Title: Rondo Was Almost Suspended Against Miami in 2011
Post by: Big333223 on September 13, 2018, 10:49:53 AM
Zach Lowe interviewed Ian Thomsen about Thomsen's new book "The Soul of Basketball" about the 2010-11 season and it sounds like there's a fair amount of good Celtics stuff.

One thing they talk about that's in the book is that the team almost suspended Rajon Rondo before Game 3 (the game Wade almost broke Rondo's arm) because he got into a fight with Doc, threw and bottle of water at him, breaking a TV and covering Doc with water and then he walked out of the meeting.

Thomsen says Doc and the Big 3 had a meeting to discuss whether or not Rondo should be suspended. The team eventually let him play but were apparently so upset with Rondo that when Rondo's arm was bent backwards in the game, an assistant coach is quoted as saying "The basketball Gods are amazing motherf-----s," as a way of saying "Karma sucks."

It sounds like this book is a must-read.

I loved Rondo but this story doesn't surprise me one bit.  Could totally see him doing all of that.

I hope he hasn't matured since then.

The “water bottle into the TV” story isn’t new, although that quote is.

Somewhere out there Ray Allen is thinking how can I take advantage of this?

I was actually thinking, for all the hate Ray gets for leaving, should Rondo catch any flak for driving Ray out? I don't know.

I may be remembering this incorrectly, but I think Ray brought this up.  Ray says he approached Rondo the following summer after trade rumors involving Rondo + Ray to Phoenix got leaked. Ray said "dude, you need to calm it down or you're going to get us traded", which irritated Rondo and led to the break down of their relationship completely.  Ray says that Rondo then froze him out of the offense, and blames Doc for benching him rather than attempting to reign in Rondo.

I couldn't stand Rondo then and dislike him even more now.  I really wish Ainge could have swindled some team into taking him when the Big 3 still had a real shot at winning.  He just couldn't find that team until it was far too late.

I don't know what it would've taken to get him but I think it was the summer after the water bottle incident that he was trying to get Chris Paul for Rondo and couldn't get it done. That's a pretty interesting sliding door.

Still hate Ray Allen for leaving Boston to join Miami's Big 3. I mean, you leave the team to join the team that beat you and took less money for it.

But Rondo needs to get a fair share of blames too. He was too immature. I guess that "karma" really bit him when he tore his ACL in 2013.

Now Rondo and Ray Allen both have something in common- affiliation with LeBron James. And I hate LeBron, and the Lakers.

Rondo was a immature jerk at times, but Rondo behaving badly wasn't going to be a reason that Ray might have gotten traded.

For the benching, I seem to remember Ray being injured, then Avery coming in and working his tail off on def and contributing some on offense and when Ray healed up Doc decided just to stay with Avery.  Maybe Rondo lobbied for Avery, who knows, but Ray wasn't just benched by Doc, there was a greater context to the whole situation.

I remember when they put together the big 3 and thinking that this guy Rondo was a big question mark. Second year non shooting PG starting next to 3 hall of famers, he better not screw this up. And he didn't, rather he extended their run and elevated his game further than most thought he would. Most importantly his competitivness is through the roof, and whatever Ray or some unnamed assistant says about this or that doesn't change squat about what he actually did for the team.

I remember the rumors that Minny wanted Rondo and not Delonte West included in the deal  :D

Yeah, I also remember when Ainge wanted James Harden instead of Jeff Green in the Perk deal.
