Great video on Smart's impact as the best defensive guard in the NBA. His defensive impact is dwarfed by defensive giants in the frontcourt, but it is still valuable enough to make him a top 40-50 player even with slightly negative offence (although I disagree with the latter, I think his ability to pass and shoot isn't just limited to being an extra passer/low usage off-ball guard), and even gives him fringe All-Star value in the right situation where his offensive skills are maximised next to teammates who're talented on the ball.

I was literally about to post this LOL.

I think if Smart is able to have a consistent shot, (I'm still holding out hope that maybe he can) his playmaking and ability to make excellent reads on offense is leaps and bounds ahead of him in his rookie year --- I could see him as a fringe All-Star. I do think he's a player who is better off starting versus coming off the bench. His energy gives our team that boost.

He's come a long way, and should've had at least 2x All Defensive Team selections by now..

Agreed. I feel that his ability to playmake is still underrated by many in the sense that he can actually make lead guard reads instead of purely being an extra passer, and that gives him enough value on both ends of the floor to be a fringe All-Star.

And he'll start at centre for us in a Celtics/Rockets finals matchup 8)

Ha, I too was just about to post this.

I think he definitely unlocks different looks for us. Now that he's actually a shooter worth defending his passing is a much more real threat. I don't agree that he's a slight negative on offence anymore, but that's okay. If there wasn't so much young guard talent in the East (Young, Simmons and potentially Ball & Edwards) I think he'd have a more realistic shot at actually making an All-Star team, but even as is, I'd rather him than many

It’ll be pretty hard to believe if he doesn’t. Guys like Bledsoe and Beverley aren’t on his level

He should be a no-brainer for the first team.

Terrific video. I love seeing him get some love out there. His impact when he's on the floor is incalculable.

Incalculable is the perfect word. That’s why metrics, whether they imply he’s a good defender or not, will never wholly capture how he impacts the game. And that’s why he’s such a “love to have him, hate to face him” player
