Okay, so I know he isn't the most popular player to grace the parquet, and his recent comments suggest that he was part of the problem last year, but I saw this rumor which indicates Terry would be quite willing to return should Kyrie sign elsewhere:
The 25-year-old guard, who's set to be a restricted free agent, is "more than open" to returning to the Celtics if Kyrie Irving inks a deal elsewhere, according to a report from NBC Sports Boston, which cites an unidentified league source.
This would seem to make sense. No Kyrie = more minutes for Rozier. It may also run deeper as Terry and Kyrie have very different personalities.
Taking this a step further, if we trade Smart and one of Tatum/Brown for AD, we will certainly have a need for backcourt minutes. While Terry has been polarizing to say the least, he has has performed well as a starter. He is one of the most electric players in the league athletically, rebounds extremely well for his position, can knock down an open 3, and get to the hoop (with inconsistent results). If he can continue to work on his weaknesses, and without the pressure of needing to perform well in a contract year, he may very well settle into his new role successfully.
While he can be frustrating at times, a player like Rozier is not boring and can reach an impressive level when he is playing his best. With somebody like AD on board, we may need to take more chances as winning will be one of the best incentives for him staying. I am not here to say whether or not Rozier is a winning player, but he has a ceiling that MLE level veterans do not have...and we may need to sign one of the, as well.
Also, if he comes in at a reasonable price (at or less than Marcus Smart money), he will be an additional contract we can use in a trade down the road should things not work out...maybe even at the trade deadline.
Look, I am not the president of the Rozier fan club - he can be frustrating, bone-headed, and selfish - but we will be left with few alternatives if our starting backcourt is no longer with us. He may just surprise us all and be the reason AD decides to stay.
