Put me in the YES camp for this extension.

If Timelord just stays mostly healthy and even makes minor improvements to his game in the next couple of years this is a steal
Good to have no contract issues hanging over any of the Tatum-Brown-Smart-Timelord foursome going into this year.
Guys can concentrate on playing ball and getting better.

Don't like the deal but after Smart extension and no Markkenan deal makes sense. Would have much rather had a per of 11 million or a front loaded deal and then it would feel good. Given the guys history it's a overpay.

Why would he agree to $44 million over four years, though?  That's just barely over the MLE.  There's no incentive for him to sign.
Given his medicals he would have to consider it.

Like others, love this and think it’s a steal. All about health with him. A year of staying healthy and under Al’s tutelage, and Timelord is probably close to a $20M guy next summer. He’s super impactful when he’s actually on the floor. Luckily, most of his injuries have been of the freak accident/minor injury type, so I’m hoping it’s more bad luck than a genuinely “injury prone” player.

It's a gamble, but probably a decent one.  It's slightly over MLE money, for a guy who isn't all that far off from Jerome Allen (5 years, $100 million)

I agree completely. The team’s medical advisors must be optimistic.

Work ethic and unique abilities.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

A healthy Timelord "is" our third superstar. Love this signing. TL impacts the game more than most players in this league, near as much as the Jays.

Maybe, other than playing games... hopefully this superstar can also be on the floor more than 19 minutes a game.

Not knocking signing him, but... easy there.

Seems like an overpay for potential here. Unlikely Williams ever stays healthy though. I understand his impact but all that doesn’t matter if he can’t stay on the court which is a legitimate problem for him. Let’s hope he can stay healthy enough for him to be a trade chip. His hip and artery issues are concerning so I don’t see a long career for him so good for him for cashing in.

Good post. Rob has an abnormally lengthy injury history, but with the promise he’s demonstrated, extending him now is a solid “buy-low” opportunity. One healthy season at his past production will make him a valuable asset at $13M per year.

In a league full of elite athletes, Rob is among the cream of the crop at 6’8 237+ with elite measurements. Last season, he showed previously hidden potential to be an above average passer at his position, elite shooting potential out to 16 feet (.801 from 0-3 /.651 from 3-10 / .643 from 10-16). In Horford, he’ll have the best mentor for how to maximize his talent in a low impact style. Udoka sung his praises as a game changer in the Nets series, so he’s going to get minutes. The best of luck to him.

Pumped about this!  Jarrett Allen is making $20 mil per (as mentioned by Roy) and Kelly Olynyk is making $12 mil.  Time Lord at $13.5 mil is a bargain.

.643 from 10-16 seems insane, is he taking lobs from 10+ out?

9 makes in 14 attempts can produce some wonky numbers.

High risk high reward. If he stays healthy it is a steal.

Solid deal.  I thought the Celtics would wait until closer to training camp.  One thing that seems different between Ainge and Stevens is timing.  Ainge seemed to like to wait until the last minute to get deals done, but Stevens seems willing to make the deal happen if it's good enough.  We saw this in the Kemba trade (making it in June rather than waiting until the draft/free agency), getting the Smart extension done now rather than dragging negotiations to save a few million, and now Time Lord.  No judgment on which method is better, but it does seem to be a difference.

Stevens is better….take care of your players.
