The author thinks that 5-7 NO squad is "solid"?
After today the Pelicans are 7-6 and have gone 6-4 in their last 10 after starting poorly.
Demarcus Cousins has been an absolute monster, and is quickly proving to the world that he is the best big man in the league (to the tune of 28.7 points, 13.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.7 blocks along with 47% / 34% / 77% shooting).
His only real completion in that is Anthony Davis (27.2 pts, 12.1 reb, 2.8 ast, 1.3 stl, 2.1 blk on 56% / 39% / 79% shooting) and he happens to play for the very same Pelicans team.
They don't have a lot of depth, but if that make the most of what they have got they should make the playoffs this year - and they truly are one big piece away from being a contender.
I also see them as a wildcard type of team, because they have a very rare thing in this league - a truly dominate frontcourt. In a league where every team is centred around perimeter play, the Pelicans have the type of talented front court size that can cause a lot of modern teams a ton of grief. They could give a team like the Warriors a lot of trouble for example - I can't see 6'7" Draymond Green and whatever random garbage big man (Pachulia or perhaps the Shaqtin' a fool legend himself) they plug in at centre having any hope of stopping the Davis/Cousins duo - and Holiday is the kind of two-way player who could potentially at least slow down Steph Curry while also putting some points up himself. They also have Tony Allen who they can throw on to Klay Thompson to try and slow him down.
Seriously, if the Pelicans found a way to add a talented wing scorer, they'd be deadly.
