Because his job is to help the Jazz, and if he can get some picks from the Lakers and clear a lot of salary next year, that’s good for him (and it won’t help the Lakers nearly enough).

Hell No

Westbrook is not good enough. We have 3 combo guards (Smart, Brogdon, D White) all of whom are better than him.

It wouldn't do much to help LA anyway.

Conley is old. A safe pair of hands not much more and his role as a ball-handler would be much smaller in LA next to LeBron making Conley even less effective than he is in Utah.

Beasley is a nothing player. I do not understand people's fascination with him. An average to below average bench player.

Vanderbilt might be able to help them some. Good rebounder. Not really what LA need though. He can't shoot so he can't provide the floor spacing their offense desperately needs. Not much of a defender. Ultimately, he provides nothing that important either.

LA is still locked in as a mediocre team. A .500 type team post trade. It does very little to help them. Gets them nowhere near a title or even a postseason run. One and done if they are lucky enough to scrape their way into the playoffs to begin with.

Hoping Lebron breaks the record tonight, as I’m tired of hearing about it.

A team that is older with injury concerns swapping out 1 near useless rotation player for 3 rotation players will obviously help them.  Them doing anything in the playoffs is and will continue to be about James and Davis, but getting to the playoffs is the most important thing for them and I do that sort of trade will help them there.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

That trade is a best case scenario, it offers the Lakers excellent depth and roster balance.

Conley, Beasley, and Vanderbilt are a great complement to Lebron and AD. All 3 are low USG, Conley excels in the two man game, Beasley moves well without the ball, Conley and Beasley are above average 3P shooters, and Vanderbilt is an elite perimeter defender with an elite motor.

The move takes Russ out of the equation and pushes Hachimura, Schroeder, and Pat Bev to the bench during crunch time.

Lebron and AD still have to be healthy to make it work, which is not a given, but assuming that they are, they have a good shot at coming out of the West. It’ll be one of the best roster moves Pelinka has done in 5 seasons (although trading the 2 1sts mortgages their future).

Also is that really the best Utah can do? I’m sure there are many teams very interested who would probably give up a first rounder for Vanderbilt alone

Depends what the draft compensation is.  No team is giving an unprotected 1st for Vanderbilt alone — he’d be long gone if they were.

If it’s one first, that’s probably not a great deal, and probably not happening.  The Lakers can also offer 1st round swaps in addition to up to two actual firsts.  The more Ainge ties the Lakers up in their moment of desperation (and they are desperate), the more hindered they are in the future.  Conley, Beasley, and Vanderbilt aren’t going to make that team a sudden legit contender.  If they want to sell out to get into the play-in game, then fine, have at it.

The “draft compensation” is rumored to be two first round picks.

sources said the Jazz have had discussions about a deal in which a combination of rotation players including Conley and Beasley would go to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for 2027 and 2029 first-round picks and Russell Westbrook, who would likely receive a buyout instead of joining the Jazz – via Tim MacMahon @ ESPN
