Game Notes
The Celtics travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the Hornets tonight in their first of 4 games the two teams play against each other this year. Boston is coming off a terrible loss at home against the Utah Jazz, losing 98-86 in what was the Celtics' absolute worst offensive showing this season. Kyrie Irving, Al Horford and Brad Stevens all seemed to send strong messages to the rest of the team in interviews after the loss, hoping to settle and inspire the team. Stevens has noted that changes in the starting 5 are not likely as what's more important are the lineups during the game and at the end of the game not the first five minutes of the game. Perhaps that means changes to his rotational substitutions and groupings at different periods of the game but it doesn't look like a starting lineup shakeup is coming.

Charlotte has lost their last two games and are coming off a draining and emotional 122-119 OT loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, where Jimmy Butler hit a three pointer as time expired in the OT, as the Sixers overcame an NBA season high 60 points from Kemba Walker. The 60 points were also a career high for Walker.

Charlotte is a team that has played better than their record. Like Boston they take a lot of three point shots(34.5 per game), unfortunately, not at a great percentage(35.3%). Also like Boston, they take very good care of the basketball(12.9 per game, 2nd best in NBA). Where the teams are different is that the Hornets create a lot of points off turnovers and second chance opportunities off offensive rebounds. Because of this Charlotte has the 7th best offense in the league. Defensively, the Hornets are a pretty middle of the road defense and will be missing their best perimeter defender Michael Kidd-Gilchrist tonight.

Charlotte is led by Kimba Walker who is putting up MVP quality numbers and is the league's second leading scorer behind LeBron James putting up 28.7 points per game while also contributing 6.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds per game. Walker's backcourt mate is having his best year as a pro contributing 13.4 points, 1.3 steals and 4.5 rebounds per game. Much like Boston, the Hornets rely on gang rebounding as the do not have a dominant rebounding player on the team. Nicolas Batum leads active players with just 5.7 rebounds per game.

The keys for a Boston win will be more about improving how Boston plays than stoping what Charlotte does. The Celtics still have the best defense in the league and Charlotte really doesn't have any other offensive player that the Celtics have to worry about. Boston needs to make their free throws. The Celtics need to hit their wide open shots and layups. The Celtics have to drive the ball into the lane and create points there as the Hornets do not have the interior defense like Utah, Portland and Denver do which gave the Celtics such a hard time. This is a game that will feature the two best PGs in the Eastern Conference playing head to head. If they both play the exceptional ball they usually do, it will be up to the supporting crews to decide this game. Here is hoping Brown, Hayward, Horford, Tatum, Rozier and Smart can start hitting some shots and get themselves out of the early season shooting funk that they all seem to be in.

I hope the Celtics that played the Raptors show up tonight and not the Utah Jazz version. We are the 5 seed man - time to play as good as you think you are.

Feel like Kemba will score more, but Kyrie will get more assists and defensive numbers. Should be fun

I feel like Jaylen's the one that should have been benched, but I can see Stevens' logic in having Gordon run the 2nd unit rather than Terry. What will be interesting will be who will be on the floor at the end if it's a close game.

Hayward also pubicly said that he's okay coming off the bench recently, which may have played a role

I'm okay with either Brown or Hayward going to the bench. Adding Baynes gives better size and toughness, but not a guy that needs the ball.

I really like the move of Hayward coming off the bench.  I think there will be better chemistry to start and Hayward will do a much better job running the offense than Rozier.  It doesn't mean he will play fewer minutes or not be on the court at the end.

baynes and theis can block shots and rebound with more physicality than AL

i hope RW3 can get there soon also

i want him swatting shots away

Gah, Baynes' hands are my only complaint with him

I don't think his hands are bad, but he gets a lot of bail out passes that are unexpected and a bit low for a guy that size. He's good with passes that he expects and/or are a lot higher

You're not wrong, he just has a tendency to boggle passes out of shots, which frustrates me

All his shots have been fine except that stupid triple. Hate that it's gone from two 3pt attempts per-36 in the playoffs to five attempts per-36 this season. He's averaging more 3pt attempts per minute than Jayson Tatum is. So stupid

Dunk that, Hayward!

Dunk that, needs to be the new team motto....
Ha, it definitely does

The bench players should hold up signs "Dunk That" and "Attack the Rim".  They clearly need the reminders.

