Plus, he's from Haverhill isn't he?
Yes, but that isn't why I'd bring him in. Why I'd do it is they need to start thinking beyond Horford who can opt out as soon as next summer. Would also help to have a little bit of (potential) cover should he get hurt.
1. You can rest assured Horford is not opting out after next year from a $30 million a year contract at the age of 33. He would never get that on the open market.
2. If we want some to cover for Horford if he is hurt, Baynes and Morris are ridiculously better options to replace him.
3. The Celtics just drafted Williams in the draft and have Yabu and Semi. They aren't going to trade or release players to open a spot to develop Vonleh when they are already trying develop 3 other young players and are going to try to win it all at the same time.
I agree with points 2 and 3. On a side note, the question isn't whether or not Horford could get 30 million next year. The question would be what would make him the most money over the rest of his career (assuming he is trying to maximize his earning potential).
What if he deals with injuries or a downtick in production in 2018-2019. Does he suddenly become more of a role player? In that case, is he able to make 60 million (15 million a year) in years 34-37, for a total of 90 million over the rest of his career? Maybe, but I doubt it.
In that case, maybe he would want to opt-out and sign a 4 year, 80 million dollar deal. for age 33-36 seasons. This helps the Cs and Horford.
