I am not suggesting the Cs should -- or will -- trade Tatum. Thus me stating "decided" not "decide" in the title.... I'm looking for a hypothetical exercise here. That said, I'm curious: what is the best (and most beneficial) package the Cs could get in the current market for Tatum?

I think some of the most obvious packages would come from teams like Portland, OKC, and Sacramento, and I don't think Stevens would send Tatum to Siberia for fear of the long term repercussions. But for the sake of this mythical exercise, let's remove that issue.

Would OKC trade SGA, Bazley, and multiple picks for Tatum?

Would the Kings trade Haliburton, Mitchell and either Barnes or Hield for him?

Would Cleveland trade Mobley for him?

Would TOR trade Barnes and Siakum for him?

Zion would be the guy I'd look at most closely.  Certainly would have issues about his health, but I think he has a higher ceiling than Tatum if it all works out.

As for other trades I'd look at these very hard

Ayton, Bridges for Tatum

Anunoby, Barnes for Tatum

Sabonis, Turner, 3 1st's for Tatum

Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody, Poole, filler for Tatum, Fernando

Avidja, Bryant, Kispert, Kuzma, 3 1st's for Tatum

LaMelo, Bridges, filler for Tatum
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

unfortunately i feel like the clock is ticking on him if we stay mediocre

he'll push for a way out eventually

that just seems to be the norm these days

By "stay mediocre" what exactly do you mean? We have won playoff series' in most years of his career, and he has made the ECF twice. Sure, we're having a poor year, but we've had poor starts before
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

We were a .500 team in 2020-21. We're basically that this year. If it persists, that's "staying mediocre".

Don't think Toronto does Barnes and OG. Is Ayton worth handing out big money to? I don't see the WAS deal or the GSW deal for the Cs, and i don't see the point of putting Turner on top of Sabonis.

And I'm not trading Tatum for Zion.

Realistically, you’re probably either getting

Package A: salary filler, 1 polarizing prospect and a bunch of picks+swaps.

Package B: all-star on the last years of his prime and a pick or 2.

not liking any of them but the Toronto deal would be the least nauseating only because Barnes is looking like a ROY candidate with some real room to grow.

also, not seeing how Zion has the higher ceiling at all.  guy is not in Tatum's league in terms of shooting.  Tatum's rebounding has picked up this year as well as his passing (still not great but much better).  Zion can be a brute force when healthy but only as a physical force near the bucket rather than an anywhere on the court force like Tatum.  health issues also can't be ignored -- Tatum's been pretty darn healthy for his career.  that cannot be ignored

Why is that realistic? Young stars would generate better returns than that.

Agreed. Those aren't the likely outcomes of trading a young All-Star like Tatum.

have to agree.  C's wouldn't ship Tatum for anything less than an MVP candidate coming back.  might mean adding something to Tatum to make it work but he's too good and important to this team to deal for spare parts or taking risks on players rehabbing their games physically/mentally.

Stop, just stop...

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

An MVP candidate? There's 2-3 in the league -- Tatum ain't even close to bein' one of 'em -- and none of them is getting traded for Tatum. He'd almost certainly be the best player in the deal, but I think the Cs would hold out for either another All-Star, or 2 really good young players & change.
