Hayward S&T (4 years, 100 million)
All (3) 2020 first-round picks
2022 first-round pick
2020 second-round pick
2021 second-round pick
Romeo Langford
Daniel Theis

For

Damontas Sabonis
Doug McDermott (expiring contract, make the dollars work)

This upgrades our roster now, alleviates our concern about crossing the luxury line, and banks on Tatum, Brown and Sabonis growing into the Big 3 that brings it all home.

1. Walker
2. Brown
3. Tatum
4. Sabonis
5. R. Williams
6. Smart
7. 9 mil. MLE who can play PF/C
8. McDermott
9. Ojeleye

Still have solid prospects in G. Williams and Edwards, so if one of them grows like we expect we’re suddenly ten-deep. We even have flexibility to trade Brown and/or Sabonis in the future if it does not work out and an upgrade opportunity becomes available.

Great. Now all you have to do is convince Kevin Pritchard to trade Sabonis. I think there is a better chance of convincing him to banish Larry Bird from attending Pacer games.

Eh, I absolutely hate the trade anyway, so I’m glad he would say no. I think I’d rather have Hayward for four years...never mind the addition of Theis, 4 1sts, and a promising young player in Langford.

That's a lot to give up. It would be a classic buy high sell low trade. Doesn't seem like a good move.

I doubt Sabonis would be able to have anywhere near the kind of season he had last year with more talented players. He may not be that productive ever again.

Indy loves Sabonis. That’s why they are trying to offload Turner.

I wouldn't favor this trade because I believe the strength of the Tatum/Brown combination is their defensive identity. As good as Sabonis is, he would dilute that, and would clear out Theis and any chance of getting a young big like Okongwu.

That being said, I think it is very important at this point that Ainge doesn't blow this offseason. We are at a stage where we have a lot of assets. Tatum and Brown appear to be what we needed them to be to have an NBA powerhouse, but a lot of our other assets, including our two max players and our trove of draft picks last year and this year, may not be what we need them to be.

Overpay away. We can give up more than we get but still end up with players better positioned to contribute. Just get some tough defense first role players, some passing and some spacing that can hold up in a close playoff series. Tatum and Brown can do the rest. We have some guys like Smart and Theis already. We just need to fill in the gaps.

I like Sabonas, but this is just too much. From the Cs’ side, giving Hayward - after a sign and trade to reduce his annual salary - plus maybe a late first or Theis or Rob could work, but I don’t see the Pacers having interest. They see Sabonas as a cornerstone of their team. He’s young, on a good contract, and an all-star. Trading him away for a 31-year old Hayward would be very very unpopular in Indy.

I had a thought that may or may not make sense.
I was thinking - can Brad and Danny convince Hayward to lose 20-25lbs?
He’s listed as 6’7” 225 lbs.
If he gets down to 200 his knees and ankles should be able to take the beating without the injuries hopefully..
Than have him guard tall guards but not strong forwards...
Maybe even play him in a JJ redick role with some playmaking duties...
Could this be the best use of Gordon?

Close, but we should throw in 5 or 6 more first round picks.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

If I am going "all in" for the C's this year it is Sabonis or KP.  Neither is likely remotely available, but if they could snag them I'd do so for Haywood and anything else almost except the other members of the starting 5.

This is an overpay IMO.

Take a look at career numbers: FG/3%/2%/RPG/APG/BPG/PPG  (from Basketball-Reference)

Sabonis:  .522/.321/.545/8/2.6/.4/12.1
Turner:  .488/.357/.524/6.7/1.2/2.1/12.7

If I can give up less for Turner, I'm doing it.

I think the career averages are a bit diluted.  Sabonis put up 18.5 pts and 12.4 Rebs last season.  Turner was 12.1 and 6.6.  Stat lines don't tell the whole story but everything I understand is that Indy values Sabonis much higher than Turner (as they should).

Turner is a realistic potential get for us in a deal that includes Hayward and perhaps a pick for Turner and one of Oladipo, Lamb, or maybe Warren.  Turner would be a nice upgrade for the Celtic's big rotation.  Oladipo or Lamb would both be useful (Warren would be really nice but probably not all that realistic to expect to get).

We can add all the draft picks and bench players we want to the deal and Indy still isn't going to trade Sabonis.
