Last line in Gary Washburn's basketball notes today in the Globe had this little tidbit:

Quote
The Clippers signed Ryan Gomes to a three-year contract last week to take the place of former Boston College standout Craig Smith, who is a free agent. Smith could potentially take Shelden Williams’s role off the bench if the Celtics are interested. Smith averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds as a Clippers reserve last season.

While I think it could be nothing more than wild speculation on Washburn's part, I think Craig Smith coming back to an area he loved to be part of a contending team, something he has never been a part of, would be fantastic.

I like his game. He's very efficient and knows how to cover up his deficiencies. Unlike Big Baby, who is almost his exact physical replica, Smith has an excellent and efficient inside game and very little outside game. With the two of them coming off the bench, Boston would have matching green fire hydrants in the paint but they would be a potent combo for a combined $4 million a year.

He would definitely be a better fit to this team and pick up than anyone that played on the summer league and he's a quality human being with a tremendously high BBIQ that has, on some of the worst teams in this league over the last few years been a consistent 20 points per 40 minutes scorer with a PER around 17. That is awesome considering the people he played with.

Probably just speculation on Washburn's part but I would be all for it.

I don't see him accepting a minimum contract offer.

With Ben Wallace off the market, I can live with Kwame for 10-15 minutes a game for the first half of the season.

Maybe, just maybe, KG and Cliff can knock some sense into him once and for all.

Sherrod Blakely says the Celtics are likely out of the running for Kwame Brown. Apparently he can get more money elsewhere.

Jeez him and Baby on the same team? The league has got to come down on this and create a weight limit for teams.

TP to Nick for the post. I like CS as well. According to his ESPN profile, he's rather efficient, too, at nearly 57% FG, nearly 4 rebs in 16 min as well.

We may have 3 somewhat similar players (Luke, Glen and Craig) but hey it's worked out well for us so far.

I don't remember that in particular, all though I do remember Baron Davis hitting a gamewinning shot at the buzzer. Was that the same game?

Smith ain't bad, but BBD is enough for underized big men on our team for me.
the team to beat...
a force to reckon with...
just pick your poison.

No actually it was the one in Boston.  Craig smith scored 11 of 13 points in the 4th quarter, only had 5 boards but it was in 22 mins and most if not all of those were in the 4th quarter.

I remember at the time, during the broadcast Gorman was saying how Smith had been a force off the bench against a number of teams.

I'd love to see him on the C's but I have to think he'd command a bigger role than the one Shelden Williams had for us last year, he might get more money elsewhere than what we could give him.
