Title: 500 Greatest Movies of All Time
Post by: celticmaestro on September 29, 2008, 06:16:58 AM
In my opinion, Empire is the best movie magazine/website around. Its reviews are more often than not spot on and they're so well written.

Anyway, they've compiled a list of the best 500 movies ever made and it got me thinking. Surprised to see the omission of certain films, although I can't argue with #1.

I've added a poll of the top 10 on this list, but which films do you think I've missed off the poll, and that Empire has missed off the list.

Ridiculous list...Magnolia on 89, Ferris Bueller on 88?? I mean, I like Ferris as much as the next guy, but cīmon....Fight Club in the top ten?? If the people who voted there are the creme of the crop in Hollywood, it is no wonder that movies became so forgettable. I remember a list of the "Rolling Stone Magazine" about the "500 best songs since you were born", and that was also a horrible collection...these lists are always useless.

I like

Big Fish (great ending)
Citizen Kane
City of God
Hurlyburly
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962 with Marlon Brando)
There will be Blood

Those are probably my favorite 6 movies, in alphabetical order. With more time to think about it, the list would probably change...

Godfather II is the best movie ever made. You shouldn't even consider them tow movies, they were both based off of the same book. Ideally you'd watch Godfather I and Godfather II in succession and burn Godfather 3. Then salt its ashes.

Reading that list just annoys me. "OldBoy"(#64) above "The Great Escape" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre", while "Crouching Tiger" is number like 499? disgusting.

EDIT: And Lawrence of Arabia is number 57 behind Casino Royal? What, were Catwoman and Electra both busy? Awful.

The issue here is distinguishing between best ever made and favorite.  I think that The Godfather is the best ever made, bu the Shawshank Redemption is my favorite on that list.  It's a tough distinction, but in the end I think it gets too clouded by personal feelings.

Plus, if you want to find a list you can really get mad about, check out Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs list.

Any list that doesn't have a single Bertolucci, Bergman or Almodovar film in the top 100 isn't worth the pixels it's written on.  Bertolucci's "The Conformist" and Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" are certainly in my top ten, and Almodovar's "La Mala Education" is certainly in my top 100.

10,000 readers submitted votes, which were apparently given some weight.  That's why that list is pretty ridiculous, I have to say.  For instance, I love Star Wars, but how is Return of the Jedi #91?  How is "School of Rock" ahead of "It's a Wonderful Life"?  Just plain silliness.

Simply a ridiculous list.

Fight Club shouldn't be in the top 100 never mind the top 10. It's a good movie but it's ranking alone removes any credibility from this endeavor.

Blade Runner is only one spot worse than quite possibly, the film regarded by many, many critics as the best film ever made The Godfather Part II? Puhleease!!!

That Gone With the Wind didn't make the top 30 films and  Aliens did is embarrassing and a joke.

Evil Dead 2 is a top 50 movie of all time and yet I'm still scanning down trying to find what is easily one of the 10 greatest films of all time in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I'm almost speechless.

So I've made it threw the top 100 and still haven't found The Wizard of Oz, The Ten Commandments, Patton, Blazing Saddles, Titanic, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Crash, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Platoon, Planet of the Apes, or even one original, old-time monster movie like King Kong, Godzilla, Dracula, or Frankenstein.

And Brickowski is right, where is The Conformist, simply one of the greatest films ever made?

Roy's right, it was a fans voting, not Empire's official 500, should have mentioned that.

It is controversial though, some good discussion going on, although mainly venting. And rightly so. Other than The Godfather, I disagree with the whole top 5. and probably the whole top 10. No Return of the King?

It seems like a list where they wanted to try to combine the "great" movies with some more modern/influential/popular movies, in part to appease the common reader but also so they don't come off as elitists or film snobs.

Unfortunately, if you are going for a "greatest" list you need to be a little bit of a film snob, I guess.  If you want an example of what the general public is into look go to Rotten Tomatoes and look at the crap that is under the Top DVD Rentals for the week.

Fight Club is the prime example I think...good movie? Yeah. Top 10 EVER?  I don't think so...

But Apocalypse now was in the Top 10 so I am happy!

Meh... I find these lists quite useless. However, I'm joining the crowd here: I love the movie brat generation - Spielberg, Coppola, Lucas et al., but this list is utterly annoying. A list that doesn't include a single Ford, Welles, Kurosawa, Bergman and Hitchcock in the top-10 does not deserve further reading. And this is not intellectualism or elitism, I find Godard pathetic and Von Trier is coming close.

