Really excellent win in an entertaining game for the Sox tonight.  Lester outdueling a 19-1 Scherzer.  The Sox have shown all year long that they are capable of stepping up to challenges.

Yup, saw the game. Who would've thought Middlebrooks (the number 9 hitter) would be the hero tonight.

And how about Uehara mowing down the Tigers on a handful of pitches in the 9th inning??

Bucholtz, Lester, Lackey, Peavey, Dubront
Then the sixth starter Dempster with a 3.79 era

Sox magic number to clinch the division is 6.

What do you think about their chances in the playoffs?

I think the only real threat to the Sox is Detroit.

I think they can take Oakland, Texas and/or Tampa Bay.

Right now the Sox sorta remind me of the 07-08 Celtics.

Everything is clicking and it's like they have the Midas touch.

I just hope they continue to peak and not drown in the playoffs.

Sox will win the pennant.  Their pitching is just too good. Bucholtz coming back well puts them over the top..   They have clutch players like Pedroia, Ortiz, Victorino, Salty.  I have a lot of respect for Farrell. Get ready!

Surprised I'm the first one to mention this.

Congratulations to the Red Sox! American League East Division Champions!

Still more work to be done!

Yes congrats!

Here is a question would you take this team or the 2004 team in a 7 game series?

I'll let you know in about six weeks.

Seriously though I think they're pretty close. This current team seems deeper perhaps, but has nothing like the Manny/Papi one-two punch. Those guys were completely terrorizing opposing pitchers all year, and somehow became even more dangerous in the playoffs.

Sure did stink tonight. Of all possible outcomes when Buchholz faced Longoria, the one thing Buch absolutely could not allow was the thing he in fact surrendered—a three-run homer. Then the Rays nickel-and-dimed their way to the lead, then the Sox somewhat miraculously tied it, only to have Uehara (!) pick the worst time of the season to blow a save. Grrr.

The Sox just never were potent enough against really good pitching this year.  Tigers have shut them down.