Not watching, but are we basically phasing out Rozier with this rotation?

He just came in, so I doubt it

Haven't been able to catch many first quarters, but Rozier's probably the first guy off the bench. Seems we're going with Smart and Hayward instead.

walker has 12 points in 12 minutes. he played the entire first quarter. once he sits i dont think charlotte will keep the lead.

celtics still cold from 3 point land, 2-7.

Much, much better flow to our offense so far tonight, despite all the unforced turnovers from our clumsiness.

They passed up a few layup opportunities, but overall, they look better tonight.

Bit scrappy but they are fighting. I was curious to see if they would show some professional pride in their performance so it’s good to see that fight at least even though the shots aren’t falling (again)

2 offensive put-backs for Charlotte.  Ugly.

Uniforms are not contrasting enough for me -- maybe HD it's better, but with my SD I am having trouble noticing which team is getting the boards.

NICE drive by Jaylen.  That's twice.

3's absolutely destroyed the lead in that stretch.  Absolutely no need for it.  C's are scoring when they drive.  Frustrating as CHarlotte also is pushing the ball off the missed 3's and C's caught 3 straight times not ready defensively -- off of missed 3's.   7-point lead; now down 2.  Frustrating.

We've taken 9 less 3's than they have and we've been driving to the rim too.  I recall at least two of Brown's layups where contact was made and could have been an and-1.

How can we only have 4 free throws through 3 quarters with all the paint play?
most of them have been clear drives to the basket with no contact

correct

Our rotating to the perimeter when they drive and kick out needs to be better. We’ve left a lot of shooters open at the 3 point line through poor rotating

You are seeing why though, they are just shooting 3's now

Now but in the 1st half they kept going into the paint and still got nothing....

They were almost all easy buckets in the 1st, dunks to Theis and Horford, open drives. I didnt see fouls.

Put on your green googles, man! ;D

but I DONT WANT TO

14 fouls on the C's
6 on the Hornets

I call BS on that.

IMO you are wrong. Its almost obvious by the last 4 minutes, 3's galore, while Charlotte going to basket and penetrating.

We've taken 9 less 3's than they have and we've been driving to the rim too.  I recall at least two of Brown's layups where contact was made and could have been an and-1.

Im watching the game, how are you going to tell me what I am seeing. Total 3's doesn't matter when you are just asking for fouls for nothing.

As I said, I didnt see any blatant non whistle calls. Both sides probably could have gotten 1 or 2 extra foul calls down low.

Right now Celtics are resorting to shooting 3's

When they drive aggressively, they build the lead.  When they settle for 3s, the lead dwindles.  Definite improvement from previous games though.

You're contradicting your own initial argument.  I pointed out that Charlotte had actually shot more 3's - significantly more - then you're saying total 3's don't matter.  Then you point out the C's are settling for 3's.  OK then.

It's rare in an NBA game for any team to foul more than twice the amount as their opposition.  A lot of fouls were cheap ones for Kemba Walker.

It's not the fact that it's blatant. It's the inconsistency of the officiating. Players take 3 step layups, and small guards get away with what Morris did because their steps are less conspicuous. Just bad officiating yet again.

I wouldn't mind seeing Brown instead of Hayward.  Brown was playing well.

Yeah, that's the funny part. It's the first game Brown plays well in a long while, yet he isn't even going to crack 20 minutes tonight.

Pretty much everything from the coaching staff has been disappointing this season. Complete failure on their end in everything from getting their guys prepared to play to rotations to in-game decision-making and play calling. Just a pitiful waste of talent out there because of a futile effort by the coaching staff.

one more loss and we are a.500 team....wow.

and all most all experts out there predicted we'd be leading the East easily.

what should have been a 15-4 team is currently 9-8...go figure this out Brad.

Your boy Hayward is trash and so is Average freaking Al.

And Brown has officially become Brad's dog poop.

6th seed here we come....

Between our starters, MM, and Hayward, we were 3 for 22 from 3.

Sadly it was our defense (give Walker credit) and awful rotations that cost us this game.

Brad left a lot to be desired tonight, jeesh.

Benching Kyrie killed our offence, and gave Charlotte all the momentum. Playing Hayward off the bench, then not running the offence through him and thus not getting him in any rhythm, and then playing him down the stretch when he was ice cold over Jaylen and Theis.