If I was doing a top of the lists which list the best movies ever, this one would be a lock to be disregarded.

All those 10 are good movies. Fight Club, Shawshank and Singin' in the Rain` are not great though. I voted for Apocalypse Now but could have picked The Godfather. Those 2 would probably make my top 10, at least in some days.

It's a list of my favorite top ten movies, not the top ten greatest. The top 5 is pretty fluid, depends on my mood and which ones I've seen recently.

1. Chasing Amy
2. The Lord of the Rings : Two Towers
3: Shakespeare in Love
4: Searching for Bobby Fischer
5: Empire Strikes Back
6: The Usual Suspects
7: Henry V (Kenneth Brannaugh's rendition)
8: American History X
9: Much Ado About Nothing ( Again, Brannaugh's version)
10: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

I'm a sucker for a good script.

Those are all in my top ten, although with regards to the two towers I classify the whole trilogy as one (#2 on my list, behind the Godfather I & II - also classified as one).

Been meaning to see Chasing Amy.

This is kind of Clinton-esque but they need to define "greatest" for a list like this.

Does it mean best cinematically crafted?  Most influential?  Most popular?

Because it doesn't seem to fit any of those criteria.  I think that is the problem, it's just 500 good movies in a rough order.

You would need to get a panel of cinema critics (not actors, directors, fans and dear god not executives) to decide something like this, and they would need to be established, intelligent critics.  Probably not the ones you'd ever see quoted in a trailer, for example.

My #1 of all time would have to be The Usual Suspects.  The Godfather films bore me, they are paced too slowly.  I consider myself a real cinema snob and I have never understood the near universal acceptance of the Godfather II as the "greatest" movie of all time.

"The Seventh Seal" is a masterpiece. I love that film every time I see it. Very appropriate for the current times, as well. Although my favorite Bergman is "Wild Strawberries", if there's a great film about the search for meaning in a age of moral uncertainty it's "The Seventh Seal". And Max Von Sydow is brilliant, as always.

You should have questioned his other choices. The Conformist (a great book) is, like most Bertolucci films, boring and presumptuous as hell. Almodovar has directed some great films - Habla con ella, Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, for example -, and some terrible ones. "Mala Educacion" falls in the later category, I'm afraid.

My #1 of all time would have to be The Usual Suspects.  The Godfather films bore me, they are paced too slowly.  I consider myself a real cinema snob and I have never understood the near universal acceptance of the Godfather II as the "greatest" movie of all time.

Hmm.. I've never noticed that universal acceptance.

Here's my top-10 (restricted to a single movie per director to make it fair):

1. The Searchers
2. Citizen Kane
3. The Leopard
4. Raging Bull
5. Yojimbo
6. Wild Strawberries
7. Sunrise
8. 2001: Space Odyssey
9. It's a Wonderful Life
10.Vertigo

Films like "La Strada", "On the Waterfront", "Unforgiven", "E.T.",  or "The Bicycle Thief" can easily make the list the next time I re-do it. Not to talk about "Stagecoach" or "The Man who Shot Liberty Valance", who got the boot because of the restriction.

My top 10 would have to include a film directed by Christopher Nolan:

The Dark Knight (2008)
The Prestige (2006)
Batman Begins (2005)
Insomnia (2002)
Memento (2000)

Great director. Probably a toss up between Memento and The Dark Knight, maybe even The Prestige to go into my top 10.

Well, I guess thatīs a question of taste. I couldnīt sit through it, and fell asleep halfway through.
Maybe Iīm too young, and the paradox` presented in "The Seventh Seal" are simply not a part of my life, yet.  ;)

At least, we can agree that Max von Sydow is a great actor.

My #1 of all time would have to be The Usual Suspects.  The Godfather films bore me, they are paced too slowly.  I consider myself a real cinema snob and I have never understood the near universal acceptance of the Godfather II as the "greatest" movie of all time.

I know what you mean, I`ve experienced this nearly universal acceptance as well. I liked the first one, although I wouldnīt put it in my top 10...or top 50, for that matter. And itīs definitly because of the pace, as you said. But I found the second one to be incredibly boring. Just because a movie has DeNiro and Pacino in it doesnīt make it great.

