Snarky response is 'you can't teach height, passing, or winning either apparently'.
But in all honesty, Ben Gordon is only 28, its easy to forget that. His shooting % was roughly the same as it was during his good years in Chicago, but his rate of scoring dropped significantly. And I don't mean just his points per game, his rate of scoring per minute on the floor dropped, which isn't a good thing in any world, but its also a bit confounding. His usage (amount of plays that end in his hands, roughly speaking) is pretty close to where it was his last year in Chicago.
I don't know what it adds up to, but its a strange situation.
How about the guy was playing for a paycheck and then got paid?
That is not who Ben Gordon is. He is a basketball guy through and through.
Loves to play, loves to work. A gym rat. One of the hardest workers in the league (during the season and in the off-season).
Then what's your take on his numbers?
I am not sure what to make of his numbers yet.
I want to see Ben Gordon in a better situation than Detroit. That was such a dysfunctional and badly managed backcourt over the last few years.
With John Kuester trying to fit in four guards in Stuckey, Rip, B.Gordon and W.Bynum to the detriment of each of their three best guards and their team as a whole. Then last year under Lawrence Frank with Brandon Knight (who was appallingly bad) replacing Rip Hamilton in what was a ridiculously small backcourt that was very vulnerable in terms of defense and rebounding. A backcourt that only exacerbated one another's weaknesses and made each other less effective.
I want to see what Ben Gordon can do in a proper situation before I consider writing him off. He still looks capable out there. His shot is great. He can create looks for himself. Has improved as a passer. Rest of his game has remained stagnant. Looks in good shape. Still only 28. Has a great character and work-ethic.
I just very difficult to write a man like that off ... especially when he was in such a bad situation in Detroit. Unfortunately, it looks like he is walking into another in Charlotte.
I'd love to see him find his way back onto a quality basketball team in a role that fits him.
