How about the idea of making Horford our player-coach in 2021-2022? Then get him to restructure his final year such that we have room for a max free agent in 2022 or 2023.

Incidentally, players are not allowed to become player-coaches. This is because it would be possible to circumvent the cap by signing a player as a player-coach, and paying him less as a player but overpaying him as a coach. The only payment a team can make to a player is for rendering services as a basketball player.

Wonder if there’s an exception if there’s no change to an existing contract inherited via trade? There’s clearly no cap manipulation in this scenario. Even if that was possible, Al could only be player-coach this year and next at most.

It seems silly to prohibit the possibility of a future Bill Russell player-coach.

No, there is no exception.

When was the last player-coach?
LeBron James.

Yeah. Yeah. Ty Lue.

Yes, technically, Ty Lue got paid to be the head coach of those Cavs teams, but, come on!!! We all know who really coached those teams.

When was the last player-coach?

Apparently, Dave Cowens.

Lenny Wilkins is probably the most famous one after Bill Russell.

The only restructuring that NBA contracts have is using cap space to increase the salary and cap hit. You can't use it to reduce a player's salary and cap hit.
I'm bitter.

I think we don't know and that in itself makes it too big a risk to contemplate.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

Dave Debusshere was player coach for Pistons. I think he was 24 at the time.

Exactly. Trying to revive something that hasn't happened in 40+ years is a silly suggestion, especially for a player who has yet to show interest in coaching