Many many blunders

When Brad pulled Kyrie in the 4th, that was game...

That and insisting on gimpy Hayward down the stretch instead of Brown when Brown actually showed some initiative and intensity today. There's like no logic or consistency with him.

When does Brad start getting murmurs about the hot seat? Seriously. NBA coaches are a dime a dozen. You don't get this type of stacked talent on one team all the time. If nice guy Brad isn't getting it done, we can't afford wasting this season with him not motivating players and making inexplicable rotation decisions costing us games. That's just asking Kyrie to leave next year.

People can think this is a hot take all they want, but it's unequivocally clear that the coaching staff has been a complete failure top to bottom this year, which is a major part of our struggles due to lack of preparation and inept in-game decision-making. Someone else can do the job if Brad can't, because it's looking more and more likely that Brad is more of a "maximizer" coach that can't actually manage this level of talent.

I'm not that upset about this loss.  I've come to terms with the fact that this team just isn't very good right now.

I think we'll be a force come playoff time.  Nobody is going to want to play us, I'll tell you that.  But I could not envision looking worse than we have so far this season.

We are a bad team with one good player right now.
If Kyrie is the best player on court we have a chance. So far in many games like today he was 2nd best.

I think that's a bit of an overreaction. We've overachieved and improved literally every season under Brad. Might want to wait more than a quarter of the season before we call for his job.

That being said, tonight he sucked majorly

Very much a winnable game - tossed away because the wrong guys were in their the final 6 minutes. Coach stubbornly sticks with Hayward who provided nothing helpful to the cause.   Crappy team defense.  It was pretty bad.

it might come from the celtics not making 3 pointers at their career rates. hayward is still MIA on offense. with either of those problems are removed the celtics could very well be sitting at 12-4 right now.

Yeah. This is a hot take.

Just because Brad isn't breaking chairs on the sideline, it doesn't mean he's not getting into his players. He's called this team out for settling for 2's, he's benched Tatum (for a quarter at least), he's called out their mental toughness, he's changed the starting lineup. At the end of the day, players have to execute. He can't secure rebounds for Al. He can't pull Rozier's head of his butt, he can't guard Kemba. At some point, there needs to be a players only meeting and guys have to step up.

I’m not that upset either Kemba had to score 43. Probably what Toronto felt when Kyrie scored 43 and stole the game from them.

After the first 10 games I concluded that it’s going to take months. We’re not going to be a no.1 seed but we will make the playoffs and this team looks like it needs the playoffs to motivate them. They got plenty to fix, including learning how to shoot again, but no point tearing your hair out. Just move on to the next game

Hayward with 30?

Bad coaching, my friend.  I'm sure me saying that will annoy a lot of people.  And as much as I like Brad, I really don't think there's any other way to put it.

Yeah, everyone can't play 28 minutes a game Brad!!

Dude has proven that he's so far been incapable of appropriately managing these guys, whether that be minutes, role, etc.

He's too nice. To do this effectively, you sometimes have to just do what needs to be done, even that doesn't make you out as the nice, calm guy.

Gordan Hayward is the least of our problems here. This team should have enough talent to overcome his developing play.

I'd like to see the minutes of Jaylen Brown lengthened, He plays a solid few minutes, then is taken out for what seems like extended minutes. Give him enough rope and see how he reacts with it.

I always wondered why fans feel the need to see the coach giving the team a spray or criticize them in public. Jose Mourinho who coaches Manchester United in the English Premier Leafue does that to his players all the time, throws them under the bus after each loss and that teams morale is at a low ebb.

None of us are in the locker room and none of us know what is being said behind closed doors.

But this team is shooting 28% from 3 tonight and 50% from 2. Maybe Brad is wrong and they should shoot more twos. He changed the starting line up but played Hayward more minutes...

Came to ask about this.  Only was able to tune in in the 4th.  Looks like Brown didn't play the last 15 minutes or so, and only played 19 total.  His box score stats look good for his minutes, but only Baynes and Theis played less.  So what was up with Brown tonight, did he not hustle, or miss some defense assignments, or something?

Actually is he in the dog house?  Every regular starter, including Hayward, has multiple 30+ minute games over the last 6 games, except for Brown.

