Maine Celtics guard JD Davison has been named the 2024-25 Kia NBA G League Most Valuable Player. He earned the honor in a vote by the league?s 31 head coaches and general managers. He is the 2nd Maine Celtics player to win the award (Tim Frazier, 2014-15).

A two-way player with the Boston Celtics, Davison averaged 25.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 48.2% from the field in 45 overall games for Maine. His strong play led Maine to the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference in the 2025 NBA G League Playoffs presented by Google Pixel and a 21-13 regular season record. He was also named Kia NBA G League Player of the Month for February.

Utah Jazz two-way forward-center Oscar Tshiebwe (Salt Lake City Stars) and Capital City Go-Go guard Jaylen Nowell finished second and third in voting, respectively.

What does it matter if he can't turn those G-League performances into becoming a reliable NBA performer for the Celtics?

It will be interesting to see if the Celts decide to sign him to the 15th roster spot ahead of the playoffs.  He's certainly earned it in Maine, but I don't see him getting anything but garbage time minutes in Boston.

was so hoping he'd be able to carry some of that G-league success to the NBA.  Jrue's not getting any younger.  Unfortunately when he does get minutes with the C's, he still doesn't seem to know how to run an offense--not that Joe runs set plays but still, no display of being able to organize the team on the floor.

Well, whether or not he develops into anything at the NBA level, I think it worth the recognition for the kid.  MVP of the G League is still any honor and certainly noteworthy of news on a Celtics related blog.

Will JD Davison even be kept on next season?

It feels like the window for his Celtics career has closed. He has failed to take the opportunities that were there for him.

What is the purpose of the G-League here:

(1) Is it to have individual success in the G-League?
Or
(2) Is it to develop into a Celtics player?

This is prioritizing the wrong thing. He has failed in his purpose.

We can't keep him as a 2-way.  The only reason to keep him is that his salary is below the typical vet minimum.

Good for JD.  I hope we sign him to a 1+1 deal for the 15th spot.  He?s earned it.  As for his future prospects, if he had stayed in school he would be in his senior season, so while All-Star likely is not in his future, it would also not surprise me to see him crack an NBA rotation at some point in his career.  That might not be with the Celtics, especially with who is in front of him, but he has continued to improve every year since he was drafted, and still presumably has a fair bit of growth left in him.

Jerdarrian Devontae (JD) Davison is 22.  He will be 23 by the start of next season.  He has flashed a lot of potential along the way, but he is running our of real estate to establish himself as an NBA player.  I checked the historical G-League MVP list and  I recognized 2 as NBA players, Paul Reed and Chris Boucher.  So it has happened.

In JD?s favor, going back to the advent of the 2-way contract (which changed the player composition of the G-League), every player except Paul Reed won the award at the age of 25 or older, so Davison at 22 is a bit different than all but Reed who won it at just under 22.
