Game Notes

The Celtics come to the end of their 4 game road trip.  They are 3-0 so far on the trip and are looking for a sweep of the trip with a win against the Utah Jazz.  This is the toughest game on the trip as the Jazz have been playing very well and are a very good defensive team.  They also are very motivated by several factors.

First, the Jazz are still smarting from the loss of Gordon Hayward. He won't be playing in this game but the Jazz will be playing to beat his new team and also to show him he turned his back on the better team.  You might say that they have gotten over it,  but this was tweeted by the Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday.
Quote
Dear @gordonhayward: The @utahjazz are doing just fine without you. @rudygobert27 is a stud and @spidadmitchell is going to be a star, probably bigger than you. You're not missed. Sincerely, @GordonMonson.

The Jazz are also fighting for their playoff lives and positioning.  They are currently 7th in the West.  They are 1.5 games behind the Spurs for 6th  place and just half a game ahead of Minnesota for the 8th place.  They are also just 2 games ahead of 9th place and slipping out of the playoffs altogether and so every win matters to them.

At the trade deadline, Jae Crowder was traded to the Jazz by the Cavaliers for Rodney Hood.  Like Isaiah, Jae did not fit in with the Cavaliers.   He is fitting in with the Jazz much better and is playing pretty well.   It's ironic that he ended up on the Jazz because he was very upset last season when the Celtics fans cheered for Gordon Hayward because he felt disrespected.  Now, Hayward is a Celtic and Jae is on Gordon's former team.  The Jazz will want to win this one for Jae and also for Jonas Jerebko who joined the Jazz in the offseason.

The Celtics have won 4 straight and 3 on the road trip.  They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and 27-10 on the road.  They are 21-8 against Western Conference teams.  They are 3.5 games behind the Raptors, who won on Tuesday, and 7 games ahead of the Cavaliers, who lost on Tuesday.   The Jazz are 8-2 in their last 10 games and are 24-12 at home.  They are 14-15 vs the East.

Marcus Morris is questionable for this game after spraining his ankle in the game against the Suns.  Kyrie Irving (knee), Daniel Theis (knee), Gordon Hayward (ankle), and Marcus Smart (thumb) are all still out.  The Celtics signed Xavier Silas, who last played on Scal's team in the Big 3 League, and he is expected to join the team for this game.  For the Jazz, Raul Neto (wrist) and Thabo Sefolosha (knee) are both out.

Key Matchups

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Brown_Jaylen_bos1617.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Mitchell_Donovan_uta17.jpg)
Jaylen Brown vs Donovan Mitchell
Donovan Mitchell has been a very impressive rookie for the Jazz.  He is the only rookie with three 30+ point games (41, 31, and 32).  He is leads all rookies with 20.3 points per game along with 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists.  In the earlier game vs the Celtics, Mitchell finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists, hitting two back-to-back three pointers late in the game to seal the game for Utah.  Brown's size and defense will hopefully slow him down somewhat.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Baynes_Aron_bos17.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Gobert_Rudy_uta17.jpg)
Aron Baynes vs Rudy Gobert
The 7'1" Gobert has a height advantage over Baynes but Baynes should have a strength advantage that he can hopefully use to keep him away from the basket somewhat.  Gobert is averaging 14.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.  The Celtics need to try to keep him out of the paint.

Honorable Mention

Terry Rozier vs Ricky Rubio
Rubio is averaging 12.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists.  In the first game, which the Jazz won, Rubio led the Jazz with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Terry will need to come up big for the Celtics on both ends of the court for the Celtics to win this one.

Keys to the Game
Rebound - Much of rebounding is effort and when the Celtics put out that effort on the boards, we see it in the other areas of their game.  The Celtics are averaging  44.4 rebounds per game (8th) while the Jazz are averaging 43.0  rebounds per game (20th).   The Celtics  were out rebounded 55-31 in the first game between these two teams.  If they want to win this one,  they have to do better on the boards.

Defense -  Defense is the key to winning each and every game.  The Celtics must play the swarming team defense that we saw from them to begin the season.  The Celtics are still the team with the best defensive rating (101.2).   The Jazz are also a good defensive team with a defensive rating of 102.0, good for 2nd in the league.   Defense wins games and the Celtics must play tough swarming TEAM defense.  The Celtics must particularly guard the 3 point line as the Jazz shot 52% from beyond the arc in their December win against the Celtics.

Take Care of the Ball - The Celtics have to take care of the ball, make smart passes, and limit their turnovers.   The Jazz are 13th in the league, averaging 16.6 points off of turnovers  and the Celtics don't want to give them extra points by getting careless with the ball.  The Jazz are also 3rd with 8.7 steals a game.  It will be important for the Celtics to keep their focus and not turn the ball over and not be careless with the ball.