The Usual Suspects is another movie I did not like. The Twist in the end was forseeable, imo, the story didnīt catch me, neither did the overall mood of the movie. Itīs funny that you mentioned this movie, because Godfather II and "The Usual Suspects" go head-to-head for first place of my personal "overrated"-list.

Top 10 Movies I love, but snubbed out of my top 10.

1. Tootsie
2. South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut
3. Casablanca
4. Bringing Up Baby
5. Beauty and the Beast (I said it)
6. Jaws
7. Collateral
8. Clerks II
9. The American President
10. X-2: X-Men United.

I definitely think The Usual Suspects is a little too popular for it's own good.  But, fully knowing the ending (which I admit I did NOT foresee when I first viewed the film) I still enjoy the acting and crafting of the movie.

It's definitely not a clear-cut #1 for me, but it's definitely in my top 10.

Well, my top 10 would be

1. Citizen Kane
2. Gone with the Wind
3. The Conformist
4. The Seventh Seal
5. The Seven Samurai
6. The African Queen
7. Sophie's Choice
8. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (better than Episode I)
9. Lawrence of Arabia
10. Annie Hall

Some movies that made the top 500 list but should be ranked much, much higher are:

The Big Red One (thematically, a better war movie than Saving Private Ryan. Samuel Fuller's best film)
To Have and Have Not (the best Bogie and Bacall)
The English Patient (great performances all around)
Rashomon (Kurosawa classic that has to be in the top 25)
The Maltese Falcon (has to be in the top 25.  Maybe John Huston's best film)
Paths of Glory (Kubrick masterpice. Top 25. Beresford's Breaker Morant was essentially a remake)
Bridge on the River Kwai (top 25)
Fitzcarraldo (personal fave. top 25)
The Wild Bunch (Most influential western ever made, and perhaps the best. Top 15)
Forrest Gump (Top 25)

Great movies that did not make the list (stupidly)

High Sierra (Bogie and the immensely talented Ida Lupino)
Body Heat (The film that launched both William Hurt and kathleen Turner.)
Only Angels Have Wings (one of Howard Hawks' best.  How could they leave this one off but include Rio Bravo?)
Lady From Shanghai (One of Welles' best.  Better than Touch of Evil. Last chase scene in the house of mirrors is a classic.  Filmmaker's film)
Minnie and Moskowitz (Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes at their best)
The Big Chill (Are You kidding?  I went through the list twice thinking I had missed it)
Bullworth (Ranks right after Network as great political satire)
Nashville (one of Robert Altman's best)
M.A.S.H. (Another one where I had to doublecheck.  How could it be left off? Did they have it in for Altman?)
Flight of the Phoenix (the original, with James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, et. al.  The remake was trash)
Betrayal (Pinter screenplay, fabulous performances by Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley. Glaring omission)
Breaker Morant (Beresford.  Superb cinematography)
The Dirty Dozen (Personal fave)
High Noon (You've got to be kidding me! Stanley Kramer's best film, great performances by Gary Cooper and others)
Wuthering Heights (the original with Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon)
King Lear (Paul Schofield's rendition.  Best Shakespeare ever fimed, although Richard Burton's Hamlet also deserves consideration)

(I won't even get into the omission of silent classics like Birth of a Nation or Nosferatu.)

Really BAD movies that made the top 500 list

V for Vendetta
300
Sin City
Rio Bravo (probably Howard Hawks' worst film.)
Night of the Living Dead
First Blood
The Leopard (slow moving and totally overrated)
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (No, Russ Meyer is not a good filmmaker)

LOL, Yes, I meant the "first" Star Wars

And here are three more glaring omissions from the top "500":

Night and Fog (the most powerful documentary ever made)
Grand Illision
Belle de Jour

French films are genrally underrepresented on the list.

I like Burton's Hamlet better than Olivier's-- and Brannaugh's Hamlet too.  I liked Olivier's Henry V just as much as Brannaugh's.  I liked Olivier's Othello.  But Schofield's Lear tops them all IMHO.

Two other glaring omissions:

1. The Killing Fields

2. How could the list include Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis version)-- not a terrible film, but certainly a mediocre one--and omit Beresford's The Black Robe or Northwest Passage (with Spencer Tracy), both of which are vastly superior pieces of fimmaking covering the same general theme?

Almost Famous was definitely on the list somewhere. As for Knocked Up, I was very disappointed when I watched that. Superbad wiped the floor with it.
