I apologize if there is already one of these threads but I scanned through the first 5 pages and didn't see one.
Anyways, since we may own the Clippers pick if they make the playoffs we should be watching them closely as we are doing with the Kings and Grizzlies.
The Clippers record currently stands at 6-4 and they're about tied for 5th in the Western Conference. I still think they don't make playoffs as I see the following teams ending up with a better record: Utah, Houston and possibly Minnesota, if they don't give Butler away for nothing. Not sure how LAL will fare either. So this thread could be dead null and void by the all-star break or could go down to the wire if a couple of major injuries hit the upper level teams.
Their next 10 games or so could see them go .500 and keep them out of the lottery standings.
-
I’ll start watching intently if Butler or another star lands there either this year or next
-
LAC currently stand at 6-5, having just lost to Portland last night.
Their upcoming schedule is as follows:
vs. Milwaukee
vs. GSW
vs. San Antonio
@ Brooklyn
@ Atlanta
@ Washington
Hoping for at least 3 wins here.

Tough homestand. Could definitely see them losing all three.
I’m sure they wlll find a way to lose one of those road games.
Even if they go 6-0, they’re not making the playoffs. That pick is done. Just need to stay better than SAC.
-
Might as well be optimistic and hope they are somehow on the bubble in April. LAC defeated MIL 126-124 in OT. Bledsoe hit a stepback 3 to send the game to OT. Lou Williams then hit the game winner, an off-balance contested layup with 0.3 seconds left.
Record now 7-5! ;) At the time of this post, SAC BOS and LAC are all 7-5! ;D
-
who would thought Kings and Celtics have same record after 12 games 😒
-
Celtics will get it together eventually lol
-
Clippers beat Curry-less GSW in OT. 8-5 now. :D
-
Maybe there should be a Celtics watch thread because all the other teams we are watching Clippers, Kings, Grizzlies are doing better or about the same as the Celts and they are in the West? :o

IF they had our picks then they would have threads like those, we have their picks so we have these threads.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2018 #11 pick) has started the last four games. Looks like Doc is committed to starting SGA, a rookie (!!!!), even when AB comes back.
#Clippers' coach Doc Rivers on starting Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. #Wolves - "It was great. Shai was going to start whether Avery [Bradley] was healthy or not. We were going to move the lineup around cuz I think it's time for him to start. I thought Shai was fantastic."

He loves coaching old guys, but he's actually very good at coaching young teams.

So did we decide, is this good? Surely they can't last as a #1 or even #5 seed in the West, but with a start like this maybe they sneak in the playoffs and we get a 1st, not a future 2nd?

Of course this is good, would much rather get a late 1st than a couple of 2nds. Obviously making the playoffs in the West will be tough but 11-5 is a good start. They also have more winnable games in the coming weeks.

It most definitely is a good thing - a 1st is obviously better than a 2nd.
It would be great if they finished up around 7th or 8th in the WC, but I will take them finishing where they are now over getting the ~#40 pick next year.

Extra reason to watch some clips tonight is that they’re playing the wizards :D

could hear Wiz fans booing at 36-18 Clips... 38-18 now!

Weekly update, LAC (13-6) is currently in the #28 slot.

This is a young and ferocious Clippers team though. SGA and Montrezl Harrell are keystone players (I've heard).
I wonder deep down if many of the roster decisions were influenced by Doc during his years here.
Jerry West + Doc Rivers seems like a helluva team. Doc stays off making any roster decisions, and focuses on coaching.

On SEGABABA, Clips def. Kings 133-121 :o
15-6 now!

Double win for us tonight. All aboard the Clip-Train!
Choo-choo!!!!

Everything going very nicely with the Clips pick. No incentive to tank yet, given their record - they only need to go at .500 until the trade deadline to prevent the tank, and be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Pat Beverly was such a nice piece to get back in that CP3 trade. Watching him and Avery on the court together is something to behold. I won't be surprised if Clips even look at upgrading Gortat or Mike Scott (although they've both been playing pretty great too).

I may be incorrect but I thought Clips pick is a 1st protected pick this year OR next year before it conveys as a second if not yet conveyed.

Nope, this is it.
Lottery protected and if it doesn’t convey, it turns into a second.
So it could be anywhere from 15-44.

Yes, to my surprise. But they clearly can't afford any injuries or down they go in the competitive West. Just look at the teams they have to fend of. No easy task. They have to keep playing well.