Play 48 Minutes
-  The Celtics can't afford to dig a hole at the beginning of the game and they can't let up at the end and lose focus and miss shots and allow the Jazz to score at will.  They also can't afford those periods in the game where they turn the ball over and lose their focus.  They have to play hard from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

X-Factors
End of the Road - The Celtics are playing in the final game of a 4 game Western road trip.  They have won the first 3 games and so it would be easy to let up and say 3-1 on the trip is pretty good.  The last game in a road trip is always a tough one as the team is road weary and tired and may struggle to keep their focus.  They have to stay focused on playing Celtics basketball and block out all the distractions that come from playing on the road.

Motivation -  I'm sure the Jazz have had this game circled ever since Gordon Hayward signed with the Celtics this summer.   Hayward's former teammates, especially Gobert, were upset that he left the Jazz and will likely be extra motivated to beat the team he signed with.  Jae and Jonas will be motivated to beat their former team.  The Jazz will also have the home crowd to help motivate them.  The Celtics have to dig deep for enough Celtics Pride to help them avenge their earlier loss to the Jazz.

Injuries - The Celtics are still very short handed while the Jazz is pretty much healthy and they are starting the same lineup they did in Boston.  So far on the road trip, the Celtics have been able to overcome the absence of 4 (and in 2 games 5) of their key players.  However they are at the end of the trip and the injuries may just catch up to them.  [/center}

Too bad Hayward won't be playing in this game. It would've been an interesting one indeed.

Let's go Celtics!

Starting five??!!

I heard that Favors is coming off the bench now.

Mitchell should be ROY, not Simmons.

4 or 4 road trip would be amazing with depleted Celtics squad.

Don't think we can win without Morris offense,  no matter how well Tatum and Rozier play.   Have to have that third scorer.

We have to win this. Jazz fans are really really annoying.

-calling Mitchell a "bonafide superstar", not future, not even up-and-coming, BONAFIDE.
-their blog frontpage said Stevens tampered with Hayward.
-apparently Crowder and Jerebko are gonna destroy us.

Hard to believe there's only 8 games left! Gonna be tough. While I really like Spyder Mitchell, I still say Tatum has been the best rookie this season. Mitchell has been given the green light from day 1. He was told primarily that he was going to take over Gordon's role as go to scorer and he hasn't disappointed. I'm not a huge stat guy but I do know shots made and shots taken and this kid is hoisting them up at a blistering rate! If Jason shot as much as he does he'd probably be in the top 5 in scoring! His athleticism is off the charts. Reminds me a lot of Brandon Roy before the injuries.

With that said, I love our backups playing like they truly believe that they can compete against any team in this league. Win or lose, just compete and anything can happen!

Tonight has to be:

He and Gobert are French lending an international aura to the event.

Vegas over under on Yabu points is 3.5...any takers?

Utah have been one of the three best teams in the NBA since Gobert came back, so there's a fairly good chance this game isn't pretty considering the injuries.

Still, the Celtics have shown that they play hard every night regardless of the talent on the floor. So I'm hoping we get another close game down the stretch like we saw against Indiana, Washington, OKC and Portland.

Could get ugly tonight against a Utah team that's been playing pretty well, but I'll keep hoping for the best!

Yabu's career high is 6—I'm gonna say he sets a new high tonight with 11. I also think Shark goes off for 15, and Tatum and Brown hit 20 apiece.

I wouldn't mind seeing the C's just rest most of their starters, including Morris and Rozier all next week.

We're locked into the 2 seed pretty much, and really can't afford any more injuries w/Kyrie and Smart already missing the 1st round.

Likewise, we also get to see the rookies and young guys show us what they've got in the meantime. (Even if it means getting blown out in games)

He's at 5 already, and has been aggressive as of late. Hope it continues tonight!

Ugh, Nader with a dumb, selfish decision on the fastbreak.

And that was clearly a foul on Tatum on the last play. The defender didn't let him land and knocked him over. That's like an automatic foul anymore.

Love that three that Tatum just took. He's a good enough shooter that I'd like to see him take those more often off of the screens like that.

Nice plays by Tatum.  We're fortunate to be tied right now.  Our transition defense in the 1st was pretty bad but overall we're playing good D considering how shorthanded we are.

Utah's starting lineup shows just how inexact a science the NBA draft is.  Gobert at #27 is a better player than #3 Favors.  Mitchell at #13 is miles better than #5 Exum.  Also Ingles undrafted, and both Crowder and Jerebko are 2nd round picks with solid NBA careers.

Am I losing it, or wasn't that Tatum who just made that last difficult layup? All of the boxscores that I'm looking at have it as Larkin, but I could've swore it was Tatum for his 9th and 10th points.

geez, quite the game. really grinding defense by both teams. i am impressed.

the celtics need to make the outside shots to have any chance, and so far so good.

this will be a brutal second half. utah plays really physical defense. will the celtics scorers have enough to score in the fourth quarter i wonder.

but keeping utah to 39 points in a half is spectacular defense.

Boston with a solid defensive effort in that 2nd quarter with only 15 points given up. They also were able to force 10 turnovers and knock down some impressive 3s. Really nice to see the effort especially after Utah made that run to take the lead in the first.

