It s because people take into account the requirements of the modern NBA and you compare him to Mark Eaton and Bryant Reeves.
Not very familiar with Bryant Reeves, but Mark Eaton was a pretty amazing defender (he buoyed an elite Jazz defense that fell off to average without him). If Tacko Fall becomes a guy like Eaton he'd be a pretty valuable piece (eg. a backup center who could be immensely useful in some matchups), even in the modern NBA.

But, in a game with a ton pick n roll basketball aimed at creating space and looking for the best wide open shot, many of which are threes, in a game that doesn't allow big men to just sit under the basket waiting for teams to take the ball at him, in a game that would require Eaton to move quickly all around the inside of the 3 point arc while needing to guard bigs on the perimeter, in a game that loves to switch and create mismatches, Eaton would find it difficult to cut out a role in today's NBA.

This puts in a nutshell what coaches are dealing with today. It isn’t “small ball” but speed ball. Size is as always an advantage, but the biggest priority is covering ground on defense.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Mark Eaton would have huge problems staying on the court in 2020. The guy could do little else but guard big men near the basket and seat away shots from dopes that drove it towards him.

You see, the entire point of the game in those days was predicated on getting as close to the basket to shoot as possible, so the nature of the game drove everything inside at him, so his defense was great.

Nick normally I agree with you...and this time I still do. I still think Tacko is worth a shot, the investment would be very minimal anyway. But the likeliness of him being an NBA player is low.

I'm not saying he isn't worth a shot. I actually pointed out earlier that there is very little needed to invest in him except time and a roster spot, so why not invest in him.

I just think people should temper expectations is all. There are people here who expect he should be made NBA starter ready by Stevens in just one training camp. Others suggesting, he should be getting minutes immediately. Others saying he is a 75% shooter, when he is more like a guy that gets to drop it in the basket 4 times in the 6 times he was allowed to touch the ball a game in college!!!(He isn't a 75% shooter. He is a good garbage man. Big difference between those things!!!)

He may not shoot many attempts. Maybe he should shoot more at that rate, but let's call a spade a spade.

He actually does shoot %74 from the field over his career and maintained that in SL.

He's going straight to the HOF. Just have to pray Stevens unleashes the Great Wall of Fall.

Again, he doesn't shoot it at 75%. He dunks it at 75%. Of his 206 shots last year, 3 were outside of 3 ft. THREE!! He dunked almost all of the stuff he scored on.

His actual shooting(not dunking) is so bad, Tacko had a TS% about 10% lower than his actual FG% because he was a 36% FT shooter.

He has little to no "shooting" ability. Just the ability to drop the ball in the basket. There is a massive difference. Someone who is a 75% shooter is someone you build an offense around. Someone with little offensive talent other than dunking that has a FG% of 75%, is not someone you build an offense around.

Ha. A shot is a shot. If it's a dunk or a put up  near the basket or beyond the 3P line,  it's a shot.

Tacko is so tall, you get him the ball near the basket, it's 2 points. Most can't reach up high enough to stop the shot.

He shot 75% in college, and also in the summer league. The rest maybe Ainge figures they can teach him. He's a rocket scientist.

Wonder what Shaq thinks.

Well, he is very bright and knows his limitations and his strengths.   He is trying to be a three point bomber because he knows where his bread is buttered.

Or.....

Because he isn't able to do anything offensively other than dunk and lay the ball in, the coaches made him an offensive garbage man who only was allowed to shoot within 3 feet of the basket.

Celtics brass needs to make a business decision.  Do they make the risky move to put Tacko in the G league, to fill the seats of their recently purchased G-League affiliate?  Or do they bring him to Beantown?  Do they do a little of each?  How do they maximize their return on investment for both his talent and charisma?

Red Auerbach's  expression in basketball still holds true  - "you can't teach height."

During Summer League, how successful were opponents at stopping Tacko from scoring when he got the ball close to the basket? If you were 6'9" or less the odds were pretty much 0%. If one were taller the odds go up, but not by much.

What's distinguishes Tacko from other big men is they often get their shots blocked if they try to score within 3 feet.
Tacko can either wait out his opponent's block attempt or simply go straight to the hoop. Defenders most often can't react quickly enough to block his dunks.

Read a statistic years ago that showed, big men shooting in close to the basket, get their shots blocked far more frequently than other shooters.

Tacko's ability to score in close defies those statistics.

Add to that, not only is it difficult stopping him from scoring, it's also hard to stop him from getting the ball. Moving three hundreds pounds isn't easy even if he can't bench press as much as some people in this group feel he should.

Ya, he reminds me of Wilt Chamberlain.

Yes he does shoot it at 74 percent. It doesn't matter if it's a dunk, a layup, or a skyhook.

He shoots it at 74 percent end of story.

Nobody is saying build an offense around the guy, but you can't stop him once he gets deep enough.

This talk of Tacko Fall's FT% reminds me of Ben Wallace.  Wallace shot nearly 50% for his career but he was a historically bad shooter.  His career FT% was 41%.

This is why Tacko's 75% FG% doesn't mean much other than he demonstrates good shot selection.  Fall's college FT% was 43%.

If Tacko Fall does make it in the NBA, it is not going to be about his FG% any more than it was for Ben Wallace.

It's fine to point out his weaknesses. Let's can a spade a spade though. When he does decide to shoot, it's going in almost three quarters of the time.
