Quote
Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is stepping down, sources told ESPN.

In the aftermath of Houston's elimination from the NBA's restart in Orlando, Florida, Morey approached owner Tilman Fertitta with the idea of leaving the job and the sides quietly worked through an exit agreement to conclude his 13 seasons running the franchise's basketball operations, sources said.

Morey isn't ruling out a future return to the NBA on the team side, but he has become increasingly determined to explore what else might interest him professionally, sources said. Morey also saw an opportunity to spend time with two college-age children who are each taking a gap year academically during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sources: Lue gains momentum for Rockets job
Morey will remain in an advisory role for a short period to assist in the Rockets' completion of their head-coaching search, sources said.

The Rockets are planning to promote executive vice president of basketball operations Rafael Stone to general manager, sources said. Stone has played a significant part in the Rockets' team building throughout his tenure with the organization.

Houston is also promoting Eli Witus to assistant general manager, sources said.

Under Morey, the Rockets have the league's longest consecutive playoff appearance streak with eight -- advancing in the Western Conference playoffs in each of the past four years.

Nevertheless, his final season on the job became engulfed in scrutiny after a tweet supporting freedom in Hong Kong led to China pulling the NBA off its airwaves and suspending sponsorship agreements with the league.

China returned the NBA to its airwaves for the first time during the NBA Finals.

Commissioner Adam Silver and Fertitta supported Morey, despite China's calls for his dismissal. Silver estimated that the league's losses in revenue could cost in the neighborhood of $400 million.

There had been leaguewide uncertainty about Morey's job security since his tweet affected the NBA's and Rockets' business relationships with China, costing Fertitta millions of dollars in sponsorship money. Through it all, Fertitta remained consistently adamant that he was committed to Morey, calling him "the best general manager in the league" in an interview with ESPN on the night of the tweet. Fertitta never seemed to waver in his plan for Morey to continue running the Rockets' basketball operations.

Despite the economic turmoil of the pandemic, Fertitta has publicly and privately insisted that he is committed to keeping the Rockets a contender in the Western Conference, even if that means elevating the team's payroll into the luxury tax.

Morey has been the Rockets' general manager since 2007-08 and have the league's second-best regular-season record over his 13 years as general manager and 14 years with the franchise. He signed a five-year contract extension in March 2019.

Stone, who played basketball at Williams College and received a law degree from Stanford, has served as the Rockets' general counsel since 2005. He was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations in April 2019, briefly before former Rockets executive Gersson Rosas left to become the Minnesota Timberwolves' president of basketball operations.

Woah, that's crazy. Not gonna say he was perfect, but he did a pretty good job with the Rockets.

Morey will be back in the spotlight in a year. My prediction is him  taking over the Knicks then.

Apart from winning a title, this was definitely happening after last fall, right? Celtics should grab him as a consultant for a year so he has time to set up and cherry pick his next job.

Covid hit Rockets owner very bad financially.
I wonder if there will be a fire sale in Houston to reduce expenses.
Besides Tucker and possibly Harden what can we get from them that will help our team?

The article actually states that the Rockets owner is committed to contending and will even pay the luxury tax to do so. So, I don't think there will be any fire sales happening in Houston anytime soon.

Rockets ownership would never say that they are cutting expenses and throwing the towel. ... but ownership were reluctant to pay luxury taxes even when they had Chris Paul and almost defeated GSW.. I would think Morey stepping down because his hands would be tied - no picks , very few tradable assets. Not an enviable place to be at.
From what I see on the rockets forum Houston fans are slowly accepting that their window of competing is closed now. They all keep saying the same thing that Fertitta is hurting financially.

Remember similar scenario that gifted us the Js... Prochorov businesses started hurting and he cut expenses dramatically right about 2016. Those picks that OKC control now are becoming very precious.

I do feel for Morey. He did build a team that could actually compete with the Warriors during their dynastic stretch, but unfortunately luck didn't favor him. CP3 went down with an injury right after going up 3-2 in a series, then they had that Game 7 where they missed a ton of 3s (which sadly the C's can relate to as well).

He tried his best and tried to build the roster around what D'Antoni and Harden preferred as their iso-system with emphasis on 3-point shooting. He was successful but typically the Warriors were a roadblock and I think he was pressured into trading for Westbrook after a disappointing 2019 where they choked against the KD-less Warriors and because Harden was friends with Russ. In desperation they also abandoned the traditional big man and while Tucker put forth a valiant effort, smallball didn't work out.

Rockets are going to be screwed going forward anyways as Westbrook's contract is only going to get a lot worse. Idk if they can really add to that roster either without trading any of their current stars or starters.

He was one healthy Chris Paul hamstring away from a title IMO. Bad luck.

He'll definitely find work if he wants it

Morey can have any open job he wants, and probably some that aren't open. I'll keep Ainge, but if Danny were to decide he's had enough, Morey would be an excellent choice.

And I still support him for speaking up for HK, even if he cost the league money for doing it. Too bad for them. He was right.

He's a good GM but not someone I would approach for championship aspiration as this guy is overly analytical with his approach.

Get him to the Celtics and make him Ainge's heir to the GM position.

I’m pretty stunned with this one.

First move by Houston has to be trade Westbrook. Anyone desperate enough to take him? Knicks?