I’m not sure what to say about this one.

I don’t think the usual “no offensive identity/chemistry” complaint applies tonight.  We scored 112 and shot 50% from the field.  Still not hitting as much as we should from 3, but still... 112 should get it done.

But the defense, which has been our saving grace this season, was the opposite tonight.  Can’t give up 117 to freaking Charlotte.  And we’re becoming a common victim of scoring guards.  Booker.  Murray.  Kemba.  If that happens once or twice, it’s a fluke.  Now it’s becoming a trend.

Frustrating.

This occurred to me too.  Normally you trust Smart to do as well as anybody can in these matchups, but it clearly didn’t work tonight.

They're one game over .500.  They've been torched defensively by multiple players - granted good ones but it's happening far too often.  How good defensively can they actually be? They have trouble stopping decent teams.

You feel Brad should be replaced? With who? And a year after we were 1 game away from the finals and 2 years from making the ECF?

I don't know if he should be replaced... yet. But he does clearly need some pressure put on him, as he's largely operated free from scrutiny in the press and everywhere else.

Look, he might just not be a coach that can manage this level of talent and egos, which quite honestly wouldn't surprise me given his character. Simply put - he's too nice. I don't think you can try to be everyone's friend and try to equally distribute the playing time like Brad is clearly trying to do.

But if we're still playing this type of inconsistent ball with inconsistent effort and terrible rotations in January, yeah, I'll be onboard with switching coaches. But for now Brad at least needs some pressure put on him to figure this out, because this is a giant waste of talent as it is right now.

No, the fact that we're still getting inconsistent effort from guys shows that Brad is not getting to his players.

And none of this even touches on the fact that Brad's in-game decision-making is subpar and his rotations are arbitrary with no logical basis, which is a problem he has dealt with since Day 1 in 2014. It doesn't matter how genius is he in his preparation, it's all for naught if he's simply incapable of making sound in-game decisions or adjusting to the other team.

None of us know the answer to this.  And many of us were trying to communicate telepathically to Brad to put Jaylen in and take Hayward out.

Brown was having an efficient game.  He was OK defensively.  Hayward was doing next to nothing in the 4th quarter.  Brown was well-rested and probably would have been a better choice to close the game.

No, actually I thought this was one of Brown's better games. He was attacking the hoop, taking good shots, and playing his regular solid individual defense. He was doing everything he needed for his role.

There's no real good excuse for why Brown didn't play down the stretch with Hayward playing instead.

While nobody would've stopped Kemba tonight, I do wonder if Brown's individual defense and greater size and length would've been better on him than Smart. As good as Smart is, he's not as good defensively on super speedy guards like Kemba. Brown's foot speed and increased length might've proved a different look for Kemba that threw him off.

Knowing Danny I'm pretty sure that pressure's already being applied.

I agree that his biggest issue right now is he doesn't know who his best lineup is. The previous starting lineup of Kyrie, Jayson, Jaylen, Gordon and Al seem to be like having a lineup of Ferraris when you might need a Ford truck or two to do the heavy lifting.

I am being a bit sarcastic. It's for those +/- lovers.

Smart played a very good offensive game today.

His defense wasn't up to his standard although not completely to blame.

But the +/- is FACTUAL here.

As poor as that is, right now Brad's biggest challenge will be keeping this locker room together. If we as fans are frustrated I can imagine how the players must feel. This adversity will either bring them together and weld them into a whole greater than the sum of the parts or it will splinter them. He needs to make sure people don't start pointing fingers and playing the blame game, that's how locker rooms become toxic. Maybe that's what Kyrie meant when he said we needed a 15 year vet  :-\

And at what point do we hold players accountable? It's interesting that the guy with the ring and an understanding of what it takes to win is showing up to start the season, while the guys that have been christened the next coming without earning it have struggled.

And how do you hold player's accountable? You cut their playing time. Outside of a few minor occurrences, Brad hasn't done that.

Rozier +6

Smart -12

Should have played Rozier more

Lol context is hard, huh?

I am being a bit sarcastic. It's for those +/- lovers.

Smart played a very good offensive game today.

His defense wasn't up to his standard although not completely to blame.

But the +/- is FACTUAL here.