If we win another game with this rag-tag bunch, Stevens will have to gain even more momentum for COTY. Even if we lose, it's still very impressive. Let's keep this up guys!

Yeah, that's the thing about current NBA officiating - there's just simply no consistency. We've dang near already matched the foul count in the first half in four minutes of the second half. Just a different standard of officiating being called both ways.

Yeah, that's the thing with Rozier - if he's not getting his own offense, he's pretty much a hindrance out there. At least Larkin plays more of a "true PG" game by initiating the offensive sets and getting others involved.

Not that the Cs had much of a chance tonight, but this is a script on how not to hold a lead. They come out of half-time fouling like crazy, including putting their struggling star on the line twice. They then proceed to leave their star wide open for two 3s in a row. While over the limit, they continue to stupidly foul. All the while the whole team starts to feel great, leading to all-out momentum for the home team.

It's just disappointing to see not only lack of execution, but such a lack of focus on the defensive end. I guess it wouldn't really matter if we were actually scoring, but that isn't happening at all either.

Ugh. It's official - Monroe is a below average finisher.

He should have just went for the two handed dunk on that one.....get fouled at least

He's automatic in one direction or the other.  Either finishes everything or misses everything.

I've never seen a player who gets so many shots around the rim be so streaky.

So after calling 10 fouls in the entire first half, these refs just called 15 fouls in the third quarter alone.  ::)

Have some respect for your craft, refs.

Decent little run to get back in the game to close the third.  We have a chance to win this game, but we're going to have to find some good offense somewhere.  Yes, Utah is a great defensive team.  But we're making their job easy with some sloppy ball.

I was a little worried I might have to stay up until midnight tonight. I guess that is not the case. Good night, folks - that sure deteriorated quickly.  :(

Aw man, cmon, gotta stick around...
what is the most unlikely thing to happen, it will probably happen

Haha - TP  :P I stuck around - at least I got to see AAC Offensive Player of the year, Semi Ojeleye, take over the game. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it!

good man!  tp back at ya

Okay, okay - so you were totally right.

What a great shot by Brown (and set-up by Ojeleye/Larkin). I can't believe what Stevens is doing with this group. What a great job to re-focus and get the W. Wow!!  ;D

Worth pointing out that Yab, Baynes, Larkin, Ojeleye and Nader have played 115 minutes between them. That's 23 minutes per player.

And we won on the road against a solid Western Conference playoff team.

Yeah him and the rest of the bench (31 points) really played well overall.  These guys are basically our 3rd string (GH, Smart, Horford, Morris, Thies all out) and they are stepping up with the effort.

With Larkin it just cracks me up that Doc for years couldn't find a backup PG for Rondo. No one they brought in it seemed was effective.  Larkin sits for games at a time, but when Brad uses him it seems like always impacts a game in some way.  And this is the 3rd string guy.

That last play design was beautiful.  By putting Ojeleye on the court at the 5 and attacking the basket with Larkin, Stevens targeted Gobert and forced him to be wrong.  Either he lets Larkin get to the rim, or he leaves Ojeleye wide open for three.

And props to Semi for the extra pass.  Instead of a good look by a below average shooter, we got a terrific look for a very good shooter.  The Jazz’ closeout to Brown is scheduled to arrive sometime in the year 2027.

Brilliant play, well executed by all involved.

Ojeleye went ham!

Nice game from him, shot well but more importantly he didnt just stand around, he made plays, cut, rebounded.

Nader played well as well.

Larking was really great today, set teammates up, fought through screens and defended well. Hope Rozier follows that.

Injuries or no injuries, I don't see it. Even taking Hayward out of the equation, this was a 53-win team that got better over the offseason -- and is on pace to improve by a couple of wins. We're pretty much just in line with expectations here.

Lol, seriously?

Retained 4 players, starting a rookie and a sophomore, lost our star wing 5 minutes into the season, Morris and Smart have both missed considerable amounts of time. These all have significantly dampened expectations.

He’s also made Shane Larkin look like an elite third string backup, and has been able to utilise quite weak talent (at this stage, in Semi, Nader and Yabu) look decent.

This season has definitely not been “in line with expectations” if you’ve been paying attention to what’s happened this season

I haven't seen a lot of games over the past month but that's the best I've seen Nader look all season.

I thought it was very encouraging to see Rozier and Monroe come through in crunch time after dismal offensive games to that point. Shows that the players can maintain confidence through struggle..

Brad is just taking his coach of the year victory lap with what he’s been doing with our injured roster to close the season
Injuries or no injuries, I don't see it. Even taking Hayward out of the equation, this was a 53-win team that got better over the offseason -- and is on pace to improve by a couple of wins. We're pretty much just in line with expectations here.

Go back and read the threads day after Hayward went down. This is 20-20 hindsight gibberish.

Why do I need to care about other people not having a solid grasp of reality? It's not like it's a rare occurrence around here.

Of course, you are a classic example of not having grasp of reality, so of course you wont care.

You have been a Stevens hater for a long time, even spouting nonsense like he cannot adjust in-game, and you won't even listen to all the contrary evidence.
