Jeff Green had a big game and showed the aggressiveness that the Celtics need from him in the first game.  The big test will be whether he can do it two games in a row.

Honorable Mention
Jared Sullinger
After serving a suspension in the first game, this will be Jared's first regular season game.  The Celtics need his presence under the basket and his rebounding.

Players to Watch

After being courted by the Celtics for the past couple of seasons, OJ Mayo is now with the Bucks.  He is capable of scoring in bunches if not defended well.

Honorable Mention

Larry Sanders
Last season, Larry Sanders had a couple of big games against the Celtics.  He had 18 points and 16 rebounds in one game and 20 rebounds in another.  Hopefully the Celtics bigs can contain him in this one.

Game Notes

The Celtics come into their home opener looking for their first win of the season.  The Bucks are also looking for their first win, having lost to the Knicks on the road on Wednesday.

The Celtics starting lineup is still up in the air. I have a feeling that it's going to be awhile before we actually know who will be starting each game.  The starting lineup above is once again from the Game Notes.  I think they just go with the starters from the previous game.  I'm going to take a guess and say that in this game Stevens will start
Jordan Crawford
Avery Bradley
Jeff Green
Jared Sullinger
Kelly Olynyk
Crawford was playing the point on the green team in practice.  And after Wednesday's game, Stevens said something about had Sully been available he might have started Kelly next to him.  So, I'm taking a wild guess on my pick.  Maybe we should have a predict the starting lineup contest for every game.

Like the Celtics, the Bucks have several new players and are trying to build past being a middle of the pack team.  This is a very winnable game if the Celtics come in and play with energy for 48 minutes.

Keys to the Game
Attack the Paint - In their first game, the Bucks were outscored in the paint 50-28 by the Knicks.  The Celtics need to attack the hoop and not settle for jumpers.

Rebound- The Celtics must attack the boards on both ends of the court.  They have to grab offensive rebounds to give themselves more second chance points and they must grab defensive rebounds to keep the Bucks from getting those second chances.

Make Layups - In every game so far, the Celtics have missed way too many bunnies.  What should be easy points end up being turnovers or missed opportunities.  They have to find a way to make those layups.

Defense - Defense is always a key to winning.

X-Factor
Home Court Advantage
This is the Celtics home opener.  The fans will still be hyped from the Red Sox victory on Wednesday and should give the team a nice lift with their energy.

Bold Predictions

Jeff Green does his vanishing act. 8 points, 3 boards, 3 assists. 2-5 from deep

Jordan Crawford leads the team in points, assists, and technicals.

Jared Sullinger gets his hands on the ball like it's his ex-girlfriend and finishes with 11 boards in 25 minutes.

Brandon Knight lights up the C's for 21 points, along with 5 assists and 4 boards.

FINAL SCORE
98-90. Celtics Win.

BOLD PREDICTIONS: Kelly Olynyk comes alive offensively 22 points on 8-12 shooting. Brandon Bass outrebounds Sully. We win in overtime.

BOLD prediction

Crawfish will be dropping dimes 10+ assists
El Hombre Indestructible for a double-double
Lee where art thou??
The passive Green again
If I got a dollar for everytime Bass struggles to create his own shot, I could be buying my own Nets team
Come to the KO's clinic, this kid will have a great game
Sully will be grabbing rebounds like it's intentional that Crawford/Lee and Bradley are shooting bricks

1st Game of the Season 10+ point lead at the end

The bucks match-up very poorly this this celtics team.I will be interested to see if Stevens leaves the same starting lineup. This will cause some odd cross match-ups with either Knight or Mayo having to guard Wallace or Green. If thats the case then use kelly or sully early at center to pull sanders out of the paint.

El Hombre held his own against Brother Jonas in the last game.  I'm excited to see how he looks against the Human Pogo Stick in tonight's contest.

I don't think Faverani can keep Larry Sanders off the glass. Sanders is too quick and agile for him. I am looking forward to seeing Faverani post him up on the other end though. Sanders is a dodgy post defender and Faverani has a good 20lbs on him. Be a good test for how good Faverani's post skills are.

It's not just the 20 pounds, but Vitor's got some nice skills down there as well.   Plus, he looks like a really good roller off the pick.  It's too bad there's nobody on the team to make nice passes in the pick and roll game right now.

More Pressey, or--gasp--even Crawfish?

No Ridnour or Brandon Knight for this game, Bucks announced.

I haven't been paying attention to the Buck's preseason--how has their Greek wunderkind been playing?

Some very flashy plays.  He can really jump and dunk, he moves like Durant (without the ball that is) and he can really block shots.  Around the rim of course but I've seen him block a good amount of jumpers too.  I'm curious how much of that is not knowing how long this kid is but obviously he has the hands and length to make that a habit.

Join us in the CelticsBlog  Chat Room after the game to interact with the hosts of the CLNSradio Post Game Podcast.  Nick Gelso and Jared Weiss were also at the unveiling of Bill Russell's statue today in Boston and will be at the game tonight...hopefully they will call in to comment, too.

Hope to see some of you there.

Also, Brandon Knight is not playing tonight, so I imagine Wolters will be starting at PG.

Just moving Henson out of the way on the block in the next play. Henson is too weak physically and vulnerable defensively to be more than a 15mpg player.

Craw with the nice runner but inexcusable defense on the other end.  Should have been pulled from the game from his consistently poor D after that one.

