/9 in about 25 minutes a game, and even with all the drama that's going on in Washington, you have to give Howard credit for staying out of trouble and just doing his thing on the court this season.
But here's the thing, Horford (as much as I love him) has been extremely underwhelming so far, and Baynes has been okay for a rotational big but that's about it. And I don't think people realize how screwed we are if one of the two go down to injury for a decent amount of time. As much as we'd all love to see Robert Williams get playing time and to "get his feet wet" on the court... I don't think we realistically can expect him to be an impactful big for us, at least this season.
Anthony Davis is 100% not coming here this season (Rose Rule), and I'm not sure if there's really another center out there who could really help us via trade or in the buyout market. Meanwhile, Howard could be an underrated get.
I'm also real sick of us giving up rebounds in critical possessions LATE in the game (like we saw in the Hornets game too). I think Howard could help us in that regard, or at least be a much better help than Horford/Baynes currently.
And if Horford doesn't like it, then Ainge and the coaches should tell him he needs to do better on the court himself, period. It could be a low-risk and attainable acquisition for us (given his salary and contract situation too), and frankly although I'm not panicking, we ARE reaching that point where we might have to think outside the box a bit and maybe even look for help outside the organization.
Washington is having a fire sale, and obviously as we're seeing in the threads to the right, folks are making the case for Beal or Porter, but I'd argue Howard is the guy who makes sense given our needs and trade price/contract situation.
Sure, we absolutely can help ourselves out by shooting better, playing smarter as a team and easing Hayward into the starting lineup (in an ideal situation), but I do think we need help at the center position and our depth there is a lot thinner than most people realize.
SIDE NOTE: Howard does have a trade restriction so he can't be traded until after 12/15

Rozier, Brown, Baynes, Yabusele/Ojeleye for Beal and Howard.
You get a deadly backcourt duo of Irving and Beal. An interior presence in Howard is huge, getting rebounds and post-scoring. Slide Al Horford to the 4. Tatum takes the 3 and Hayward comes off the bench as a sixth man.
Basically Orlando Magic 2009 but far superior to it. I'll take Howard over Jeff Green any day of the week.

Not a bad idea but the salaries just don't match. You'd HAVE to trade Smart and his 11-12M to make it work (though in that case you'd also keep Rozier I imagine as long as the rest of the trade remains the same).

Would be interesting

sure why not :)

Rozier for Howard and 2nd rounders.

It's not crazy. Even a Rozier for Howard swap would be fine for me. Rozier's gone anyways this summer and frankly it just looks like he's playing for a new big contract next year. Howard would help us more this year IMHO. Meanwhile maybe WAS view Rozier as a building block piece for their future and temporary Beal/Wall guard replacement for at least this year.

I've always supported for Dwight's acquisition. He may not have the outside shooting that Stevens apparently requires on his players but he brings in interior presence. Rim protection is synonymous with Dwight defense. He's one guy who could make Lebron a jumpshooter.
Can Dwight strike off the restriction if he wants to be traded to us before Dec 15?

If he is healthy, I'd love to have him here.

Because every time Dwight Howard leaves a team, the entire organization celebrates. No way do I want that guy on my team.

I'd hate to depart Marcus Smart, but can we keep Terry Rozier if we have to leave Smart lol

After tonight, I'd pull the trigger on this quite happily. Try and bring back Larkin, or a Ramon Sessions type player, lol.

And he'll do even more wonders here in Boston ;D

I mean losing Smart AND Rozier does hurt out guard depth too in that case even with Beal coming back in the proposed trade.

Noooooooooooooooooo

Yeah I'm Saying It. Lets Trade For Dwight Howard (After 12/15)
well clearly the solution for a team with no chemistry the answer would be - trade for Dwight Howard....

Likewise, a team that is getting fairly limited production out of their bigs could get an upgrade from Howard. Otherwise you got to hope Williams can help and Horford starts playing better consistently ASAP.
-
Surely you jest.
-
He didn’t play until 11/2. Sore back, missed training camp preseason and first seven games fwiw
Slow start isn’t really his fault

I'm not on board with trading for Dwight, but if we are talking a ___+Brown+Rozier for Beal+Dwight package I think Horford would be the better option than Smart. Losing both Smart and Brown would be too detrimental to the Celtics' wing D, and a healthy Gordie should be able to fill Horford's role as an unselfish veteran presence who can be a secondary facilitator.

I can't see Danny shipping Horford out though
