Per this https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-players-will-get-in-game-video-access-back-in-2021-heres-why-it-could-make-a-big-difference/ prior to last year, MLB players have always been allowed to watch in-game video. Only this year have they started blurring the catchers signs.

In light of this, what exactly did the Red Sox do wrong in 2018 that caused them to lose a draft pick? Can anyone clarify for me?

You're not supposed to convey the signs to the current hitters. It’s to look at movement,  location,  release point, swings, etc.

With that said it is a system begging yo be abused,  so all the self-righteous hand wringing is pretty absurd. In this day and age of marble-sized high definition cameras no sign is safe, especially if it's legally being pumped into the clubhouse.

No way teams aren't finding ways to steal signs, especially at home.

IMO the whole Astros scandal is more ridiculous than deflategate. Which is saying something. Manfred wouldn't have done anything at all except the media predictably freaked out with an avalanche of moral outrage.

What the Red Sox videographer was “convicted” of doing was communicating with players in the dugout about the signs he observed from watching video. It was nothing real-time in terms of communicating with the hitter. Now, I realize those players were able to watch video for themselves. It’s then up to the players to decide if and how to communicate to the hitter when they are on second base. So what’s the issue?