Milwaukee's offense is so ugly. They miss B.Jennings and M.Ellis.

Khris Middleton is another Bucks player who is underdeveloped physically and looks like he can be pushed around at will. This Bucks team is going to get overpowered so often this season.

Three undersized players on the wing (Mayo, Neal, Middleton) and three undersized bigs (Ilyasova, Henson and to a lesser extent Sanders).

I dont know if the Bucks are just awful (and I thought they are an EAST sleeper) but our rebounding is just great.

We don't have the elite talent, but if we can rebound the way we do like this game, we will be in position to win a ton of games.

Everybody seems active on the boards. Sully, El Hombre and Bass. I hope Kelly gets the rub as well.

Larry Sanders and Valincunas are both legit centers, not sure what you're waiting for.  Valincunas is a top prospect and Sanders was in the running for DPOY.

Speaking of Humphries, he hasn't played a minute.

Is there a problem or is ne just not in the rotation?

Not in the rotation. We're already playing 4 bigs, and that's not counting Green and Wallace who also can play PF.

Avery Bradley is awful. I am sorry. Guy still has not learned how to play and type of point guard play and its terrible. Yes good defender but still turning the ball over hurts so much. Wallace too. He is a turnover machine. But Tommy was 100% right we stopped doing what got us a 22 point lead and we lost. Well this is going to be a long season.

I think I've seen enough of Avery at point.

We should now try and let Jordan Crawford run this team. He could be worse or not a ton better, but at least he's a much better scoring threat and that may put the defense on their heels.

I'm glad we did not extend Bradley. We probably would have overpaid him. The way I see it, I don't think he's even worth $6 million per year.

Every single time the opposing team decides to play defense, this team will fold like a tent.
No ball handlers (minus Rondo of course). No shooters, no one who can create their own shot and not enough passers among your guards and small forwards.

If we are going to lose games, we might as well develop players. Pressey is a true pg. He can keep the offense running when Rondo goes to the bench, gets in foul trouble, or gets suspended.  ;) He needs to be developing now. Why waste time with the Bradley/Crawford experiment?

This loss was not about not having a star to bring the game home. This loss was about guys handling the ball that had no business trying to set up the offense. It was about bad shots leading to easy fastbreaks and leakouts. You didn't need a star to win this game.

Good points by both tommy and kuber.  :)

A number of posters noted before the season that with no real passer or go to scorer the final minutes in a close game would be painful. Today confirms this.

The celtics team needs to run, run, run. Their half court offense is  really weak.

The bright note is that there is talent on this team. But currently it is mismatched.  I am hopeful for the next few years.

I mean that's who we are supposed to be right? Cheat the system so we'd have a shot (not a guarantee, a shot) to win in the future in the cheapest possible way. Let's be delighted that we're losers.

Absolutely. While the losses are good for the betterment of the franchise, I don't want them to be complete lopsided or 48 minute sludgefests.  The Celtics looked fantastic for 3/4th of the game.  They looked more energetic and entertaining than about 95 percent of the games last season WITH Pierce and KG.  In a regular year, the fourth quarter would've been unbearable but in this strange season, it doesn't erase all the shine.

Faverini is fun to watch.  Lefthanded hooks with laser accuracy and pillowy touch, putback jams in transition, physicality on both ends,  high energy, a decent touch from outside.  What a great scouting job by the front office.  He's all the more enjoyable because I had no prior judgment about him.

I'm a big-picture kinda guy.  I'd rather us win 15 games than win 35.  This blog itself acknowledges they have a ceiling of 38 wins.  There's no point to that.   I want a top 8 pick... preferably top 5.  I don't want us to roll over, though.

Meanwhile, I want to see Wallace, Bass and Lee have some productive minutes.  Right now they are terrible contracts that no team in their right mind would trade for.  I want us to dump those mediocre cap-leeches for expiring contracts... the only way that happens is if they put up enough stats to sucker some team into trading for them.

I also want to see the young guys show improvement.

Tonight was a win/win/win scenario.

#1 - We lost.  We made a game of it, though.  Check.

#2 - Wallace, Bass and Lee all had solid games.  Check.

#3 - Fav looked fantastic.  Sully played about as good as he will play in 10 minutes of action.   Oly was fine in limited minutes.   Check.

Negatives:  Bradley was sorta meh.   No stock-increasing minutes for Humph.  Green needs to do more if we're going to dump him for anything substantial.

Overall I give this game another A-.

Lakers shredding the Spurs in half. They do so darn well during the regular season.

If he keeps playing this well and Rondo comes back before January, it might have a somewhat somber undertone.  We'll have to wonder what this team might have been with Rondo, Pierce, Green, KG and Fav all playing together.  KG and Fav together... *sigh*...

I don't find it very likely that Fav will continue to play this well, though.  And who knows when/if ROndo will come back.  So whatevs.

Bradley didn't play that bad, but he was a +9 for the game. Vitor played much better and he was only a +1.

Can someone explain to me how we lost?

I missed the whole second half.

I don't think that team would be very good, maybe mid-level playoff team.  Rondo, Green, Fav < DWill, JJohnson, Lopez

That is insane.

He shot 29% from the floor (most of them open shots too), had 4 turnovers, 2 rebounds and 2 assists on 33 minutes, and got 6 fouls too.

How in the world was he a +9, did 1 steal put him into positive?

I don't get it.
