They also just signed Kristian Campbell to an 8 year/$60M extension. Kind of cool they are getting these extensions done for our most exciting young players. I think they did the same thing with Rafaela last year (8 years/$50M).

The expensive vets on the team are mostly ass, but the future actually does look bright for the Red Sox

If he's any kind of player (which he looks to be), that has the potential to be a huge bargain.  I'm not even sure why he's sign that deal.  Guys are making $20 million who are borderline all star level.

He's quickly become my favorite player on the team. I have been watching Sox games again and he seems to be a big reason why. I know that contract counts years that would otherwise be arbitration years, but that is just a really big bargain for a player who is clearly MLB ready. The Sox also have two club option years for around $20M that could keep in Boston until he is 32.

And we still have Anthony and Mayer on the way.

Something to distract from the market crash.....

The Red Sox have recovered.  Devers has a couple of hits.  But the starting pitching is still not quite there.  Our starters combined ERA is 4.86, 12th best in the AL.  Houck in particular has not been good.  But this may not be a big issue.  We have Bello, Crawford, and Giolito all working back from injury.  If Houck doesn't come around, replace him in the rotation and move him to the bull pen.

Overall, I still have a good feeling about the team.

Great to see the offense getting it in gear. Too bad Buehler's a bust so far.

Crochet definitely wasn't sharp, allowing the leadoff hitter to reach in 3 of 6 innings and walking 4, but the defense and offense let him down. I thought the offense had finally arrived after the good showing against Baltimore and St. Louis, but the mighty Blue Jays have shut them down. And the cold isn't a good excuse, since both teams have to play in it, and it was apparently no issue for Toronto.

Granted both teams were playing on the same weather, but it's tough to get a good gage on a team's performance in these conditions.  There were a lot of hard hit balls that just died.

Devers is such a diva:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45059014/rafael-devers-tells-red-sox-move-first-base

Totally agree. If you're a team player you suck it up do what's best for the team. He sounds like he was annoyed he was made to switch from 3rd to DH and now he's digging his heels in.

That being said, is he really the best choice at 1st? He was a weak link at 3rd. I'm not as clued in on the baseball player market as I am with the NBA but surely we can find someone better?

This season has disillusioned me of Devers.  A player with his salary needs to be a leader.  He demonstrates at every turn that he is not.  Wouldn?t mind seeing him traded tbh.  Though I don?t know what a $300M full-time DH who cries whenever he?s expected to put the team first would have in terms of trade value.

He is a bit whiny, and he's definitely better suited to just DH. They should be able to find a trade for a decent 1B who wouldn't break the bank or require any of Boston's top prospects.

According to Mike Monaco on the NESN Red Sox broadcast John Henry, Craig Breslow and Sam Kennedy all flew to Kansas City to talk to Raffy about his intemperate comments to the media criticizing the front office. Apparently head honcho Henry had a one-on-one with Devers - to dress him down? Ask him what he meant? Tell him to STHU? Who knows.

Quote
Breslow: "There were conversations. John, Sam and I flew out earlier today. It was actually John who spoke directly with Raffy. We felt like it was important based on the situation that unfolded yesterday to come out here and have an honest conversation about what we value as an organization and what we believe is important to the Boston Red Sox. That being great teammates for each other."

I just want to point out, since 2019 John Henry and ownership basically disappeared for the next 4-5 seasons and were fine just letting the Sox rot and be a mediocre baseball team. They weren't spending to the levels needed and didn't care about making any postseason push outside of 2021 which looks like a fluke now (and they let go of a bunch of good players that offseason anyways). Empty trade deadlines and one year of being sellers.

But now all of a sudden they care again? Henry is meeting with Devers 1 on 1?

The issue isn't just Devers, but this organization has basically let the team become unhinged. Even Cora you can tell is just doing as he pleases sometimes and isn't really in the mood to have too many tough conversations. He did with Devers this offseason when they signed Bregman and said he was only to DH, but now Cora is also like "really, I now have to beg Devers to play 1B, why can't you [Breslow] do it"

All parties look terrible in this. Devers, Cora, Breslow, ownership. They do. No one gets a "pass". And Henry, Werner + Kennedy allowed this to unfold because of how they operated this franchise from 2020-2024. If you also want to say the Devers signing was bad, it's also because they let Betts + Bogaerts and others walk and were basically forced to do it. Again, that's on them.

Dunno man. Sure, ownership tanked for a few years to build up our farm system. Mission accomplished. But what does that have to do with Devers's childish insubordination? You'd think he'd be happy being on a relevant team again.

This situation reminds me of Nomar Garciaparra in 2003-2004. A popular player finally gets a good team around him but is a team cancer and is traded for guys who actually care.

IMO we should send Devers to whatever team will take him. He is the opposite of a leader and is setting a terrible example for the young players.