They keep playing like this the rest of the season Doc will be coach of the year.

Better luck this time if they make the playoffs?

I just posted in the Memphis season thread and I thought I'd post here as well.
We own the Clippers pick (2019 draft) if it's not in the lottery or it rolls over until next year. If they don't make the playoffs next year we get their 2nd rounder in 2020.
Like Memphis LAC has been on a downward slide but right now the pick would still convey (#20 as of today). We're likely to get their first rounder eventually as they are a strong contender to land a significant free agent next summer.
Where does everyone stand regarding getting their pick this upcoming draft or in 2020? I'd prefer their pick this year because of what I said about them landing a FA next summer and being a top 4 team in the West with their pick likely in the mid/late 20's.
-
This pick is slowly coming close to being in the lottery and being sent to the clips
Keep losing doc!

It’s not a guarantee they land a top FA (see Paul George) so I would want it to convey this year.
-
So it looks like the Clippers will be fighting it out for the last playoff spot in West, likely with the Lakers. I'd guess it's a 50/50 chance, or less, the pick conveys this year. I'm not including the Kings until I see what happens through the month of February, as their schedule is loaded with tough teams.
Supposedly, there's a good chance they sign a significant free agent this summer so we could still get their pick in 2020 if it falls out of the lottery. Otherwise, we get their 2nd rounder.
It also looks like we'll have to start a 2019-2020 Memphis watch thread pretty soon (haha) as we are very unlikely to get their pick this year. It's top 6 protected next year and unprotected in 2021 (yeeaaahhh boooyyyyy!)
-
looks like Memphis gotta struggle next 3 years so 2021 first pick maybe??
-
The Clips are holding this 2 game lead on the Lakers and are only a half a game behind Utah for 7th. But Lebron is going to come back at some point (isn't he?) so that'll make it tougher to hold that spot.
Let's go Clippers!

Tobias Harris traded for picks and Shamet. See you next year. :)

LA Clippers that is.

All joking aside...I can see the clippera pushing hard for Davis right now.
Lots of picks, SGA and expirings.
Then sign Leonard in offseason.
I mean thats what I would try for.

I agree , I think they want to end up with AD and one of KD or Kawhi
I think Boston is now 2 fiddle to LAC in getting AD .
KD could solve alot of this by deciding to stay in GS .

I don't think they have a competitive offer for Davis, personally. SGA is a decent prospect, but if I'm NOP, I need a better centerpiece than that. You don't settle for a package built around SGA when guys like Tatum and potentially Zion are on the table.
Agree that they're in good shape for free agency, though.
-
I'm surprised. I did not expect a team fighting for a playoff spot to trade their best player for picks. It's a good haul for them, though.
Now we have to root for the Clips to sign some big free agents this summer so that pick can still be something.
-
I'm going to go against the grain here and say the Clippers will finish out the season strong.
I know he's not everyone's favorite coach here, but Doc Rivers isn't one to tank unless his hand is really forced.
He won COY in '00 when he lead a Magic team everyone thought would be one of the worst in the league to 41-41. The Magic were rebuilding, having lost/trading away vets like Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant, Dominque Wilkins, Ike Austin, etc. Their most depended on players (based on total minutes) were Darrell Armstrong and Bo Outlaw. Doc got them to .500. To realize how remarkable this was, in the 56 years of the award, only 2 other coaches have had an equally bad or worse record and won COY and that was in '67 and '78. So for Doc to win COY going 41-41, you know expectations had to be low.
Now the 2 years in Boston he had losing records ('06 and '07) he was saddled with young players. Doc is at his best when he's coaching vets, and that's what LAC currently still has for most of their rotation: Gallinaro, Bradley, Beverley, Williams, Gortat, Chandler, Muscala, etc.
I don't know if they'll finish in the playoffs, but they'll finish above .500. That's my prediction.

From what I've heard just from podcasts and stuff, they seem to be the front runner for Kawhi Leonard.

Lou Williams Should win 6MOY IMO

The Clippers are a hilariously competent and competitive team. I honestly thought the Harris trade would end them. My mistake.

How great would that be? I’d feel bad for Toronto fans - their organization took a respectable risk and these geographic preference moves suck for the league, but obviously it helps the C’s. The other great thing is to see the Clips beat the Lakers to the great player for once.

Clinched. Somehow they're in the 5th seed and actually a game better than the Celtics.
This NBA is crazy.