TP. I will give Rozier credit that he actually played better tonight on both sides of the ball with only a few dumb shots.

I don’t understand the Jaylen Brown thing either.  I though he played one of his better games of the season in his limited time.  Some very good passes, which frankly is a rarity for him.  In control going to the rim.  Disruptive in defense.

Not sure what he did to get benched.  Maybe Stevens just thought Smart was the most likely candidate to smother a hot Kemba... which was a fair thought, until it became clear that Walker was scoring all over him.

So Brad made the right decision by benching Hayward, but proceeded to sabotage himself by playing Hayward over Brown in crunch time? ::) He's not ready yet...especially when we could've used Brown on Kemba.

The reality is that they choked the game away offensively.  Up 98-88 with 9 min left in the 4th, and they scored 6 more points in the NEXT 5 MINUTES.  You cannot play like that if you want to be win games in the NBA.

And let me be one of the first to say that Horford is a major problem right now.
you are not even close to being the first. when ever al has a bad game, a herd of posters say this. then al plays well.

But Al hasn't even had rebound games. He acts like he's allergic to shots at the rim and rebounds, his 3pt shooting has regressed.  He's not a good offensive player right now and really hasn't been yet this season.

Per Kyrie's comments about needing a veteran presence on the team....I wonder what it would take to pull Channing Frye from the Cavs?  Seems like a solid guy we could plug in for boards occasionally, doesn't need to shoot and could steer the young guys from the bench.

There are so many line up things I dont get. Having Kyrie and tatum out for extended time. Having baynes start over Hayward then still somehow play him over thirty minutes when it was clear he didnt have it tonight. Not play Rozier or Brown over 20 minutes when they are both having effective nights. Not maybe trying to switch Brown onto kemba when he was roasting Smart. And to be clear, Smart was playing great defense. Kemba just couldnt be stopped. the point is try something diffferent, let guys playing well play more. Less hayward untill he is closer to 100%

Which was what I was calling for a long time, Hayward off the bench as a sixth man averaging 23-28 MPG. But you know the educated Celtics fans who scream that we couldn't bench a max player who's SOOOO much better than our players ::)

You won't get any argument form me. And to be clear when hayward is right he IS VERY GOOD, and he absolutely should not come off the bench when he is back to being the guy he was his last year in Utah. But he's not that right now, he might not be for several months or even this entire year.

Kemba was just incredibly hot tonight but C's just folded down the stretch.  reaching the point in the season where Brad has got to stop experimenting with line-ups and rotations and get down to making this work.  too much talent on this roster for this team to be so bad.

almost to the point of wondering if the C's would have been better without Hayward returning this season --> without having to fit him in, would Tatum, Brown and Rozier continued their improvements from last season to this one?

Only problem is Al's good games have been far less common this season

I would agree that we would definitely be better without Hayward so far, but they are banking on him returning to normal. But it's obviously taking a long time as expected but it's def hurting the team in the process.

How did Kemba score 43? Isnt that the 3rd PG to recently score 40+ on our stout defense? I dont get it.

He is totally in a zone right now and didn't miss anything. He is also just too fast for anyone on our team. Surprisingly, Smart played some pretty good defense on him but it didn't matter.

Every game we have someone on the other team that just torches us. We just aren't that good. We are the 7 seed right now. Our effort last night was good. I liked the new rotations but our defense is not good if we can't stop a player from scoring 21 in the 4th quarter alone. I thought maybe they should have played Jaylen a little more at least defensively on Kemba to make him deal with more length but even that probably wouldn't have mattered. And because we had to spend so much attention and energy on Kemba, they were getting offensive rebounds and 2nd and 3rd opportunities on misses. And when 55 year old Tony Parker can torch us with two consecutive jumpers late in the 4th - it's over.

Even other guys, like Ingles and TJ Warren have lit us up. Very weird

Haven't looked at the stats but it sounds like our defense may be regressing; maybe guys are getting discouraged by the losses.  I also like the idea of using Brown more flexibly on defense.

Yeah, decent role players but ... blah.  Still confident we'll turn it around but odd trend recently with our elite defense.

Not to make excuses. We’ve played well below expectations.

But I can’t help but wonder if the new rules on defense are hurting us more than other teams. Can’t come up with a specific reason why that would be the case. Wonder if someone else can explain.
